Not as SHTF as Lucifers Hammer but the same author team did Footfall. Invasion story that involves preppers and others.

Just read this one. I liked it, thanks for the recommendation. Some typo's in the book, but it was a good story, and an entertaining read. Looking forward to the sequels.

Patriots (1) by Rawles is great. Survivors (2) was OK and I don't plan to read Founders (3).

Holding their own by Joe Nobody was decent. It's a light read. Honestly, I don't remember much of it, and may read it again. It is short enough. The sequels got good reviews, and I plan to pick them up.

I was about to look into buying Unintended Consequences, but have you seen the price? ($250!!!)
http://www.amazon.com/Unintended-Con.../dp/1888118040

Anybody know a cheaper option? Or have a copy I can buy off you?

Look for the pdf version of the novel free online. The author has supposedly expressed support in finding one this way and it's worth the read.

Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse

Great if you can get around some of the Christian comments. Pretty easy to do actually.

Almost scary how many parallels there were. I just read this and I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't current events.

Just finished The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
Post SHTF, if you will. Well written-- hard for me to put down.
Takes place in Thailand, if you've ever been there you'll find the writing highly evocative.

'The Passage' and 'The 12'; post collapse brought on by a virus that turns people into near industructible killing machines. One more to come in the trilogy.

The Earth Abides.

Tunnel in the Sky: future survival course on an alien planet that strands high school students who must survive in a hostile environment and from each other. A classic by R.A. Heinlein.

No, he is in Florida and has to walk to get home to his wife and girls. Meets up with a girl and a big dude. Gonna be a 3 part series.

I believe the second book is supposed to be available soon. I started reading it on the same site he posted book 1 (not sure about linking to external sites) Picks up right where book 1 ended. He also has another book/series he has started call "Cry Havoc". I'm eager to read as well.

Patriots (1) by Rawles is great. Survivors (2) was OK and I don't plan to read Founders (3).

Heard the same from a few people who have read these. Still on my list to read at least the first one.

Also want to read this one.
Anyone read anything by Max Velocity? I saw a few reviews that seemed promising.

I purchased a Kindle DX this past November ans since then I have purchased between 90-100 stories for it. All but 2 are SHTF/Zombies/EMP stuff. The quality varies from abysmal to superb. One I read that stands out is
Arisen:Genesis
It starts out like a CIA/Spec Ops tech thriller and morphs into the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. It is a prequel to 3 other novels and I read it first. I purchased the first story afterwards and am reading it now. It is a bit different in tone and substance, probably because of two authors. Anyway, I unreservedly recommend Arisen:Genesis.

I'm about half way through The Passage -- interesting so far...

AH! The Tunnel in the Sky! I think that's the one where one of the characters thought going without a weapon would enhance one's survival chances as you wouldn't think you were the baddest *** in town and would tend to keep your head down more often! Something that has always stuck with me through the years...

(I'd still prefer to be armed and keep my head down! LOL!)

"In the Company of Heroes" by CWO Michael Durant (Blackhawk Down pilot)

More of an "S" hits the rotor, but an amazing true story of experiences in Mogadishu Somalia. The story will make you feel proud to be American!

Should the prequel be read first? I have books #1 & #2, but haven't got the prequel yet...need to know if I can launch into them or if I must wait...

If you haven't read the "Enemy's Foreign and Domestic" series it's really topical over what has happened over the last 4 months. Be sure to read them in order!!

For a longer read. "The Ashes" series will keep you occupied for many many days. A little far fetched, but a good read nonetheless.

Without a doubt, Patriots by James Wesley Rawles is a great read. Its basically a survival manual in the form of a fiction novel.

I had another thought that might be off track enough that you haven't read it: The Wool series by Hugh Howey. It's a series of about 10 novellas. Well written, and an interesting story.

Some might characterize these more as Sci Fi vs. SHTF, but I consider them to be a crossover.

Tunnel in the Sky is still one of my favorite Heinlein novels! Really good story. I would also agree on The Stand, but try to find the uncut version of the book that was released in the mid-90s. Great read. And finally, try the S.M. Stirling "Emberverse" series that starts with Dies the Fire. He can be a bit long-winded, but the first few books are quite good, IMO. The longer the series goes the more it morphs into fantasy, but it's still pretty entertaining and detailed.

"By Force of Patriots", Cameron Reedy - a decent/good book. Good action. He is a member of this forum.

"The Day the Dollar Died". John Galt. Economic Collapse followed by EROL. This is a free download but it's actually pretty good, even for a free book.

"Plague War", Jeff Carlson. Plague ravages Earth below a certain altitude. It took me a while to figure what was going on but that might be because I had stuff going on too at that time. The concept was interesting.

"Nature's End" Strieber and Kunetka. Dystopic near future. Environmental chaos. These are the same authors that wrote "Warday". Sort of a difficult read for me but I enjoyed it. I'll have to re-read it as it's been a while since I last read it.

"Ill Wind", Kevin Anderson and Doug Beason. Bioengineered organism destroys petroleum and petroleum based stuff. It sort of has a liberal slant but the idea and repercussions are interesting.

"Fallen Angels", Niven and Pournelle. This is one of my all time favorites. If you like SF then you will enjoy this since SF fans play a key role. Earth is in an ice age. Technology/science is scorned. Space is nearly abandoned. Fans to the rescue!

"Oath of Fealty", Niven and Pournelle. Giant arcology in LA during bad economic times. It's written in the 70s but it's still a good read. Initially the idea did not interest me but being a Niven and Pournelle book I persevered and ended up reading it twice.

"Make Room, Make Room", Harry Harrison. Also known as "Soylent Green". Over populated Earth with dwindling resources. As usual it's better than the movie although I enjoyed the movie too.

"Molon Labe", Boston T. Party and Kevin Royce. Wyoming secedes. Interesting concept. Not much "action" but the ideas that are floated are provocative to say the least.

A lot of people like "Lights Out" by David Crawford. I thought it was meh...but it was an entertaining read at least with good action. I think that it may still be available for free but it's also available on Amazon for a reasonable cost.

If you want nitty gritty, pure SHTF then check out Jerry D. Young's stuff. Some of it is still free. Most of them are pretty formulaic but they get the job done. One of my favorites is his "Disaster In the 'Burbs" which is the story of a single woman prepping and going through SHTF times in the suburbs.

Day by Day Armageddon books are great, heard the last is a stinker tho.
I hated Tooth and Nail, I want my $2 back! kidding. That was an amazing book. I had to throw it out because it was so bleak and I kept re-reading it LOL

Did you guys read ZA Recht(RIP) Morningstar Strain? Great books. Guy was only 26.

OK now I gotta read the Infection by Craig DiLouie. $5 on Amazon Kindle, I can't say no!

I read the Turner Diaries just to see what all the fuss was about. It foreshadowed today's events, and certainly possible ones. Hardly great character development or anything, but if the powers that be demonized it, it's probably worth checking out, especially for free on the net.
