Default CA DOJ Approved Lock/Safe Question

OK, something just occurred to me.

WHEN EXACTLY are you required to have a Cal DOJ approved safe or locking device?

Is it just at the time of purchase when you pick up your firearm from your FFL?

Or... if you are storing the gun at home where there is a kid present, does your locking scheme need to be on the DOJ list as well?

I mean, I consider mine to be pretty well secured from my kid. Trigger or cable locks and then also locked inside a sturdy cabinet (but not a gun safe). But I checked and my trigger lock is NOT on the Cal DOJ list for some reason.

The requirement to have a safety device is a check-off item for an FFL before delivery.

If you submit a safe affidavit - optional - you should really have the device you report; you sign that form 'under penalty of perjury'.

Beyond what you use when picking up your gun, there are no requirements.

I doubt if something did happen where say a domestic issue and she told LE you have a gun, she show LE the gun and LE try to say well its not a DOJ approved lock and charge you with something. You should be gtg in your example.

To my understand (LA county), if kids in the house you must have guns locked while in storage. No kids, no requirement of lock inside house.

I've found that many ffl's interpret the law a little differently.
The friendlier ones usually let you get away with any kind of cable lock with no documentation required.
On the other end, they may require you to buy a lock from them, just because they can.
