Ron, this is great news. Congrats. This also helps me, as I have taken a full CCW course in a neighboring county and only need the instructor to attest. Then I will still need the qualification part here in CoCo. There is finally detailed info on the SO website. Thanks for the info.

I'm still cynical until I see more approvals. But this is great news! Hopefully a step in the right direction for all.

I also got an email this am stating that I was approved (initial application June, interview mid Sept). Apparently the training part for 8 hrs is being done by outside providers and the Sheriff just handles the qualification now. They provide no list of acceptable trainers. I have an email in to see how we know if the trainer is acceptable. Updates apparently in bold

From the cert as to who qualifies to offer training:
The Office of the Sheriff only accepts instruction from CA Department of Justice certified firearms instructors or CA BSIS certified firearms instructors. Chief or primary certified instructors may be assisted by non certified instructors but the chief or primary instructor must have taught during the applicant’s training class. From what I am seeing these classes are over $300. So much for Constitutional rights. Anyone have suggestions as to where I should go? Last edited by Gator15; 12-02-2022 at 10:30 AM.. |

I paid USD 229 for my 8hr initial CCW class. If I also wanted to apply for Arizona non-resident CCW (for reciprocity in 31 states), add 60 USD extra to the bill. I ended up not applying for AZ. |

Also for CoCo you have to qualify twice--once at the 8 hr class to pass then the Sheriff makes you qualify again at the Sheriff's range. It would seem that qualifying before a DOJ or BSIS certified instructor should suffice as it does in other counties, but not here.

Ya, I read that too. I like that we can use outside instructors. But then I have to go pay to do the qualification with the Sheriff as well? Or is that qualification free? I mean how much is this adding up to now? Application Background check/Fingerprint scan Training Course Qualify with the Sheriff Actual CCW fees Gotta be AT LEAST $500 plus ammo costs for both training and qualifiction |

I think he is in the same boat as me--need to take the 8 hr class still. Pete Enea at CoCo Sheriff Dept., confirmed that to pass the 8 hr class you need to qualify at the range at the class; that's part of the certification. Then you take your certificate from the class to the Sheriff's range (whenever you can get an appt) and qualify in front of the Sheriff's Dep.

Yes. I will have to qualify a second time.
I already took a qualifying class. I took it because I’m also in process with Concord PD. I may end up with two permits! CPD sent me straight to training. I still have to do Livescan for them. But I’ve done their 16 hour training and passed their qualification. I’ve passed the Sheriff’s background check and been approved to proceed to training, but I’ve already done that so all I need to do now is sign some final forms and go shoot the qual. Which agency will move faster? |

Awesome! Thanks for the information. It seems you mailed it a couple of day after me, but got the LiveScan back a week earlier. Hopefully I get a phone call from the CCC Sherriff's office soon.

Defensive Accuracy in Dublin. The course I took was the 16 hour (2 day) course required by Concord PD. $399.
CoCo Sheriff requires the 8 hour course. I assume it’s half the cost. |

I noticed it said not lights, lasers, red dots, etc. for qualifiction (which I find weird that you can't even have a light on the gun even if you don't turn the light or the laser on....)
But anyway, take the light off the HD pistol (would be a backup EDC anyway) for the qualification. But I assume that is only for the qualification. Like there isn't a law saying you can't carry the gun with a light on it right? Or you qualify with iron sights and then carry with a red dot? |

Any downsides to applying to both ConcordPD as well as the Sheriff? I might try that too. I saw your post about Defensive Accuracy in Dublin. Will you have to take a secondary 8 hr course for the Sheriff? Or does the 16 hour course cover for both County and CPD requirements?
I was waiting to see if there was any movement in our county before I applied. Congrats to you and others. Quote:

Hi guys! So since my article came out I have received a few emails from people telling me they have been told that they are now approved pending the completion of training. I am interested in keeping track of this/comparing applications to each-other , so please message me or email me if you are one of those people! rmercader@bayareanewsgroup.com. Also if you were denied, I'd love to hear from you too.
CC Sheriff's office has still NOT told me how many permits have been issued before or prior Bruen ruling... They have also told us they need a few more weeks to respond to our records requests. In case anyone is interested, Marin County told me in 2022 they got 133 requests issued 32, denied 2, |

Never thought I’d live to see the day Marin would issue more than a handful per year. Sanchez replaces Ahern January 3rd. If you find out her position on CCWs, please post in the Alameda County thread in this forum. Keep up the good work!
