Default Finally a G3 Tag

Ok it finally happened and I drew the G3 Goodale Tag and I’m stoked to say the least. Now the planning starts and the work begins.

If anyone has info about the area/hunt please chime in.

1. Hotel/Motel options
2. RV Sites - I own a 28’ travel trailer would like some amenities for extended stay. I’m thinking of dropping my trailer someplace if it’s safe so I can make a few trips over.
3. Campgrounds where I could park my trailer - 4-6days.

I had 20 points and have applied every year for G3.

I know nothing is a sure thing however a buddy that’s an avid Hunter said I drew the Holy Grail…. Lol.

CRUZR, pretty sure MOST campgrounds are closed then[Dec?]. Taboose will be open, just not sure about leaving unattended for a couple of days.
From Taboose Crk. to Lone Pine Crk., you have some excellent ground to cover.
Need a bit more info, PM me.

Congrats. It's weather dependent so figure out what you will settle for and go from there.

Taboose for sure, you might also consider renting a space in Aberdeen, Indy or lone Pine for a month or two, Scouting for anything other than learning the lay of the land is fruitless untill snow starts hitting the ground.
This may be a better than average year for the unit as there hasn't been any significant snow since 2017. Don't get your expectations to high this hunt is only a shadow of its former self due to over hunting and a very large population of cats.

Thank you. The work started today and no call backs except 1 guide.

I’ve been looking at hotel/motel vs rv sites vs vrbo etc ….

Weather dependent I may spike camp up by one of the bench’s.

That time of the year (December) the deer are all down from the mountains in the valley. That is why the G-3 success rate is so high. You will probaly have them in your campground. Even last year, which was a poor year for X9B, there was an 80% harvest rate for G3.

Well now; you need to get over there and get the lay of the land. Remember the spots I was talking about? Pretty damn warm right now.Wait for fall.

Go high in G3? No. If the snow flies between now and the opener, the valley floor is a huge positive bet. I've talked to CRUZR about good selective areas to scout and hunt once he's there. Into the canyons a bit, but, higher? No real need. Been there, done that.

I would bet there is some bench country above the valley floor that’s going to hold the more mature deer if trophy hunting. Those late season hunts put a lot of deer in areas where they can be easily seen from roads and easy country to walk. The deer hanging out in those kinds of easy areas generally don’t get very old because they get shot.

Dec 3-18…. I’ve contacted guides, looked at camping and rv places and have decided that just getting a hotel room is the best bet. I booked in Independence and will be covering a lot of ground. I’ve spoke to some biologists and DFW out of Bishop…

Yes, that’s where the big ones hang out. One guide I spoke with said he watches the big ones in chest deep snow still reluctant to go into the flats. So I’m scouring topos looking for benches above the popular drainages. Dependent of what the conditions are on the ground will depend on if I can get there….

Man...... if you don't have OnXhunt, get it. I used it this year for a relatively hard hunted area, and it showed me an my partner the way. I got mine, he whiffed on a 4x4, and it was all because we studied the crap out the OnX maps, made our marks and plotted out hunting areas that turned out to be gold. You'll find your benches, and you'll see the best approaches if you take the time to use the tools it has.

Yeah, I need to spend some time checking that out. I have a ton of 7.5min topos that I’m scouring now. I’ll spend some time looking at it too..

Thanks.

Copy that. There is indeed some very good bench country above the valley floor. CRUZR has some mighty fine landscape to look at.

Those elk just sort of wonder around. You got snow snow so they won't be out there. there are camp grounds right at good ale and some county ones down by fish springs. A few motels in Independence. Id cruise the old 395- shouldn't be too hard to find the herd. Had Seen this earlier I could of helped you a little more. Talk to some LADWP guys if you see them i their trucks cruising around - they know where the herds are. Good luck
