Default Need a Gamer-Assist: Graphics card for 4k Monitor...?

So most of my career, I never really played graphical games on a computer, since Everquest OG was a thing... and I always uninstall Solitaire.

Since I've been out of the gamer-loop forever, and my daughter was given a 4k monitor from her grandparents, her 1GB RTX something won't go over 5-10FPS, so she's going to need a newer video card.

I am perfectly happy on my MSI 4GB GTX 1050 Ti, for the games I play and some home video editing in Adobe Premiere,
but with all my doing searches for what card is needed on a 4k monitor and games, I get mixed search results...

Looking for one-monitor usage, res was 3XYZ*Some-crap, and I didn't take notes, and she promptly swapped it back to the old monitor because games...
(Shoot, I sound like a "user"... )

Other sites say a RTX 3080 is what is needed, but I ain't dropping $780 on a video card for my daughter's game-rig, if that is what she needs, SHE can start by washing the cars, and truck too!

Can someone give me a run-down of if a GTX 1080 will work with a 4k monitor @~30-60FPS?

Please advise,
- THE 86'd

Depends what games you are running...

I have old Quadro K4200s that will run things at 4K/60 but nothing current... Really depends what you are doing.

Can always run her games at 1080p on the 4k monitor for better fps. Just use 4k mode for non games.

Oh, assuming just change the res in the game itself to 1k...
I'll have her try that.

Thanks, y'all!

for a card that old, its likely she wont see that high of fps even running 1080p. dropping resolution will increase performance. until she can pay for a $1k video card herself.

a 1 gb rtx is around $100

Forget it. You're not running 4K gaming with anything less than a 3080 unless you plan on running the lowest graphical settings, which kind of defeats the purpose of running in 4K. Have her run her system at 1080 or maybe 1440 resolution depending on what card she's running. If you can get a used GTX 2070 for a decent price, you could go up to 1440.

Any "Game Rig" that is currently using a video card that has a whole 1 gig needs to be kicked to the curb and have a new one built.

This guy has great content for PC Builds. 1440p gaming rig, Under $700.

This site has been very handy for me to determine which card to buy. For you, look at the right hand column for 4k resolution. You want 60 fps or higher average. Looks like your best price for performance is the RTX 4060.

Ok needs to also state the rest of the pc specs.

Getting a new GPU means nothing if the pc is running a 8gb ram. With a 10 year old CPU.

can't you just play 1080p? i watch some vids on tests and 1440p (let alone 4k) fps requires much horsepower.

i think it's nexus gamers wehre they show specs and performance based on resolution - 1080, 1440, 4k etc

I think it does mean SOMETHING even if you had a old i5. If you had a really trash 1 gig GPU with little memory before, it makes a big difference if you slapped in a RTX 3090. Even more with 16 gig system memory though.

The specs are decent if a little behind the times. If these were my specs, I'd probably pick up an AMD RX 6750XT, IMHO, the best value for performance currently that won't be overkill for this system.

yep, thats a good card.

op, its important to verify what power supply she has as this card and all good quality cards require a good amount of power. i believe minimum specs are 700 watts.

That system won't have trouble feeding just about any graphics card.

I -love- ray-tracing, so I would go 3070ti or higher. Visual eye candy and added immersion.

If you don't care about RT, I would still recommend an NVIDIA card for the drivers and latency tweaks and DLSS, but I will admit to being biased.

Hard to argue with the specs on the upcoming 7900 XT and XTX cards; at $5-600 cheaper MSRP than a 4090 without the stupid connector Nvidia uses seems like a no-brainer.
