Default My home made air gun

I was messing around at my friend's shop and made this air gun. It was originally going to launch tennis balls for the neighborhood dogs, but my dog didn't like it. A neighbor was looking for a gift for her husband and asked if I'd make one for their desert trips and make it to launch potatoes. I said I'd do it and I knew I couldn't just give them a pipe with a tank and valve.

So, after about 5-6 weeks, this is the result. The tank is a propane torch cylinder that typically has in excess of 200 psi in it and I believe is capable of over 300 psi (I have enough of them i may hydrostat one to destruction). The valve is a Irritrol sprinkler valve rated to 150 psi, the trigger is a simple air bleed button. The grip is a $5 AR-15 part, the barrel is 2" x .065" aluminum, the shroud is 2.5" x .065" aluminum, the pic rail is from raw extrusion and milled to fit the shroud. The red dot is $30 Amazon and the light holder is a cheapy. Nearly everything is either scratch made or highly modified. There are 4 components with single-point threads I cut on a lathe. It's not particularly powerful and it was never intended to be. You can buy stuff on amazon the probably shoots as well or further. This was designed as a cool looking and novelty gift.

Slap a Men In Black sticker on that and tell friend you built two, one for him and one for some guy from Israel.

That’s cool, KUDOS to you for going all-in on a fun idea.
Your neighbor’s husband will love that thing and be the envy of everyone.
I’m sure you already have another project in mind, can’t wait to see.

If this was in the OT forum I would say you need to “post pictures of the neighbor...”

Nah, I checked. Any propellant that combusts has been deemed a firearm in CA. So, the old hairspray (WD-40, starter fluid, etc) potato guns are "firearms" and need to be dealt with accordingly, but not necessarily banned. But this is compressed air, same as a paintball gun, t-shirt cannon, etc.. You can buy a similar functioning gun on amazon.

That is awesome!

If you were to make another one...

How much would it cost to have it shipped to me?!

Now a retired engineer, my contract consulting rate is $120/hr. I have about 150 hrs into that thing and maybe $300-400 in materials counting the scrap and ideas that didn't work. You being a fellow Calguns member, I'd give the courtesy 10% discount, so say $16,500 + shipping.

...or you can just buy one of these and customize it. https://www.amazon.com/JJSporting-La...PP89ZXQQ7524Q4

HB, it's just a single shot per charge. You could hook a compressor hose on and let it recharge between shots, but its still a muzzle loader. So, you'd be loading "hot".

As you can see, it was an exercise in creating something 'adequately excessive'. Like steampunk, tacti-cool is kind of a underground art. Or at least that was my goal.

It's not particularly powerful, but with 150 psi, it will launch a mini (1.9") dog tennis ball about 150 yds. I don't know about potatoes. You wouldn't want to have one hit you up close.

It is true, that it does not meet the CA definition of a firearm.
So, CA firearm laws does not apply to it.

However, CA imitation firearm laws do apply to it because it is a "BB device" [PC 16250(a)], which is a type of "imitation firearm" [PC 16700(a)(1)].

Applicable CA laws to what was made...

Penal Code 16250
(a) As used in this part, “BB device” means any instrument that expels a projectile, such as a BB or a pellet, through the force of air pressure, gas pressure, or spring action, or any spot marker gun.

Penal Code 16700
(a)(1) As used in this part, “imitation firearm” means any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.

Penal Code 19910
Every person who sells any BB device to a minor is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Penal Code 19915
(a) Every person who furnishes any BB device to any minor, without the express or implied permission of a parent or legal guardian of the minor, is guilty of a misdemeanor.
(b) As used in this section, “furnishes” means either of the following:
(1) A loan.
(2) A transfer that does not involve a sale.

Penal Code 20170
(a) No person may openly display or expose any imitation firearm in a public place.
(b) As used in this section, “public place” means an area open to the public and includes any of the following:
(1) A street.
(2) A sidewalk.
(3) A bridge.
(4) An alley.
(5) A plaza.
(6) A park.
(7) A driveway.
(8) A front yard.
(9) A parking lot.
(10) An automobile, whether moving or not.
(11) A building open to the general public, including one that serves food or drink, or provides entertainment.
(12) A doorway or entrance to a building or dwelling.
(13) A public school.
(14) A public or private college or university.

Penal Code 20175
Section 20170 does not apply in any of the following circumstances:
(a) The imitation firearm is packaged or concealed so that it is not subject to public viewing.
(b) The imitation firearm is displayed or exposed in the course of commerce, including a commercial film or video production, or for service, repair, or restoration of the imitation firearm.
(c) The imitation firearm is used in a theatrical production, a motion picture, video, television, or stage production.
(d) The imitation firearm is used in conjunction with a certified or regulated sporting event or competition.
(e) The imitation firearm is used in conjunction with lawful hunting, or a lawful pest control activity.
(f) The imitation firearm is used or possessed at a certified or regulated public or private shooting range.
(g) The imitation firearm is used at a fair, exhibition, exposition, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government.
(h) The imitation firearm is used in a military, civil defense, or civic activity, including a flag ceremony, color guard, parade, award presentation, historical reenactment, or memorial.
(i) The imitation firearm is used for a public display authorized by a public or private school or a display that is part of a museum collection.
(j) The imitation firearm is used in a parade, ceremony, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government.
(k) The imitation firearm is displayed on a wall plaque or in a presentation case.
(l) The imitation firearm is used in an area where the discharge of a firearm is lawful.
(m) The entire exterior surface of the imitation firearm is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, or the entire device is constructed of transparent or translucent material that permits unmistakable observation of the device’s complete contents. Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent.

After the 10,000th unit, I hope that it'll be $50 each. Lol.

C'mon man! You should know by now that most guys, especially the mechanically disinclined, expect that your machine skills, ideas and labor should fetch the princely sum of...a case of beer.

OK

So.... if one was to make a sabot....

say take a Red Solo cup

trim it short so it is 2" for the bore.....
fill a water balloon to fit inside the red solo cup sabot....

maybe a 12 oz coffee cup would be a better sabot

https://www.solocup.com/products/12-oz-hot-cup-to-go/

how far and fast could you shoot a water balloon?

I made a potato cannon with a big piece of pipe, a reducer, and small piece of pipe when I was a kid. I used a twist flint sparker to ignite it, and swabbed gasoline inside the chamber for the combustion. The big pipe had a screw-lid. Probably could have blown up in my hands, luckily it never did.

Not to be a debbie downer, but if that blows up and injures the person you made it for, can they sue you?
