EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT CHECKLIST

Three-day supply of non-perishable food and three gallons of water per person.
Map marked with at least two evacuation routes
Prescriptions or special medications
Change of clothing
Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses
An extra set of car keys, credit cards, cash or traveler’s checks
First aid kit
Flashlight
Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
Sanitation supplies
Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)
Don’t forget pet food and water!

Whether you’re facing a potential evacuation due to Hurricane Matthew or simply planning ahead, here’s a list of important documents you should try to take with you (based on guidance from the Insurance Information Institute and Red Cross):

Insurance policies (or any related/contact information you can find if you’re in a hurry)
Prescriptions and/or important medical records
Birth and marriage certificates
Passports
Drivers license or personal identification
Social Security cards
Recent tax returns
Employment information
Wills, deeds and recent tax returns
Stocks, bonds and other negotiable certificates
Bank, savings and retirement account numbers
Copies of your pet’s medical records
Any other identification/tags for your pets and/or pet carrier

This is excellent information, especially the documents list.

Also consider keeping ALL of those important documents in a single envelope at ALL times, and then keep that envelope in your safe. This not only helps in everyday life (you'll always know where to find your critical documents!), but if you need to grab the documents and get out the door ASAP, you won't have to go digging around through your file cabinets to gather it all. Just open the safe, grab the envelope, shove it in your backpack and go.

Is there someone in Orange County who sells the material that isn't so common like the blood clotting stuff and suture material? And is it true that you can get antibiotics from certain pet companies?

Blood clotting stuff would be CELOX or QuikClot, usually, and that's expensive but widely available.

Suture kits are available from veterinarian supply houses - but research the topic.

Many antibiotics - the 'fish' versions - appear to be identical to the 'human' versions, down to the manufacturer and markings on the tablets/capsules.

After surviving two fires this year and seeing the looting that was going on i say guns and ammo were useful.

I wouldn't trust the potency, purity of fish or any animal medicines

However in a pinch as a stop gap measure.

As this thread implies if you plan ahead you can stock up on the good human stuff.

Having raise three kids and a wife who all needed their widsom teeth out you be surprised by the amount of pain killers and antibiotics you can stockup on.

Thank you! This is all very good information.

Over the past several weeks, we have been going back thru our emergency preparedness list. We've had bits and pieces built up over the years.

I just got all of our backup drives, SS Cards, ID's Credit Cards etc in a waterproof case (Harbor Freight) and got a change of clothes, shoes etc in a small overnight duffel.

We've gone over our Evac List. We have 3 Levels (Get out NOW, 15 minutes, 1-2 Hours). The list is ready to print and laminate. This will be put near our back door and the bins for each level clearly marked.

We also organized all of our Medical Conditions and Prescriptions along with the prescribing doctor and the pharmacy ph # & RX #. Had to do the same for my mom since she is under our care now.

Something to consider is that laws and regulations vary based on jurisdiction and circumstance. For instance, a 2016 piece... "I HAVE TO EVACUATE. CAN I TAKE MY GUNS?" ... related to a 'special' law in Florida. Here's what the ABA had to say about that bill and related others in 2014.

Juxtapose that to a North Carolina town this year...

A town near the coast of North Carolina updated its state of emergency notice on Tuesday after ordering residents not to sell, purchase or carry firearms outside their homes in advance of Hurricane Florence...

When it comes to California, you might peruse the 2015 CAL OES pamphlet. What is cited in that pamphlet seems to reflect Federal Law as related to firearms and emergencies. Pay particular attention, however, to the limitations and exceptions...

...Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit any person in subsection (a) from requiring the temporary surrender of a firearm as a condition for entry into any mode of transportation used for rescue or evacuation during a major disaster or emergency, provided that such temporarily surrendered firearm is returned at the completion of such rescue or evacuation...

Of course, you might note Louisiana's preemption law, then remember what happened after Katrina...



In short, if you wish to include firearms in your list of bug out equipment, you're going to have to spend time figuring out what laws exist in your area which (could) 'alter' the norm in an emergency/disaster. Remember, relief for something you consider 'unauthorized' comes long after the fact and loss of possession of the firearm.
