Just a warning to Idaho, especially N. Idaho; I'll be moving up there in July...LOL.

I'm tired of you guys bragging about freedom, and guns you can own, and Constitutional carry, etc. So, I'm moving up to see what all the fuss is about.

I decided on the North mainly because after making three trips to Idaho I found a nice house that met our needs at a ridiculously high price, but doable and much less than our California house.

We were lucky to stumble across this place not on the market yet, nice homes at a decent price are hard to find right now in Idaho.

Anyway, looking forward to being an Idahoan.

I've never been a liberal politically. I was somewhat socially liberal in my party days. But when I got married and had kids I got much more socially conservative.

I've voted Republican since I was 18. In truth I haven't trusted the GOP for years, but there is no alternative.

I don't fit in in Commiefornia any more. Was born here, I'll die in a free state, supporting freedom and conservative values.

BTW I found an excellent Sushi place in CDA! iSushi. Last place I expected to find good sushi. At least our meal was good.

The people are really nice in Idaho, I'm getting used to waving at other drivers and acknowledging people walking by.

CDA is not the same as other places in Idaho, but its still way better than CA.

Thanks, I'm excited about it. Yeah, my son loves Couer d'Alene he'll be there working part of the summer, so I'll probably see him in August.

First, it depends on the pistol. Let's say you want to compete in a steel challenge match using a Sig MPX pistol. You can't - unless you register it as an SBR and slap a stock on it. Then it qualifies as a pistol caliber carbine. I used this example because the fastest times shot at our steel challenge matches are either shot with a .22 (SBR, rifle or carbine) or a 9mm SBR usually an MPX. They are much faster and more accurate than a pistol.

Second, most LEOs can't tell the difference between a brace and a stock. So, if you have a braced pistol in your possession, don't be surprised if the first question is "do you have the paperwork for that SBR." Good luck when you answer "no." (FYI, the ATF has offered opinions in criminal cases that braced pistols are unregistered SBRs for local LEOS. So like I said, good luck with that.)

Third, to the extent that you are talking about an AR with no brace, I'd point you to my first argument, i.e., they are much quicker and more accurate with a stock. However, if that doesn't matter to you, I'm agree with you that there is no reason to register it. But when you hang a 1lb or more suppressor off the end, you may decide that you do indeed need that stock.

Finally, there is the simple fact that the ATF cannot make its mind up as to whether braces are legal or illegal or whether you can shoulder them or not. And, if you find the letter that ATF sent to SB tactical, you will find references to the cases in which ATF agents testified in criminal cases that braced pistols = illegal SBRs. So I'm not willing to risk up to 10 years in club fed and $500,000 fine over a $200 tax. Apparently I'm not alone because hundreds of people file Form 1's to do this every day.

So my question to you is, why wouldn't you register a braced AR Pistol as an SBR if you could legally do so?

My question was of a basic nature in that if the ATF is allowing AR pistol braces in whole, then it is a pistol no different than a Glock 17. Until they produce a regulation, the law is not established and thus, not a crime. One guys opinion in court is not in sum, tantamount to a national standing.

So my thought was if it’s legal as a pistol, it’s more desirable and less intrusive to leave it as such, without injecting bureaucracy into your life.

First, Welcome. Remember to bring the tool to remove your bullet buttons. LGS do not carry them.
Do you have a CA CCW permit. If so, you should take the 8hr class and apply for an Enhanced Idaho CWL while you are still a CA resident. Otherwise you will have to wait 6 months to apply. If you get an enhanced Idaho CWL while a non resident, when you move to Idaho it is merely a change of address. An Enhanced Idaho CWL and an Idaho DL means no NICS checks when you purchase firearms. You still have to complete the ATF 4473 form.

I took the enhanced class at Center Target Sports in Post Falls. All of their April 2021 classes are full, as is the May 1st class. From what I understand, LegalHeat offers enhanced classes in CDA. I have no idea what range(s) they use. Also check with the Sheriff for times that you can submit your application and be printed.

Idaho uses a prefix at the beginning of “regular” vehicle plates to show in what county the vehicle was registered. 1A is Ada county; K for Kootenai county, etc.

Depends on the plate number. If it is over 68,000, there is probably a 98% chance you are from another state and more people are escaping from CA to ID than from any other state. On the other hand, as long as you are a gun person and do not bring liberal/progressive views with you, being an refugee/escapee from CA is a good thing.

I realize that you didn't ask me - but I'm going to say why I won't...

If I make my pistol an SBR, then I'll require ATF approval every time I want to cross state lines with it. Where I live, it's 4 miles to the state line and most of the places I shoot are on the other side of it..

Maybe I want to get fuel or some food or supplies on the way to go shooting. Since town sits on the state line, I'd be severely limited to where I could shop with an SBR in my vehicle (assuming I'd not filed a written request with the ATF to travel across the state line).

I'll stick with the brace, and YES - I carry the ATF approval letter with any such firearm at all times.

I'd rather not say for now. 35 minutes above down town CDA. BTW the traffic kinda sucks around CDA.

I think I mentioned that I feel very fortunate to have, almost literally, stumbled into a great house. My agent is well connected in the area and knows someone who has a client that just decided to sell their house and build one closer to their parents.

We moved to sign almost immediately. With a contingency for our inspection. We were there two days later and it more than met our expectations.

WE ONLY LOOKED AT THREE HOUSES.

I'm standing in my driveway talking to my agent and wife (in CA) when my neighbor came over and asked if I was selling my house. I've known these folks for a longtime, can't stand most of them. I have yet to run into anyone, who gave off any kind of negative vibe about coming from CA, and as you get around, I have found there's a lot of ex-CA already here, 9, 18, 27 years! So, some may have had different experiences, but the natives have been very friendly to us, knock on wood!

I was like $280, for 2 years, with park pass, for a 21' Ford SD truck, crazy! Called Allstate today and changed address, Ins dropped $4k for the year! My wife loves ID more every day.
