Default CURRENT/RETIRED LEOS WHAT WAS YOUR ISSUED FIREARM?

Hello fellow Calgunners,

To all Current and Retired LEO'S please name what your issued firearm was from your respective agency. I always like to hear what was issued from different agencies.

Even though I'm not a fully sworn LEO, I work Security for LASD. We have an 832 post p.c. and in 2010 when I was in my short 5 week Academy, I was issued a Beretta 92FS. I checked the serial number and it's from 1993, almost 30 years old and still going strong to this day!

I have had several issued firearms through my working days. The Beretta 92 is among the best, even if it's getting old.

My first issue was a Smith+Wesson 19. I was a fantastic weapon, right out of the box. My agency then went to the Model 59 shortly after they came out in order to be compatible with our neighboring agencies. It carried 15 rounds, but could only fire a couple before malfunctioning. We successfully petitioned the Chief to go back to the 19's.

Then I went to Alaska to do fisheries enforcement and carried a 1911. It was by far the most reliable weapon that I've carried. I went swimming with it on two occasions (missed boarding ladders) and it's the only weapon that I could strip down to component parts and clean after salt water immersion.

With LASD, I was issued a Smith 15 for training, but carried a Model 66 and then a 686 when they came out. The 686 had to go back three times for warranty repair before I could carry it. It was a POS out of the box, but after the three repairs, it was a fine weapon. I'd always shoot a 296 or 297 score (out of 300) when I qualified with it. It was a standing gag with the range staff which one it would be. I also had to qualify with my 2" back-up gun, that one would always be a 292 or 293.

Then we converted to the Beretta 92. Mechanically, it was an outstanding and reliable weapon. I never had a problem with mine. I did have one colleague who attempted to shoot a gentleman who was pointing an M1 Carbine at him and threatening to shoot. The Beretta failed to fire (the gentleman tossed the M1 and ran). A post-incident autopsy on the Beretta revealed that the firing pin channel had been filled with crystalized Hoppe's #9 cleaning solution.

But there was a also a learning curve with the Beretta that I never mastered. My qualification scores were never consistent and stayed in the 275-285 range. For years, I kept my eligibility for the "DX Pin" (awarded to folks who shot 290 and above) using my back-up gun. I never earned it with the Beretta. After a few years, it came off of my uniform.

At the end of my service, we had the option of going to the H+K USP .45. I did that, mostly because I like H+K's quality, but also because I like handguns with large holes in the barrel. I never had a mechanical problem with the HK and was able to shoot a few DX scores with it. I never got used to it' "Top Heavy" feel and balance

All things considered, the Beretta was probably my favorite of the bunch. It just had an incredibly good design, intuitive feel and balance, and was quite reliable. The 1911 is in second place. It shared all of those qualities with the Beretta, but the trigger pull qualities (primarily the short travel after engagement) make it hard to recommend for duty use. That can be alleviated with sufficient training, but few officers actually get sufficient training.

@RickD427

Wow thanks for sharing! It was very interesting reading on what you carried throughout your law enforcement career, and yes I'll have to agree you just can't go wrong with the Beretta 92. But carrying those good ol' fashioned wheel guns must've been fun back in the day. Super cool too that you went swimming with your 1911!

My first and only issued firearm was a Smith Model 66 with a 4 inch barrel. It was inspected by the department range master upon being issued. The first day on the range at the academy the cylinder release went flying off. The academy range master repaired it and it was a nail driver. Carried it for 5 years. The department refused to issue semi autos so we had to purchase on our own but at first only Smith and Wesson. I carried a Smith 645. We where later allowed to carry other makes so I went with a Beretta 96, then a USP 45, followed by a Sig 229 and ended 30 years on with a Glock 31. My all time favorite was the Smith 66.

Thanks for sharing! Yes the Smith 66 would have been my #1 choice if I could've carried any revolver back in the day. Super cool that you carried the second generation 645, pure steel beast!

20160118_155946.jpgIssued a used S&W model 15, made in 1968, in the LAPD academy in 1981. Every other gun I carried was purchased by me. When I retired and became a Reserve Officer in 2011, the City of LA sold me the pistol for $60.00.

Is it the "Police Special"? On the slide is the letters "PS" in a shield. I still remember my Serial Number BER192450Z or something close to that.

I don't personally have pics of the actual firearms and I'll keep the employers confidential.

-S&W 4006. A stainless steel framed .40; 11-round mags; no accessory rail; fixed sights. This was in ~1995. I switched to my personally owned G22gen2.
This was a small p.d.

-Glock 22 gen2 (I think). New employer at one of California's 58 counties as a Deputy Sheriff in 1999.
-Glock 22 gen3 soon replaced the originally-issued G22gen2. We now had night sights and the accessory rail, but no accessories were to be used.
-Glock 17 gen4 until retirement (2017); personally-owned Surefire X300 series or Streamlight TLR-1 series lights mounted.

-Besides the handguns I was temporarily issued a Colt AR-15, fixed sight removable carry handle; triangle front sight; 16" barrel; old-school round handguard; fixed stock.

-And various Mossberg 590A1 shotguns.
--20" barrel; heat shield; bead sights; straight stock; later replaced with newer version.
--20" barrel; no heat shield; ghost ring sights; straight stock.
--14" barrel; ghost ring sights; straight stock

-Defense Technology 6-shot rotary launcher (for less-than-lethal rounds, but others used it for smoke and gas launching).

-Later, the 6-shot launcher was replaced with a single shot launcher (unknown brand); break open; with Eotech sight mounted.

I had a few personally-owned backup guns I used during these times, too, but these weren't issued.

Che is correct. When you retired from LAPD, the City sold you your sidearm for what they paid, even 40+ years later.

Yes it is a Police Special with the "PS" shield serial BER238XXXZ, also has the infamous "6" stamp on it too.

Super cool info to know that's what the city of LA paid for it back in the 60's, as long as they got what they paid back for it I guess that makes sense. Best part is definitely for the buyer!

Glock 21 with OEM tac-light, and S&W 438 BUG; transitioned to Glock 17 with TLR1 & Glock 26 BUG with the 438 on my ankle at times. Retired, and the 438 is still nearby.

My 1st issue was a S&W Mdl 66 4inch .38/.357 square butt revolver with pretty dinged up wood Magna grips. Issued round at the time was .38 Spc. Federal 95gr SWCHP +P. Issued leather was a Hoyt breakfront. After probation you could buy your own S&W 645, and I did so!

In the early 1990s, I took part in a request for approval for S&W 3900/ 5900 series, Beretta 92 and Sig P226. I carried a P226 until Glock 21/ 22/ 17 was approved and switched to Glock for what would be the majority of my years. Last duty pistol was a Glock 17 with a Surefire X300 light, stippled grip and Ameriglo tritium sights.

I was issued a Beretta 92FS 20+ years ago. It was literally luck of the draw that I got a brand spanking new one, as some others in my class got used ones. Mine is well worn now and has seen a very high round count with no malfunctions ever.

It sits in my safe at home and I will of course buy it at retirement. I have since carried M&P 9mm, a railed Beretta, and USP .45

When Glocks became an option I bought a G17 and never looked back.

Wow! Definitely old school I love it! Man forgot about the clamshell holsters!

Is your 68-2 marked "LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT" on the right side of the barrel?

I started as a reserve and we had to buy our own equipment. I bought a model 15 and carried that until I went full-time. I was then issued a model 66, which was a fantastic gun. I carried that revolver until they took it away from me in the early 90s. We all asked to buy the formerly issued revolvers, but the city refused and sold them all off at an auction.

Someone out there has my old model 66. It was distinct as the officer who carried it previous to me, had taken a belt sander to the left wooden grip and ground it down so that speed loaders would work easier. It was somewhat bush the way it was done as half of the Smith & Wesson insignia was still left attached to the wooden grip. It did work so I left it that way. I took really good care of that gun and it was never dropped or abused. Someone got a great gun.

We were given the choice to carry a department 5900 series Smith and Wesson or purchase an approved gun of our own. I carried that Smith and Wesson but never bonded with it. It was heavy enough to anchor the Queen Mary in place and wasn’t all that accurate.

While in detectives, I carried a model 60 chiefs special. Looking back, it was amazing that I served search warrants and actively looked for criminals while carrying a gun that was hardly up to the task. I am fortunate that I never had to rely on only five rounds when I should’ve had 15.

I ultimately bought my own Glock 19 which was carried in both patrol and detectives.

In the 1990s, when walking my Downtown LA footbeat, I carried a Beretta 92 in a right side duty holster and a S&W 669 in my left front pocket in a sleeve. Often drew the 669 from the left instead of my Baretta when at the driver's side of a stopped vehicle ( usually full of gangsters). The driver was often fixated on my holstered pistol and didn't see the pocket draw.

NICE!!!

Wow $250 is an amazing deal on that gorgeous 68-2, true piece of law enforcement history right there.
Understandable why they sold out in a day or two.

Cool that you carried 669 for backup and would draw it over your Beretta at certain times. I own a 669, great little gun. Love those old 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen Smith semi-autos.

@Rustlin' Jack

Yeah those model 66's were amazing revolvers, probably the best duty carry revolver for a cop back in the day in my opinion. That sucks that you guys couldn't buy them back, like you said someone out there got your great model 66. Cool too that you served warrants and went after criminals with that little model 60. That's why revolvers lost out to semi-autos in the late 80's and early 90's, as great as revolvers were you couldn't compete with the high capacity of semi-autos.

First issued was a S&W K 38 blued 6 inch. Carried in lowest possible top draw holster and drop pouch spare rounds. Later purchased a 586 6 inch and a Hoyt and 3 speed loaders/with pouch, from a Deputy in a divorce sale $100. Issued a 4006 later and at the end 4006TSW.

Still have the 586 and Hoyt.

We all asked to buy the formerly issued revolvers, but the city refused and sold them all off at an auction.

We were told we could buy our 66’s but the chief drug his feet. After a few years a new chief refused to let us purchase them. I lateraled to another agency and all the 66’s were later sold to an auction.

I, at times, have problems remembering my wife’s date of birth but I remember the serial number to my 66 without hesitation.

I, at times, have problems remembering my wife’s date of birth but I remember the serial number to my 66 without hesitation.
I don't understand why any agency would refuse to sell any of they're guns to any officer on the department. You were trained and entrusted/sworn to do so with said firearms to enforce the law, so now you aren't worthy enough to purchase said firearms once they are no longer in service within the department? It's a true shame when any officer cannot purchase their issued duty weapon, I know to many officers out there, they would agree there is a bond you have with your duty weapon. The things you have been through within your law enforcement career with your firearm, the experiences, the good times and the bad ones, that gun was with you every time on your person.

And haha yes I'm with you, I will always remember my serial number to my duty gun. Certain things you can forget, but I won't ever forget the serial number.

92FS in the academy in 1994. Carried throughout my career with 1,000’s of rounds fired and not a single malfunction.

Made SRT in 1998. Issued an MP5-SD, one of my all-time favorite weapons (if I ever escape CA, I will have one again, haha!!). Still have a bunch of the “restricted LE/gov only” mags for it.

On the SRT, we could keep the 92 or go with some sort of H&K (USP I believe). I stayed with the 92 and never regretted it. Such a great pistol. I’m certain I can field strip and reassemble it with my eyes closed, haha!!

Sept. 2008 - Issued a new Gen 3 Glock 22 with night sights. You could could buy your own Dept. approved light (Surefire or Streamlight) and Safariland Level III holster for a WML, then take a WML course to carry it.

Sept. 2021 - Issued a new Gen 5 Glock 17 MOS with night sights and a Surefire WML. Weapon mounted lights now required. You can buy a Dept. approved red dot sight and suppressor height night sights on your own, then take a class before you are approved to carry it with a red dot sight. I carry mine now with just iron sights.

Attachment 1091051Talking old school, here is my LAPD S&W model 68-2 with my clamshell holster. Bought 2 of these pistols, but sold one to my partner. Should have kept it.

Pretty sure I remember a story from I guy I used to work with, that his dad was LAPD (specialized in cold case homicides for many years) and had one of these clamshell holsters at some point. I think I remember him saying his dad shot himself in the leg while using that holster during a qualification.

If you didn't have a tight grip on the pistol when you pushed the release button, the pistol's weight would push the trigger down onto the button and cap a round.
There was a ND in the Central Station in the early 1980s where an officer attempted to remove his neighbor's pistol from the clamshelled Sam Brown hanging on the locker door. The pistol slipped and fired a round into the locker door. The RNL bullet left a deep dent and ricocheted into the locker room, missing eveybody.
They also had a tendency to lose the cotter pin in the swivel, causing the holstered pistol to fall off. I was searching in tall grass near Elysian Oark and looked- down to see I had no pistol or holster. Took a while to find it.

1999, Full time federal SWAT I was issued a S&W 5906 9mm action slicked up by the full time armorers.
2001, local LE agency, was issued a P229 .40S&W
2003, went to SWAT, was issued HK USP45
2019, as range master/firearms coordinator/SWAT TL, I switched entire dept to Gen5 Glock 17 and additional Glock 48 for detectives, Admin and Command Staff.
As of now, considering trading all Gen5 Glock 17's for the Gen5 MOS model, but I have to get it approved and funded first...that's like pulling teeth

The stainless Model 67 in this photo was an LE trade in gun that I found on Gunbroker in another state. It came in the original box and factory wood grips.

The receiver is engraved with “L.A.S.D.” below the cylinder, but I’m not sure what Department that is…

No way! That's a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department model 67! Extremely rare! LASD issued model 15's and 67's, the "L.A.S.D." stamped model 15's and 67's are very difficult to find as not many were stamped. You got a true piece of law enforcement history there!
