Default how do i get into PRS Matches?

I'm just wondering how to get started into PRS matches?

like what do I need to get started like what type of setup would I need to begin?

is there a caliber rule that can't go over a certain size?

what does PRS match entail?

I thank anyone willing to give me the info on this and I hope you have a great day.

I'm not sure what any of that means, but good luck with your build.

You'll be money ahead by just buying one of the many Production rifles on the market for $2500. If you want to be competitive at all you'll use a 6mm-something like everyone else does.

If you just want to fart around on the range and occasionally clang some steel there are $1500 rifles on the market that shoot pretty well, and you'll save yourself a thousand bucks.

Wait, did this change?

If you want to get involved with Precision Rifle Series (PRS) matches, search for one on practiscore, then go, watch, and ask questions.

CTA is in Piru, out by Simi Valley.

OP appears to be from San Jose, so maybe NorCal Precision is his best pick. Regardless, go out to a match and scope it out to talk to people. I've seen people show up with whatever they got and run it. We all started somewhere.

OP is doing it the smart way, research first.

I did it the back-asswards way, buy the rifle first. And then find out there's no nearby matches or even places to practice.

You can shoot PRS with a variety of rifles. The most common are heavy barrel bolt actions chambered in some 6mm or 6.5mm short action cartridge.

But there are also divisions for specific types of rifles:

Bolt Gun - Tactical for bolt action rifles in 223 or 308 only
Bolt Gun - Production for factory bolt action rifles costing under $2500 MSRP with optic costing under $2500 MSRP
Gas Gun for ... gas guns

You will also need shooting aids such as support bags, bipods and tripods.

Maximum caliber is .30, maximum muzzle velocity is 3,200 fps

In a typical PRS stage, the shooter will engage targets (usually hanging steel plates) within a set par time (usually 60-120 seconds).

The targets at my local match are as close as 100 yards and as far as 1000 yards, with the majority of targets placed between 200-600 yards. The apparent size of the targets are 1 MOA to 3 MOA.

Round count per stage is usually around 10-20.

The tricky part of PRS is that you will rarely be able to take your time to set up a nice prone bipod shooting position to take your shots. The stage procedure will have you brace your rifle against a hanging tire, or through a window in a plywood barrier, or from the bottom rung of a ladder, then from the third rung of a ladder, or on cinder blocks that you have to stack for yourself while on the clock, or on a simulated slanted rooftop.

That's where the support bags come in handy, to help you quickly build a stable improvised shooting position, shoot, then transition to some other improvised shooting position.
