As I've posted before, the only thing that will fix the Marketplace here is full-time moderation, with a paid moderator, and allow Contributors only. ![]()

That's a pretty great idea, I feel like the marketplace is where a mod is needed most being that it's the section where business transactions take place.

How about a forum for Stickies? It seems few people read them, many who say they can't find something in a search don't really try "evidenced by just putting in their own question and finding many answers" and they take up much of the space.
In there you could have: Penal Code (nice to have it in posts but replies could link to the sticky) Legal info stickies AR Stickies (just because it's such a popular topic) How to stickies (step by step stuff) All the flowcharts etc.......... and then get rid of all the stickies floating around all over the place that few read. People might start reading them Then any search in that forum would work on those stickies. For the Marketplace: $1 or $2 to place an ad. Ad time up limited to 15 days, no bumps. If it takes someone longer than a few ads to sell something, look at what you're selling and how much you're asking. If it costs you $10 to sell something and that breaks the bank think of the ad cost as a donation. Giveaways always Free. WTB ads Free. No ad packing, one item per ad. You want to sell hundreds or thousands of dollars and can't put up a buck or two to sell it? Get out. Last edited by SharedShots; 05-24-2022 at 10:02 AM.. |

I guess I don't have to contribute to have same access as others. Its np. I did for a year, but I guess no need, right?
Seems if I had donated for another year, it would be so unbecoming of me! LOL.

I think we are creating a historical database of the penal code, venues that allow/disallow CCW and other things like that and they can confuse people looking for information outside of the forum. No doubt most people come here through a search outside of Calguns and not because someone told them to come here.
Explanation: When we post via copy and paste it becomes searchable via the web. I am sure a lot of people do search before asking here but find multiple copies of the penal code going back quite a ways and some very important ones conflict with each other or are no longer accurate. For example, if you search for bullet button you'll find the exact text of the penal code - as it existed many years ago and without any content that that was then and this is now. Going by the number of threads asking the very same question over and over again it's seems like anyone could start reading the search results outside of CalGuns (or even within it) and see it rather hopeless to get the info as it exists in the present so they ask again. Wash, rinse-repeat. Instead of quoting things that change but which are very important, why not link to the current citation with a summary of what it says but so anyone that comes by later on gets the current information even some time from now? Granted, links can change but then nothing is often better than out of date or a bad link. If we're worried about some entity tracking who visits, newsflash, if they really want to know they can find out right here, the technology exists to make that determination. It's not just the penal code, it's any reference including venues where there are metal detectors that reveal you are carrying concealed and so on. I brought this up with the so-called where you can carry thread in the CCW forum. What is today can change tomorrow, better to link to the policy so that what they get is current or at the worst - not there anymore than go by what someone said was good when they visited. Who cares, it isn't now. Its like quoting reloading data only to find out later on it has changed and there was a mistake that created dangerous load conditions. Someone comes along and aside from the DD thing, uses that info. If you link to the data instead of copy and pasting it then that doesn't happen. I'm bringing this up because a significant percentage of CalGuns is copies of copies of copies and many of the copies are inaccurate, no longer apply or if someone acts upon that information, creates a legal hazard for them. The solution seems rather simple, link to instead of copy and paste. While that doesn't work for everything especially where just discussion takes place, when it comes to other things it can and probably does matter quite a bit. .

For example, the link to the 'official' California Code is http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml (which, annoyingly, seems to be down just now - another factor that discourages clicking on links!) ETA Ah, it's back - I had wanted to link to Penal Code, https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...nal+Code+-+PEN The calguns wiki, my own attempt at a repository of facts and explanations, is http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/Main_Page (In November of 2015, Calguns and that wiki were down, hard, for over a month; when it came back, I no longer had write access, so it has not been updated since. Much of it is fine; parts have fallen behind.) The 'assault weapon' flowchart is http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf -- in the header bar of every page displayed. It's correct and available, and folks will not, or do not know to, click on it. My current solution: add language approximately "this is accurate as of [posting date]..." to the text. I have had folks question 10-year-old posts of mine, which were indeed incorrect on the date questioned.

Always have a recent copy of reloading data, plus another from a different source. If you have old reloading books, you're stupid if you don't double check with the powder manufacturer's off the web, you're taking a big chance of maybe needing a new face, or worse ![]()
