there is a thread out there somewhere where a builder used a Dremel tool with a number of stacked cutoff wheels along with the little Dremel table accessory. If you can pull this off with a hand file, that would be pretty impressive too, but this takes the cake I think:

Great post Gaberaynes, KCStott and all, I love your sense of humor. My knuckles are bandaged from trying to finish my Aimsmall 1911 Dang those were some ugly 80% In hindsight, would never do it again. I am close to having one ready to go, but the hammer doesn't fit with either the safety or the original mainspring. GGGGGGRRRRRRRR

Default Finishing the Rails

So now that you have your groves well formed to can file and file and file and file and file Etc..... until you cant file anymore, than check your depth with the black mark you made earlier. s And see how much further you need to go.
Attachment 340104
Once you have just a bit further to go. turn over and Go back to step one and start over on the other side.
^^^When you are back to this point.^^^
And are really close to your depth grab a rubber mallet and tap(DO NOT POUND)the slide on
Attachment 340103
It will give you little groves where it is catching.
Attachment 340105
Find those and smooth out with a little file until the slide racks all the way back. do not force and take your time and the slide will have a really smooth action.

If you follow that process for both sides of the rails you should come out with good rails and a nice slide action.

But after I finish with that I use a really fine sand paper and polish the rails. That gives them that little bit extra.

At this point the slide glides like it is on glass, And once you add a little oil you can go plinking with just your frame, spring and slide.(Or shoot it across the room)

Not to often I know it takes for ever.
But when I get really close I will make about 10-20 strokes then check using an aggressive file.
After you file for awhile you kind of get an idea of whats up and down.

will you be updating this page when you do the other steps (barrel seat, drilling holes and final finishing) or will it be on your photobucket page when you have time to get to it?

So here is the deal I was going to do them, But I decided to wait till my jig gets here, So I can show how to do with and without together,
I figure it will be easier that way.
