Default Long distance safe move?

Whenever I've moved my 650lb Colonial I've just used the store's installers I originally bought it from. But that's only been moving it between different homes in the north bay. I'm probably moving to Texas in the near future, and I'm just wondering what the normal way of moving such a safe is that far. If anyone here has done that.

How soon are you moving? Maybe we can split the cost of a truck if you're taking I-10. I'm heading to San Antonio and I just need to transport my toolbox and air compressor. I plan to move by the end of this year.

650lbs is easily manageable with 3-4 guys as long as you're not dealing with lots of stairs. A good dolly and or 1" PVC rollers to move around on flat ground. Roll or pivot it into whatever your moving vehicle is. Moving the 1000 pounder I got recently up a bunch of concrete stairs in my backyard took some doing with me and 4 buddies.

I would probably leave it for the renters or new owners and have one set up at my new residence.

650 isn't really that much. I've moved 1100 lb granite blocks with a furniture dolly before. You could also rent a pallet jack.

Take the door off, and move less weight at a time?

Not set yet. Depends on when I can find a job there, and the urgency depends on if my religious exemption gets approved. Most likely early next year though. I never really considered moving out of California before, but the insanity of this state has quickly jumped to a level I wouldn't have believed they would even try if you told me in 2019.

I'd sell it before you move and then just pick one up once you get settled in

I moved mine last year from SoCal to Idaho. Its a nice Liberty Lincoln 700-800 lb range with a nice exterior design/finish, so I didnt want to buy a new one and didnt want chinger it up moving it myself.

I used my original Liberty dealer, came out, PU took back to their store and put it on a heavy pallet, bolted it down, wrapped it up in heavy cardboard and shrink wrap, and then 3/8" plywood outer box. They shipped it by freight to the nearest Dealer to me who brought it out and unpacked it. All without any issues. Wasn't cheep per se, but what is, all total it was about $650.00.

If you plan to buy a new Liberty, better line one up now, they are 9-10 months on a new order, just like everything else these days and they eliminated some of the product range in their lineup.

Good luck with your move.

Get it onto a pallet and crate it. Stuff like that gets shipped all the time and that weight is not an issue for freight moving professionals. Professional crating companies will know how to keep it safe...just like packing glass and shipping it worldwide.

Of course, remove any firearms or ammo if you have anyone besides yourself take care of the move.

Go to Costco and buy their kick back dolly. They support 1,000 pounds.

Easy to move safes and stuff. I just helped a neighbor, and fellow Calguns member move his big 700 pound safe using my dolly. We removed the door, and rolled the safe right down the truck ramp into his garage. Same with the door. A few weeks later we used the dolly to move the safe into his house after the floors were done.

Easy peasy.

I’m having a safe mover get mine up/down a gang of stairs from my office to the garage.
Moving company will do the rest.

I had my approximately 700 lb safe moved by the movers who were already moving all my other stuff from CA to TX. They did a pretty decent job, didn’t have any real issues.

When I moved from Rancho Cordova to Las Vegas, I had everything planned: I picked up the truck at noon on 9/4. The safe loading crew showed up at 2:00 and loaded the empty safe and some tool boxes. On 9/5 a different crew arrived and loaded my household goods. On 9/6 I drove the truck to Las Vegas. On 9/7 a Las Vegas crew showed up and unloaded the truck. They overestimated their ability to move a 1200 pound safe. I got lucky and a billiard table mover, just breaking into safe moving, was available.
Overall, it went pretty smoothly.

Put it on a pallet and you can move it anywhere and as far as you want.

Leave it with me, going across state lines might hurt the lock, so better leave it with me

Time for a new safe, it will be cheaper than paying someone to move it cross-country.

Never thought of this ^ I guess I shouldn't be to surprised that along with so many other things- safes might be in short supply now-a-days as well. Good thing they don't have micro-chips in them - do they? Outside of electronic locks or exotic temp/humidity controls? IDK

I rented a safe moving dolly as I had some stairs to go down. Stuck it in the back of my trailer, wrapped it up, tied it down, and towed it to my new place. I rented another dolly to get it out of the back of the trailer and into the new house.

PSA: Don't play with those dollies while you and your buddy are drunk.

I dont think so, the electronic lock probably does. I dont know exactly why they are slow, COVID/labor impact? When I ordered at the beginning of year their website said "Most orders in 20 weeks" so I planned on at least five months, but it was nine months almost to the day from when I ordered to when it was delivered.

Theres plenty of other brands you can find in stock Rhino, Cannon etc, but Libertys are way behind.

Ya, sell it before you move. Just list the safe as a Rare Unicorn and Off Roster. You'll get top dollar for it and probably more than what you paid for it, if you toss in a couple boxes of ammo and just buy a new one once you move.

Never understood the term "rare unicorn". Are there common unicorns? Redundant.

What a great idea. I just moved one from NorCal to SoCal. About $500.00 at each end to load it into and out of my truck. Thanks looking at a move to Texas in the near future.

The rare unicorns are declared safe by CA and are on a list. Those that aren't on the list and are so unsafe the rest of the country shuns them and they hide.

It's really not that big of a deal. I've moved at least a dozen safes. Some over 1,000 pounds.

A 700 pound safe is easy to move with two or three guys and a kick back dolly.

As I said before you can buy one at Costco for $95.

Plus you then have a HD dolly which you can use for many other tasks.

I used my dealer, West Coast Safes to pick up, store, and ship to our new place several months later at a very reasonable price.

Look what used safes are selling for, vs. new safes.

Now look how limited availability is on used safes, to find what you're looking for, you might be waiting a long time.

If you're putting it in a truck and doing the loading/driving yourself, as long as you have room, it shouldn't be an issue. Make sure you have people at the destination to assist unloading...

If you're having a moving company do the work, take the safe with you. It doesn't take much room, adds little when compared to the weight of your household full of stuff, and you now have safe and secure gun storage at your new home without waiting.

Now if you need a bigger safe (and who among us doesn't), sell the existing one and buy a new one when you arrive at your destination.

A 650lb safe is going to have at least a 100lb door and probably more than that.
Removing the door will get it to a manageable weight that you can move it with a refrigerator dolly by yourself.
A refrigerator dolly has a strap that will strap the safe to the dolly so you can balance it once you get it tilted so the weight is over the wheels.
You will need a couple helpers to get it tilted and to slide into your truck bed or trailer that you drive across country with and then a refrigerator dolly and friends on the other end to stand it back up and set it back down in the final resting place.

It really depends on the cost of the safe. Safes also are getting more expensive so the old it’s cheaper to buy another isnt always true. If you’re diy moving it’s not that expensive to move it yourself. Even if yiu have to buy a dolly that does the up the stairs function.

When I move…my safe is coming with me. I may buy another safe but I’m not leaving my safe

And if you're paying movers, a safe isn't that much of a problem in the grand scheme unless it's some giant monstrosity of a safe.

I'm starting to plan my escape from CA and been pondering items to move. I have several "smaller" safes. I think I may sell them and buy a new one when I get to my next location.
For shorter moves, I have always pulled the front door.

This is what I did, reduced almost half of the total weight.
