Do everything Camp cook knife
Hi,
I'm looking for suggestions on a all around good camping knife. I don't want to carry more than 2 knifes due to space. I'm a novice at the knife thing but I just bought my first Benchmade and it opened my eyes to what a quality knife feels like. I prefer to have one knife about 6" blade. Thanks! |

I own one, haven’t beat on it yet. I do have many Moras that I do abuse though, and haven’t broke one yet. Lightweight, very sharp, cheap and easy to sharpen.... My goto is the Companion, but it’s shorter than what you were asking about. https://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Comp...ra+comp&sr=8-3

For cooking, I prefer an elevated grip to keep my knuckles off the board (or, likewise, to have to hang my hand off the table edge while I chop).
I wonder if something like this wouldn’t be better in food prep: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...language=en_US Or perhaps similar, but not as beefy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...language=en_US Last edited by tokuno; 03-02-2021 at 7:18 PM.. |

For the last 50 years I’ve carried a Buck 110 or 112.
I have used them for just about everything. I currently have 1-110, 1-112, 1-110 automatic, 1-112 automatic, and a new unopened 110 50 year anniversary issue. And you can get them with any blade material you desire. |

Buck Compadre.
Made by Americans right here in the USA. It is a great camp knife.

In the end: A price point & final objective will serve you well.
Backpackers will have different needs than a car camper. 1 knife to some, means chopping wood & field dressing & while to another means cutting steaks & bottle opening. This isn’t directed necessarily to you op, just a general PSA.

You are correct. To be honest I didn't know what I wanted when I posted. I tried looking online but searches render top selling name brand knifes. Now seeing all the posts there are knifes for each type. Now seeing the price range and types of knifes my criteria is set. I'd like a knife around $100 with a nice sheath. No screws in the handle so it's easier to clean and no food gets trapped. This would be a cooking knife and not used for any other purpose. Jeepergeo brought up a good point. I'd like to buy a us made knife if possible. The knife I was about to buy says Swedish steel but I assume it's made else where (Mora garberg). |

If it’s literally just for cooking, why not take a kitchen knife?
https://www.amazon.com/victorinox-kn...ctorinox+knife And if you need a sheath for it, just fold over some cardboard & tape it up ~

For not much more than a piece of garbage made in the far east you can get a quality Mora that includes an excellent sheath and will cut your food. They are scary sharp oit of the package.

Buck makes some really nice, Made in the USA knives well within your budget and that come with a lifetime warranty. Consider the Buck 105 Pathfinder with phenolic grip, or the 119 if you want something bigger. These are classics for a reason. I've had my 105 for 35 years and it has probably another 30 years or more of life in it. I've got 110s that are about 40 years old and are still going strong.
You can find Bucks at Buckknives.com, WallyMart, and many other discount places on line.

You sir want the victorinox 8” chef knife. Best 45$ you will ever spend. Good enough for commercial use and comfortable to work with. I’ve used knives from the same line commercially cutting fish for years and still have everyone of them.
https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Fi...8D32/ref=nodl_ 6600 reviews for this knife with a 5 star amazon rating. Last edited by deckhandmike; 03-04-2021 at 7:38 PM.. |

If you really want to go light and minimal... a flat ground Spyderco folder as an option maybe. I always thought the PM2 was more of a slicer than a tough use blade. |

What is your budget? Most outdoor belt knives for all around work are 5" or less, I have a couple 6" knives, 7", 8" and 9" but they become a little unwieldy for most small chores over 5.5" or so. The larger knives I use for removing branches from saplings and bushes, batoning firewood, and chopping small dry branches into kindling. 5' can do some of that and carve, notch wood, make tent stakes, prepare food, and even baton.
I keep an approximately 5" outdoor knife on my belt and a 7-7.5" heavier knife for other camp chores and fire preparation. I also keep a silky Gomboy or or Big Boy Japanese saw. And sometimes a small camp axe. The Swedish Axes are some of the best available. Granfors Bruks are one of the best higher end axes. Knife prices are all over the map depending on steel choice and tempering, handle construction, and type of grind. Knife prices can go anywhere from $50 to $400 or more. I suggest around $150 or less for a good quality starter knife with a warranty. If you can get by with a 4" belt knife the Mora Garberg in carbon steel (less than $100) is an excellent example of an outdoor knife, but not fancy. Made in Sweden. Mora makes millions of knives. Be aware that many times a cool looking tactical knife makes a horrible outdoor knife. If you like Benchmade, the Leuku, although they've raised the price significantly, is made of a very tough high quality steel that won't break if you baton with it. I'm not a fan of most of the Benchmade fixed blade knives because of their steel choices, which tend to be a little more brittle. Except the Leuku in 3V. ESEE makes some good knives too. Tops makes good knives although sometimes in wild designs. Becker BK16 or 18, I've forgotten the number, makes a nice smaller 5-6" belt knife. If you want a fancier knife in the "buy once, cry once" category, I'd say take a close look at Bark River Knives. They use a convex grind, which I prefer. I'd recommend a knife in 3V steel. I have about ten of these in various sizes from 4.5" to 9". Needless to say, I love them. The prices look high for the 3V and Cru-Wear steel knives, but if you forgo the fancy handles and go with plainer black or green canvas micarta it'll save you a ton of money. BRK knives are made in batches and sell out, but you can pre-order from the next batch in many cases. https://www.dlttrading.com/bark-river-knives BRAVO ALPHAS2Medium.jpg More Bark River Knives BRK Survivor.jpg Another great outdoor brand in the same higher price range is LT Wright. I only have one, but it is currently my most favorite outdoor knife. The Illuminous 5. This is an excellent outdoor knife over 5". This knife has a Scandi grind which is not for everyone, but it is amazing on wood. The handle is large so you have plenty of leverage, but fits like a glove. https://www.ltwrightknives.com/illuminous-5.html Luminous5.jpg

For an outdoor knife that is going to be exposed to the elements and some beating, you want a full tang knife with a tough handle. Wood handles look nice, but G10 and Micarta (canvas) is the strongest material. These materials are also water proof. EDIT: Your outdoor knife should be able to handle this kind of abuse, if you want to be able to rely on it. BTW - I'm definitely not endorsing Schrade. If the knife has good steel, you should be able to hit the tip, contrary to what the video says. Just trying to give you the benefit of my experience and research.

I just bought a buck knife for our upcoming trip. We’ll see how it performs. A lot of my old camp gear either broke or disappeared. So we’ll look like greenhorns with a bunch of new gear! Lol!
