Default Recommend a day pack/backpack?

Looking for a multipurpose day pack/backpack/assault pack/shtf bag/whatever you want to call it. It will serve multiple purposes such as hiking, med stuff, holding my kids things, range trips, and if shtf I can carry extra gear, or, just when out and about.

I’m looking for a smaller size one, 30L or so. Any recommendations? I was on amazon and the SOG ninja ones look okay for $40. Then I see the 5.11 rush for $100. Any reason not to get the cheaper ones?

Thanks!

Cheap will rip & give out at the seams. They will use thinner material, won't be double-sewn or reinforced at stress areas and attachment points. Shoulder straps often are narrower and less padded.

Take a look at the Karrimor SF 30L for under $90. Very popular with bushcrafters which is how I was introduced to it. I have one as well as the expansion side pockets which will double the size.

I have heavy duty packs that you could drag behind a car and much lighter packs like Osprey. I tend to use the lighter packs alot more than the heavier ones. Treated correctly I have gone thousands of miles on foot with light weight packs with no issues. Of course if you are crawling on the ground you need something heavier (I don't do that much).

Jansport, Osprey and Maxpedition all make nice products.

I bought a clean woodland MOLLE II Patrol pack on OfferUp the other day for 30 bucks. It’s basically a beefed up Jansport. Seems tough enough.

Camelbak makes some nice options, and older models are often available at discount prices.

The best combination of design, durability and price I've had are Granite Gear. I have used Lowe Alpine, North Face, Osprey and army surplus and have switched over to GG for my last two packs (one standard and one flatbed for bear canisters). As noted above, well cared for they will last.

I have gotten some great deals in their outlet/clearance pages.

Eberlestock X2, not cheap, but I used as a day pack hunting, then loaded camp into/onto it and carried it all out. Clever expandable design.

Dana Design - Terraplane if you can find one

Mystery Ranch - which is made by the same guy that made the Dana Design packs

I actually am impressed with my SOG Ninja, it’s my EDC bag and have had it 3 years with zero issues. And I’m not easy with it. Got mine on sale for 25$ on Amazon. I have an LAPG 3 day operator bag but like the smaller size of the SOG. There are better bags for sure but depends on how much you wanna spend.

I have cheap packs that are really tough but heavy. LAPG makes decent stuff. I have large packs from them and large Duffle that is kind of like a Flatpack with pull out straps. I have small Voodoo packs and would probably try a Savior these days if they have packs. VERTX makes great stuff but heavy IMHO - based on three bags I have. I like the GAMUT line but have not handled it.

I just ordered a Mystery Ranch 25 liter pack with a 30% off code and it was only $84... I thought that was a good deal. I'm sure the pack will be great and it is very covert in a nice covert color like my REI pack that I used a lot.

I was looking a couple months ago in replacing my old, mostly worn out REI backpack that served me very well for the last 15 years or so. Was looking at the vertx gamut 2.0 (which I still may buy), but ultimately bought a vertx transit sling because I wanted a smaller EDC backpack.

Yes, Vertx is expensive and heavy. But it feels like it will last easily 10+ years and has heavy duty zippers. Plus you can carry armor panels in it (TSA legal for at least Domestic flights). You don't have a lot of exposed Molle that can scream tactical.

Cons initially for me were I had to buy a few hook and loop compatible pouches to put my regular stuff in. Still not sure where to put my sunglasses and reading glasses but getting more used to it.

I got the Mystery Ranch Street Zen and it is pretty tough and heavy too. Nice pack at first glance. A lot more heavy duty than my REI that never failed me.

I REALLY have liked my Camelbak https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018659055?pid=243193
I've had it for YEARS now as my fishing bag, and I truly beat the crap out of it season after season. I believe it has a pretty solid lifetime warranty as well
Check it out, you'll love it. I use my hydration bladder open and put a class IIIa panel up to .44mag stopping power. It's a good panel. Double duty as a bullet shield, and a GREAT weekender bag. It'll hold a couple rolls or a tent on the bottom and one on the top or front. It'll strap up just about ANYTHING you could ever want. Good luck with it man.

Love my Kelty Redwing32. Sturdy, looks like a regular pack (doesn't look like a military ruck). Good organization, solid internal support with a real hip belt (very little padding in the belt, but not hauling more than 20lbs in it either), my full load is 17lbs (more if I add a few bottles of water).
I travel internationally, this was the largest pack I could find and still make the under seat requirements for most airlines and hold my laptop.

My vote goes towards Mystery Ranch and Goruck bags. They tend to be on the pricier side but they're designed very well, made with extremely durable materials, great qc, and in Goruck's case has a superb warranty.
I've tried a good number of cheaper brands, as well as slightly pricier options like Maxpedition, and they tended to disappoint in one way or another.

And a small plug, I have a Mystery Ranch Scree32 and a RoboFlip bag up for sale at the moment. Feel free to take a look if you're around Sac. (https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1662125)

I like the military surplus 3-day assault packs. They can be had in "unissued" condition at a price well below the REI offerings and they are durable compared to any of the chinese crap that sells for more. If you look around and are willing to spend a little more, you can get one that's all brown (not camo). There are also numerous other parts and pieces you can add or remove from the molle webbing to carry extra stuff.

I got a 5.11 Rush for a lot less than a hundred on a Black Friday sale. Don't know if that will happen this year, but it's just a few weeks away.
