New update:
Called SJC Sherriff today and they stated starting September 3rd they will be going to online application. They stated it should go live on september 3rd if not check everyday after that.

There will be a link on the SJC Sherriff's website called "Permidium"

That link will take you to the online application. Once there you can do your online application.

When entering your information you will get a tracking number which you must remember and you will need to create a password to login.

In that application you will have the ability to scan and attach your documentation i.e. DL and 2 forms of utility Bill's for current residency.

The background investigators will contact you for more info and if they require more information or documentation you will just have to use that tracking number to get your application and scan and upload any documents they may need.

Hope this helps for all my people in San Joaquin County.

Also I'm doing mine for my 3rd renewal.

Good luck everyone!

Gordon Gray

Works out of Sac Valley Shooting Center.
Excellent instruction!

I used him years ago for my Utah. I don't know if he still does Utah.

I was invited to be one of the "guinea pigs" for the online renewal process. Easy peasey. I applied for my renewal through the on-line portal 8/2 including uploading documents. Today (8/26) I got my renewal approval email. Proceed with (4 hour) training and don't pick up my new license until 3 days prior to my existing permit's expiration. I'm a happy customer. Good Job SJSO folks!

Lots easier then the 1 year wait for the original CCW.

It's in beta stages? Or its live? Is it still recommended to do it 4-5 months ahead of time like someone previously mentioned? I'm due in March 2020 and was planning on Nov/Dec but this sounds like it's relatively quick.

So the online system will not allow you to do until your 90 days out, my expiration date is December 26th of this year and I wont be able to submit it until September 27th, if you try to do it out of the 90 day mark it will say your license is expired and say you have to do a new application, so unfortunately you have to wait till your 90 days out.

Good to know and I am assuming the license issued will be the cc style and not the laminated paper correct?

ALERT:

Our new CCW Online application process starts TODAY- 08/26. I just called and spoke them and ironically went online at the same time. Was told it starts as of today. As someone commented earlier, it looks pretty easy. We are going to work on my wife's application this evening. I also asked about my renewal and was informed to go on the site submit application 90 days out (as someone already stated) The officer/desk clerk who I spoke with said they hope to get the process down to 1-3 months for new applications. Currently 3-5 months. Still better than mine- that took almost 11 months total. But I'm not complaining. Just happy to see the process getting better. Good luck everyone!

Does the sheriffs office call you or send you an email when you are approved for your initial permit? Hoping to find out soon.

Dropped off permit 7/29
Phone call 8/6

Just thought I'd share my experience. Mid March I called for initial appointment and I was given July 8th. On July 8th I turned in my paperwork, paid my initial fees and was live scanned. At that time I was told they no longer interview at the time you turn in your application, an interviewer would call within a month. Exactly one week later I got that call, which lasted about 5 minutes. September 9th I received the email telling me to go ahead with the 16hr training. I took the training with Eagle Defense on Sept 14-15. (Would highly recommend James and only $120) on the 16th I called for final appointment and was given Sept 24th. Got it. 6 months start to finish.

I just picked up my renewal permit. I was in and out in 15 minutes. It was the only time I had to go down there. I did my renewal online, and the process was easy. My new permit is plastic, like a credit-card-sized plastic ID. I was told to start the renewal process online again 90 days before expiration in the future. Overall, the new process is smooth and easy!

I had a renewal appointment scheduled in mid-August, but they called and asked if I wanted to do it online instead. I think they wanted people to help test out the new online system, so they sent me a link.

When does your current permit expire?

Yesterday was pick-up day for my renewal. I was given the choice to complete the process through permitium.com. It couldn't have been easier. Apply on line 90 days prior to expiration of existing, take training class & set up appointment to pick up. Easy Peasey. Thanks Sheriff Pat Withrow & staff!

So it turns out there is a slight glitch in the process...

When the sheriff's office submits to the DOJ, the DOJ says
Quote:
"hey, there's no thumb print on the new "credit card" CCW"
or something to that effect.

I had to return to the sheriff's office and be thumb printed. My new credit card CCW (with my picture on it) was repossessed, and I was given an old style license with my thumb print on it... but no picture??

All very easy and professional process, just kind of a backwards step IMHO.

Hi All,

Just checking to see if any one has submitted for renewal lately. What was the process and how long did it take.

Based on the SO's website, I followed the instructions.

12/03- Submitted all necessary paperwork (scanned required documents) and paid fee in full.

12/10- Submitted firearms qualification certificate.

01/01- checked online and status indicates still being assigned to a processor.

My permit expires the last week of Feb. Starting to be concerned with remaining time frame...just a little bit concerned.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Odd that the DOJ would have an issue with the thumb print, but again, it's California. All other states that I haved a permit for don't require a thumb print on the permit itself!

Where are restrictions on firearm modification for our county listed? Is a spring kit prohibited? Is a trigger kit prohibited? etc.

Found the answer in the pdf FAQ on the SJ CCW site - only grips and sights can be modified.

Finished the online application yesterday. Soonest appointment available was second week in April. Not sure if it's standard to book them out that far to allow for application processing/checks, or if there is just a huge back log of applicants?

Some people are saying the instructor will inspect the weapon, and if there's a shoot, the weapon will be extremely scrutinized. Not sure who to believe...

The instructor does inspect all the guns listed on your permit. But properly installed modifications make the gun BETTER. For example, a Cajun Gun Works Defensive Carry Package smooths out and shortens the trigger pull to make it far less likely that a shot will be pulled offline and hit an innocent bystander. Same thing for a Apex Duty/Carry Spring Kit -- it makes the double action trigger pull on a J-frame smoother, better, and safer. Instructors check the guns to ensure that they are in good working order, operate safely, and function as intended. I've never met anyone, instructors included, who didn't appreciate modifications that improved the functioning of a carry weapon.

If there's a "shoot," then modifications are irrelevant, since the use of deadly force to stop an imminent threat of death or great bodily injury was intentional. Only in the case of a negligent discharge would modifications to the gun possibly be relevant.

But don't take advice like this on the internet. If you have doubts, contact the Professional Standards Division and/or your own attorney. But no matter what, always ensure that your carry guns are in good working order, operate safely, and function as intended.

I've never heard of instructors inspecting guns. None of mine have. They do verify the serial numbers that they will be including on the certificate but that's it.

Mine have basically done function tests while checking the serial numbers. During my last renewal, one guy had numerous malfunctions during the shooting portion of the class, and they inspected that gun more thoroughly before signing off on it.

I'm trying to figure out when I'm supposed to take the training course and range test? Pretty sure I have to wait for the "acceptance email" from SJC applications, then assume complete Training/test before the April appointment for live scan/prints/photo???
