Default Lead-Free Hunting Ammo for Henry .44 Magnum

I has been two years since I posted this thread:

https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...php?p=18985273

Certainly, with the popularity of Henry rifles and California now completely lead free for hunting, someone must have either identified an accurate lead-free factory .44 Magnum ammo or, better yet, developed an accurate lead-free load. My barrel slugs at .432. Thanks.

Barnes 200gr HP with 24grs H-110 and mag primer. Strong crimp. Shoots well in friend Henry and my Ruger RH pistol. Terminal performance is excellent

I’m shooting a 16” Marlin with a 1:38 twist and my best accuracy was with 22.5gr of Enforcer and a 200gr Barnes XPB.

I'm not enforcing an opinion here...but whatcha hunting and how close in range do you limit yourelf?

I ask because I've found lead-free ballistics in a similar handgun cartridge (high-pressure .45 Colt) to be absolutely miserable. To be fair, I've not tried Lehighs because I don't think they meet the expanding bullet requirement for California - I've only tried copper hollow-points.

I've got a Barnes 225 load with H-110 and a CCI magnum primer that is pretty accurate out of my Henry. It's not great out of my S&W 629 5", but it's accurate out of the rifle. I've taken a bear and a deer with it, and it's terminal performance is excellent.

How much H110 are you using?

I am using 21.5 gr H110 with a solid crimp. Its moving right about 1620 fps with holes touching at 75 yards, shooting off a rest. Skinner ghost ring rear with a fiber optic front. For comparison, the Barnes factory 225gr hollow point chrono'd at 1360 fps. So my load is warmer, but when I tried to push it faster, I lost my group. I put quite a bit of time into laddering and seating depth, and at the price of those projectiles, I am happy to say, that's my final. I also adjusted the front sight height accordingly, so my Henry Big Boy steel is set-up for that specific load.

Try here-

https://www.barnesbullets.com/wp-con...44-Rem-Mag.pdf

I prefer the 225 grain xpb in .44 mag. Barnes factory ammo is pretty good quality and seems to hit their advertised speeds.

Barnes’ 8 inch test barrel seems to achieve highest velocity with Ramshot Enforcer powder, but that powder brand is not common in my area.

Note the 3rd bullet is not lead free.

Thank you. I sent my rifle back to Henry who was willing to swap barrels for one with a tighter bore. Iíll try these loads once it returns.
