Default Can't Buy a Bible

So I want to buy a Bible, specifically, a KJV, that is complete, without anything missing, and without commentary nor new names of sections and whatnot added. I'd also like a reasonably small size, but not pocket sized.

I search on Amazon, and I get thousands of hits, but none of them meet my qualifications. They all either have stuff edited out or added in. Or I can't find what I want in the thousands of different versions.

So can I get some specific recommendations from folks here?

Don’t go through amazon.
Sword of the lord ministries has I think swordbooks or something along that line. They will only sell KJV.

Probably the best advice. I also want to get a 1970 NAB version. I don't trust modern publication, especially recently, with some of them even going Woke / gender neutral. Crazy that religious folks aren't immune to Neo-secular viral religions like The Woke.

Good for reference, but I want a paper book, preferably leather bound.

Well the trouble I'm having is that there are many different versions of the KJV. Like I said, I don't want things added nor removed.

Sword of the Lord is about as sound as they get when it comes to not messing with the KJV.

Get a 1611 KJV facsimile.

https://www.thekjvstore.com/1611-kin...imile-edition/

Super nice, but pretty beefy. They make even fancier ones and smaller ones. Even the KJV has been "messed with". Another great option is a Cepher. This has the book of enoch, etc. but its the hebrew names (Enoch = Chanok), so its a bit different, but you see Yahweh versus "Lord" in a KJV and other translation differences. The names are very different than what we're used to seeing, but its complete.

https://www.cepher.net/shop.aspx?ite...d-Edition-2021

I have both and their awesome, but pricey.

Also, pick up a Strongs Exhaustive Concordance. Really helps with research and finding things.
https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/strong...&idiq=12586718

Interlinears are also a really cool option. One page will have it in English and the other page will be in Hebrew (old testament) or Greek (new testament), so you can see how they translated it. Another cool tool for research.

Have fun!

KJV was good for it's time. Really good. But it had some problems that they couldn't solve at the time. For example, there were some passages (Daniel?) that they only had fragments of in Latin to use for translation to English. There was nothing to translate from Hebrew, Aramaic or even Greek -- just Latin. So they went backward, translating from Latin to Hebrew and then from Hebrew to English. It's been a while since I took a class on translational history so my details might be off. The way they did it was a dumb decision but it's what they did. Committees do what committees do.

But things got a whole lot better around the 1950s with the discovery of Codex Sinaticus. Any translation that happened before Codex Sinaticus's discovery needed an update. That codex really helped fill in some missing holes in the translational text.

KJV is good for history's sake but since you likely didn't grow up speaking the King's English, there are bound to be some misreadings. By all means, have a historic KJV around. It's a piece of history & a work of remarkable scholarship *for its time*. But for study, a translation from the same tradition of the KJV would be much better. The NRSV (NASB as well, I think) is one such translation. Wherever there is ambiguity in the translation, the team defaulted to how it was interpreted in the KJV and subsequent translations that defaulted to that version. Those also lean more toward the letter of the translation than the spirit (literal vs gist). Other versions, such as the old Phillips, Children's, etc. lean more toward the spirit than the letter. I think the NIV is a good compromise for personal use but the NRSV is better for academic study. At least that was the case about 20 years ago. I have no idea what academics use nowadays.

But the NKJV is a dumb translation meant to capitalize on people's ignorance so I encourage people to avoid that one (I have two copies, both heavily marked from years of study with them before changing over to the NRSV). Languages are always evolving. Nobody ever spoke or wrote in NKJ English. Translating from one language into another that nobody has ever used is nonsensical, except from a business perspective. A fool and his money...

The KJV translated “Passover” as “Easter.”

I still have my [New?] American Standard Version that a friend recovered in grain leather and brass snaps in the early 1970s. Much preferred that translation over the KJV.

Been awhile since I've cracked it open, but sincere recitation of The Lord's Prayer and reading another book detailing the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew Chapters V, VI and VII) have been my go-to in recent years.

To answer your question and without you being diverted to other translations, here is a great solution….

Bearing Precious Seed is a KJV Bible maker. They have absolutely beautiful leather bound bibles in several variants. I personally have a Bible collection of varying translations. But when I want to read a KJV, I pull out my calf skin leather one from BPS.

Here’s their website to order….

Don't get that knock off KJV.

The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years.[1] It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was used by William Shakespeare,[2] Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim's Progress (1678).[3] It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. (Pilgrim Hall Museum has collected several Bibles of Mayflower passengers.) The Geneva Bible was used by many English Dissenters, and it was still respected by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the time of the English Civil War, in the booklet "Cromwell's Soldiers' Pocket Bible".[4]

This version of the Bible is significant because, for the first time, a mechanically printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids (collectively called an apparatus), which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible, introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations and indices.

Because the language of the Geneva Bible was more forceful and vigorous, most readers strongly preferred this version to the Great Bible. In the words of Cleland Boyd McAfee, "it drove the Great Bible off the field by sheer power of excellence".

Many good suggestions but sounds like you’re not involved in a local church. Start attending church.

An amusing and accurate point. And to that point, if we hear somebody is looking to take up pistol shooting, get their CCW and shopping for a flintlock or a an old colt revolver, it's only fitting that people steer them a different direction, toward a glock or a sig, for example. But if they're a collector with a solid foundation of knowledge and experience & just have a taste for old classics, then there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

Obviously guys. What I mean is I want one of the 2 KJV translations (maybe both), without modern editorializing added. Like I said, I also want a NAB because I was raised Catholic, and that version is likely familiar to me.

Actually I have much more trouble with the old gothic font than I do with the old English. Way too many serifs. I just can't see the letters. But old English in 1950's Times Roman, not a problem.

Get an earlier edition say 1970s. Lots on EBay. Most KJV were edited around 2012 or so.
