Default Cool Story: AZ Guns Wonít Sell Ammo to CA Residents

I decided to do some window shopping while in Phoenix and one of the clerks went out of his way to let me know he canít sell to California residents. He either saw my license plate or read the back of my work shirt. I never even touched the ammo, just looked at it. Slim Pickens, too.

Come on

Load up 6 carts
$15,000 worth of Ammo

Let them ring it up

Then realize you forgot your wallet

Make the cool story cool

Are you suggesting they donít make panic buying ammo flippers in AZ?

Like I said, it was slim pickens.

If they had 30-30 in stock Iíd have come back with a fake mustache and a different shirt on and parked around the corner.

I've never been asked for ID to buy ammo in Az so it sounds like its a shop thing. Most places still limit the number of boxes you can buy a day, but there is a decent supply at most places. Personally, I think feeding the resistance behind enemy lines is a good thing, but maybe some shops are trying to ensure their regular customers are taken care of?

For me the issue ar15Robert brings up is a very valid one. If I visit Cal, I cannot buy ammo unless I apply for and receive a COE first.

Their regular customers are (presumably) Americans just like those who are not regulars. There is no law in Arizona that prevents California residents from purchasing ammunition in Arizona. There is a law in California that prevents Arizona residents from purchasing ammunition in California. Any shop that refuses to sell to Californians despite there being no law preventing such sales are just being pricks.

Itís definitely a shop thing, I started to question why and the guy started rambling about Federal law and transporting across state lines. Thatís when I knew the discussion wasnít going to go anywhere. I think theyíre either spiteful or worried about getting crossed up with CADOJ or trying to save their meager stock for locals. Funny thing is, the big 5 down the street had a great selection.

I think my point was missed.
He isn't buying in ca for MANY reasons, then had one small speed bump in az, and that is his concern.
Compare that shopping experience to an az resident shopping in ca and you will find the same issue.

Just as you did OP, go to the next shop and give them your money if they want it.

I had no intention of buying any ammo, nor did I. It wasn’t a speed bump, just an anecdote. It’s fun to see what gun shops in other states have to offer. FWIW, I do buy ammo in California whenever I see something in stock that’s worth picking up. I keep my passport with me at all times, just for this reason.

One positive thing I can tell you, is there were a few other people in there besides me and there were enough people behind the counters to give everyone service and also let me know that they weren’t going to be selling me any ammo. Nobody was taking numbers and standing there tapping their toes.

On a sidenote, how are nonresident hunters supposed to get ammo in the CA if they cannot purchase it or import it?

EDIT:

I didn’t realize non residents are able to import ammo by the truckload, at least according to this website:

https://calwaterfowl.org/navigating-...check-systemHi

Quote:
Are you a non-resident? Here's a fun fact: There is literally no way for non-residents to buy ammunition in California under this law; however, non-residents are NOT subject to the import requirements, so they can bring in as much as they want. If you're flying, you can't bring much – check your airline for its limits. If you're flying out for a hunting trip, hunters can share ammunition in the field.

You can bring in your own ammo for hunting as an out of state resident. Has to be ca legal hunting ammo, but you can bring it.

I ran into the same issue pre covid when I found some Barnes copper hollow point 10mm in Henderson NV. I also had a vortex razor that they had opened the locked case and spent 1/2 hour answering questions and showed me a few others. When I showed them my ID for CC their tone changed. I spoke to the owners wife or manager and they continued the same line of BS. They said they can sell me the scope and I intentionally laughed at them and laughed some more as I walked out the door, not thrilled. I then went to ode time and told all the fellows, who spread the word in the neighborhood. Spurlocks was their name. I have no shame calling them or any other company who’s policy I don’t like. There is a new gun store called bear arms. They get my money now and everyone else in the neighborhood when I’m in town.

I was in Walmart in Prescott Valley Az. a few days ago. Bought three 350 round boxes of 22 as well as a box of .410 shells.

The clerk just asked for my DOB...

Great deal on the ammo too.

If I had a box of ammo for every time a LGS employee was wrong about something...well I'd probably have ATF at my door wondering why I had so damn much ammo.

Well, I'll be danged. Was in Flagstaff six months ago for an industry expo, later we stopped at a little gun store, great staff, good convo, staff became aware I was from California and expressed their sympathy, was shown various commercial ammunition loads (always like to see if anyone carries stuff like Buffalo Bore "Heavy" .44 Special +P an' stuff like that), passed on the pricing because I was well-stocked for the journey. I even brought what was left of my own ammo home (shhhhh!).

What store?…..I’ll be sure to never go in there. Either way, they don’t likely have that good of prices. You can go to Prescott or perhaps Phoenix to get better deals.

Hvac related, but, most wholesalers, wont sell many items these days, unless you are REALLY a regular customer with them. Copper line sets as an example, wont be sold to you unless you are a dealer. We are commercial, so the whole "dealer" thing doesn't fit us.

Occasional residential job? Forgettabouttit.

Every company is protecting their own customers, which i totally respect.
Odk how this analogy fits into ammo, bit not suprising.

HVAC shops have always been stingy about who they sell to. Every one Iíve tried to purchase from wonít sell to anyone without a contractor's license.
