That Ishapore is tempting but at $530 maybe a little spendy for one. Shipping is $15. Transfer + DROS would be another $50-$65 for me. And then add on some tax $$$ If it weren't for that extra transfer fee hassle I might be in for one, or if I knew they were in really nice shape. I'd like to see more pics.

Will they let you get an Ishapore 2A1 in CA with the magazine or do they keep it?

I thought they are all 10 rounders that you can cram 12 into.

I have an Ishapore coming.

Why do I want one of those MAS 49/56 so bad??!!

Looks like it has a front launcher sight, so I am assuming this is a no-go in CA without removing the muzzle device/launcher?

Either you have the ammo, or just because they are cool

I do have the ammo - I have a MAS 1936 Bolt action. Always wanted one of these to go with it. And it does look pretty cool

Had one some years back when Century was "converting" them to 7.62 Nato, the 7.5 ammo wasn't available just about anywhere.
Took it to the range, multiple FTF, FTE and the corker was the out of battery discharge that drove the op rod handle into the palm of my hand. Solid black and blue round area for a month. Sent it back for a refund.
Some time later the 7.5 ammo became available, and now I can have one but it would mean another caliber I'd have to stock which ain't going to happen.

And yes it has a standard square bottom 12 round magazine, not a "10 rounder" to you can squeeze 12 into. I also bought the 10 rounder from Brownells years ago when the mags laws changed in CA, but never used it.

Finally got the Ishapore, looks pretty nice. Some dings in the stock but no cracks. Bore is clean, sharp rifling. Small import mark "C.A.I. ST. ALB. VT."

Very nice. My 1891 was priced right for its condition which is not great. But it will give me something to do when I have time.

Congrats very nice!

The one I've had fer 20 years has "chunky" looking stoving on the metal and magazine. Often debated stripping it to see what is underneath. Did that some years back with another Enfield and found it was blued under the stoving!

Correct, all Enfields were blued then painted with Suncorite to further protect them from the elements.

I just picked up a nice mas 49/56. It had a muzzle brake on the front end, much wider than the stock flash hider.

A couple interesting things I noticed.

There are countless stories about the mas failure to extract. There are also a lot of explanation as to why the gun doesn't cycle well in 308. I did a chamber cast and learned a great deal.

First, the chamber walls are pristine. No reamer chatter, etc. what is apparent is the chamber is very tight, as in on the minimum range for a 308 case. Like a pilot reamemer hand job on a match rifle. Probably not optimal for a semi. And probably why chamber polishing is sometimes credited with helping the gun cycle. The polishing no doubt is widening the chamber enough to alleviate the tight fit. I'll use a small base 308 resizing due to see how that affects cycling over normally sized cases.

I also machined a new gas valve. While this too is credited with preventing fte's and ripped off case rims I will test that theory.

My recoil spring is a good 3" shorter than stock. No doubt that makes the extraction issues worse and also would sorely hurt bolt rebound to feed a tight chamber.

As to the theory 308 is much hotter than 7.5 French and over gassed the gun....a quick study of loads in quick load shows just the opposite. 7.5 has a bigger internal volume and can be loaded just as hot, or hotter, than 308.

There's a lot of things to test and maybe a few urban myths to be waylaid as I try to see why things do or don't work. I'll begin testing next week.

Most of your initial .308 converted MAS 49/56 observations have been known and sorted out for a while. The shortened recoil spring is a known issue, time to order a replacement. The myth about .308 being a significanty higher pressure has been debunked, get on Gunboards if you haven’t already. The gas valve can help counter the weak recoil spring but is only a band aid - where it shines and what most seem to use it for is being able to adjust the gas such that the brass doesn’t fly away anymore.

So what was the real cause of the bad extractions? A weak extractor? If cases are being ripped off it's a timing issue or a over tight chamber. I can't even get a 308 case to drop into my guns chamber. That's not right.

. I read all the post on gunboards. People blame bad chamber finishes and over gassing. To me the issue looks like a very tight reamer job, not a bad finish or over gassing. But I need an excuse to go to the range so this is a great one.

The new spring is installed. Waiting for a firing pin and the creek to go back down.

The hammer spring on the gun is also incredibly strong. The strongest one I've ever felt. No wonder it pierces primers.

These are the intricacies of the 7.62 converted 49/56. I have one that now functions perfectly, thanks to the good folks on gunboards. Starmetal, a member on there, makes and sells an adjustable gas valve if you don't have the ability to make one. They also recommend buying an original-length recoil spring, because like you mentioned, century cut them down hoping to make it work better(not!).

Murray's sells a spring-loaded firing pin that will prevent you from having slamfires. And last but not least, i can testify to how tight the chambers are. When trying my .308 handloads, i had a bunch that just wouldn't quite chamber all the way, preventing the rifles from fully going into battery. If i pulled the mag and let the bolt run forward again most would chamber but feeding from the mag it just wouldn't quite do it. These were full-length resized cases that had been fired in my brother's FAL. I've since purchased and used a small-base resize die, just haven't had a chance to get out and test.
