Question Where to train in LA?

Hi,

I am looking to get some instructions to become a better shooter, eventually I would like to try out some pistol and 3-gun competitions.

Any suggestions in the South Bay/ LA region?

Thank you!

I think the OP is referring to "intro to IDPA/IPSC or 3 Gun" type classes...

OP said (1) he wanted to become a better shooter and (2) eventually going into competition. I read the latter being predicated upon the former, and how else to become a better shooter than to build and develop the fundamentals? I would believe that the top picks of the schools listed here can provide the OP the opportunities to do so...

That said, how would you know that some of these schools don't cater to the action shooting crowd? I, for one, know a couple do provide instruction specific to competition. Moreso, what is competition anyway, at least for IDPA, USPSA and 3-Gun? Isn't simply the application of fundamentals? Marksmanship, gun handling, moving, drawing a holster, shooting from cover/concealment, shooting from awkward positions, etc?

These guys put on a great beginner/intermediate program for action pistol type sports like IDPA & USPSA.

Work on sight alignment and trigger control by dry firing.

If you do this for 15 to 20 mins everyday for 3 months, you are going to be in better shape than the other shooters because you have the basics.

You can do this at home and its really cheap.

I would recommend that you take good solid tactical pistol courses and learn how to "fight" with your gun before you start to focus on playing a "game" with the gun. Good tactical classes will correctly teach you the fundamentals of combat shooting so that you can continue to train until they are subconscious muscle memory. THEN add the complexity of competitive stage problem solving when you dont have to consciously think about safely manipulating your weapon and moving with it.

You may not like competition shooting and may eventually stop competing but the basics of how to fight with your gun will remain valuable and useful all your life.

Once you get those tactical classes done and have some good manipulation and safe movement beginning to form muscle memory. Then start shooting some IDPA ( https://www.idpa.com/ ) matches to ease yourself into the dynamic and stressful environment of competition. Once you start doing well there and are mastering that... move on to USPSA (https://uspsa.org/) if you really want to get into the high round count fast moving game...

This approach has worked VERY well for several new shooters I have coached / mentored.

I can recommend;

Direct Action Group teaching up at Burro Canyon: https://dag-usa.com/
Gunsite Academy outside Prescott Arizona: https://www.gunsite.com/

No matter who you go with... make sure you check out the credentials / resumes of who you are paying to teach you.... Any school who does not provide detailed professional backgrounds on its staff should be avoided like the plague.

Direct Action Group: https://dag-usa.com/intel-2/cadre/
Gunsite: https://www.gunsite.com/firearms-instructors/

Thank you for all the feedback, this is a great way to do some research and start learning.

And yes I want to become a better shooter before I start competing.
Direct Action Group looked great, but unfortunately I will be out of the country when they have level 1 and 2 for handguns... hopefully next year...
but you guys gave me a lot of choices so time to do a little research

Thanks again!

Those are the "basics" of "sight alignment and trigger control" only. While they are the two most important basics to achieve accuracy with a handgun, they are not the only two " basics/fundamentals" needed to be competent with a handgun, much less safe and competent in an IDPA/USPSA competition and even less so in a tactical situation / gun fight. I won't even comment on the 3 gun competition issue as competence with a handgun has little to do with competence with a rifle or shotgun.

Mastering trigger control and sight alignment only prepare you for stationary shooting in a square range environment assuming you learn Coopers safety basics.

PS: You can never do enough "Correct" dry fire practice!
