Ive had a situation only once in my 22 years as a civilian where a gun was drawn. When law enforcement showed up I placed my weapon on the ground, stepped back with my arms raised and told them I was the individual who called them. Funny enough the responding officer told me to " holster that weapon so you dont scratch it up on the concrete" while he was holding a weapon at the person of interest. |

If it is a mass shooting or other kind of spree, then its likely that the guy doing the actual shooting when LE shows up is the bad guy. While the possibility of you returning fire at the time LE show up on scene, it is probably a lot less than the possibility of the bad guy popping off rounds when they show up.
Plus if you are seen trying to aid/help/direct people, even with a gun in your hand and hopefully at low ready, I'd like to hope that you are taken as a good guy (or less of a bad guy) and not immediately fired upon by LE. Your general actions and behavior are also good indicators. From what little info I have seen and security/police videos of the assaults, the bad guy is often roaming not really utilizing tactics of cover and concealment, securing the weapon, etc.. And if the people are running towards you at the same time LE arrives, that should be a good indicator of you not the threat. I realize this is a lot of idealization but you need to start somewhere. |

Also, if LEO’s are anywhere near me I WOULD NOT draw, I’ll let the pros handle it from there. My friends who have been in active shooter drills say they shoot each other up and they’re uniformed. Number one priority is me and mine not getting shot.

Come on, It's not like LEO's ever shoot the good guys.
Actually that reminds me. When I was young I worked at a body shop. The Local LEO would do "Training" by driving around downtown with their lights off playing Spotlight tag. Repairing self inflicted body damage to their cars was a constant boost to our bottom line.

There is no magic solution to this problem. Deal with the threat. Then get your weapon re-holstered as quickly as you can once it's safe to do so. The rest of the time, expect to be a target to any other CCW holders trying to figure out who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, and any police officer.
BTW...You will also have the exact same problem. That guy running up with his gun drawn...is he another CCW holder coming to help or is he the bad guy's accomplice? It goes without saying that these things can be very messy, very confusing, and very dangerous. May the odds be ever in your favor.
