Air travelling requirements
I remember reading a good thread on the subject, but can't find it. Please link me to it, or just post here.
I know unloaded and locked... Will this box do? Do I need a separate box for the ammo? Last edited by northridgegun; 11-14-2018 at 7:27 AM.. |

I've used this website as a reference and not had an issue flying with firearms.
Packing and the Friendly Skies That case looks like the Gunvault Nano vault which is FAA approved as a hard sided container that locks. Ammo can't be stored loose e.g. rolling around, but typically what raises the least eyebrows is factory boxes that keep the rounds from touching each other.

Some airlines go beyond the federal requirements and require, as a matter of airline policy that ammunition be in factory packaging. American Airlines used to have such a policy, but now allows small quantities of ammunition in other secure packaging.

I always recommend checking with TSA and your airline (policies usually available online) before flying.
TSA is easy. Go to this website: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transport...and-ammunition Airlines are a bit different because every airline has different policies. Also, keep in mind that airline policies change. I once flew the same airline round trip, but the policy changed while I was on my trip. I had to follow the new policies on my way home. I always recommend checking the policies before each segment of your flight. Also, factor in the gun laws of any state to which and/or through which you may be travelling. Be especially careful if you are going through New York, New Jersey, or Hawaii. If you travel often, consider obtaining the Utah, Florida, and Arizona CCWs. If you have a California permit in addition to those, you would be allowed to carry in 37 states. California, Utah, and Florida actually give you the 37 states, but I always recommend Arizona as well because reciprocity is subject to change with little to no notice.

When I travel with a handgun, I put the gun in a small Pelican case that has the foam fitting for my gun. And, I put a box of ammo in a separate small Pelican case. I have never had a problem.
I declared at the ticketing counter, TSA inspected them, had me lock them, and I checked in the luggage. |

I used an Apache box from Harbor Freight.

That’s how I pack. I didn’t unload the Shield mags before I took the photo. They go in the box. Case is hard plastic and locked with two Master locks. I keep a key and my wife keeps one. Holsters go in a luggage or my carryon backpack. I declare at checkin. They make me sign a form. They slap the form on the gun case and send me on my way. I’ve never had an issue with TSA or the airlines. YMMV.

Check with your airline on their website. It’s 11 lbs (5 kilograms) for Southwest and American.
American stipulates that: Quote:

Alaska Air allows up to 50 lbs. on certain routes. 11 lbs. on international and selected routes.

The case should work. But try to find a way to cable lock it into the interior of your suitcase. The problem with small cases like this, however, is that they are very easy to grab and hide by a crooked baggage monkey. So to whatever extent you can secure it to the rest of your case, it might help.

IMO I would strongly recommend getting a keyed case and not using a combination lock. I have traveled extensively with a pistol and normally use a stack on keyed case. It allows you to cable lock the case into your suitcase to prevent easy theft. I normally am packing my 'vacation' gun, my back up off duty: a S&W 438, Ruger LC9S, or SIG P365 and one or two extra loaded magazines all together in the case. I've only had one desk agent even mildly interested in it. I then hand carry them to TSA for their inspection and they deliver to baggage. Put your declaration form in the suitcase and do not allow any 'gun inside' stickers. A Hawaiian baggage agent started asking all kinds of questions, turned out to be a firearms enthusiast and we chatted for 5 minutes about guns.

Just be careful with the loaded magazines. Some airlines say no. American is one of them. I linked their policies above.

I don’t ever keep the mags loaded. I put the rounds in the box. I didn’t take the ammo out of the Shield mags before I took that picture.

That is true about Southwest. I fly them a lot. Don't know about Alaska. I usually fly Southwest or American so I am fairly familiar with their policies...

Do go read their policy. It is a little weird with the magazines. The magazines can be loaded only if they are in an area of the case designed to hold magazines. If the magazines are loose, they cannot be loaded.

Just got back from a trip from ONT to PDX through Southwest. Followed the rules and it was super easy, no stress.
Used a container like the OP used, stored unloaded with slide locked open, no mag in container. Two unloaded mags in a ziplock in the suitcase, and two boxes of ammo in ziplocks in the suitcase. Declared at the counter, super professional and they didn't blink an eye, filled out the form, waited 10 minutes and TSA did not summon me. Boarded and arrived at my destination, everything intact. Love Southwest, love Ontario airport. Done this twice so far and both times smooooooth. |

I have recently flown SW,in fact today, with Pelican case with foam intact with Sig P238 unloaded & slide closed with loaded magazines separate next to Sig no problems. Flew a couple of weeks ago & had 1 loose round that they did not like so pushed it into full mag so it was partialy confined & gtg. Flew Alaska to & from Montana the 12 & 19 of November the same way no problems.
Good to know about American, thanks. |
