Default Orange County Renewal - See Post # 16

Anyone done a renewal at OC recently? Wondering how far out in advance to get the ball rolling (expires 4/16). Are they treating renewals the same as new applicants with regard to wait times? Used to be submitting application/supporting materials within 45 days would still allow for processing, training, etc., but now not so sure.

When I went through my initial application and issuance, ending February this year, they advised a 90 day renewal process, and cautioned that no reminder will be sent. This was while "self defense" was in full swing, just before the reversal of Peruta.

Yeah, back in the day it was 45 days. They're now saying 90...likely because of the increased volume of applicants to deal with. We don't get LiveSanned again, so my guess is that we'll see our new card well before the 90 is up.

Does anyone know if the refresher class must be done within that "90 day" period or can it be completed anytime prior?

Initial training was good for 6 months from completion.
Does anyone have information in writing if the same is true of the 4 hour renewal training?
Thanks!

Per Yolanda, it needs to be done within a couple of months of renewal.

With the first wave all renewing at once it will be busy. Since only four hours is needed, instructors will probably be cranking out more than one class a day if need be.

I don't think the 4 hours includes the range time, AFAIK.

Doheny,

Can you provide the link for your post #9. Thanks!

It makes it MUCH EASIER if we can just email everything versus appointment.

It's the real deal. I just got it from Yolanda. It's a Word doc so I'm not sure how to post it or provide a link so I cut and pasted.

Not really a reason to rush training as there are enough trainers available that it's not hard to get a class.

The hardest thing for some, and the area of concern will be going form SD to GC.

Just for discussion sake, is there an inclination for OCSD to more easily renew
permits to existing CCW holders who have stayed out of trouble for the two years they had their first permit?

I have GC ready but just used self defense the first go around.

You'll still need a GC other than SD.

We haven't heard of people getting denied, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I hope everyone keeps the forum posted about how renewals go. My concern is that they green light people now and then down the road decide not to, I suppose it's unlikely though so long as nothing changes with the applicant.

People are constantly getting renewed; we haven't heard of anyone not getting a renewal. There's no reason a current holder won't be renewed unless they just can't articulate a good cause.

Good question, my guess is no interview or residency check. Livescan? Maybe.

No LiveScan. Once you get LiveScanned the first time they are notified of any subsequent arrests you're involved in.

There's another site that thinks it's a big deal, but I don't, personally. If someone wants to tell you either in the thread or via PM, great. If not, that's understandable too.

There used to be a train of thought that your GC was unique and if anyone else had one similar something was amiss. That's really not the case now with the sheriff issuing more liberally. Plus, if a GC is good enough for one person, there is no reason it shouldn't be good enough for someone else.

With that said, I'm not saying we should all use the same good cause. OCSD can still ask for proof or additional verification if they want to. It's just that giving a person an ideal what you used could help him form his or give him ideals that will work for him.

I'm just curious as to what constitutes "good enough" or what doesn't work for supplemental good cause.

Literally, anything. Just articulate why you need a CCW. It really isn't hard. A few sentences is good enough.

Sent from my phone via Tapatalk, plea excuse the errors.

This.

Walk your dog at night or in the outback and worried about two or four legged creatures? Travel to remote places where LE response is slow? Concerned about increase in crime and violent attacks?

They want more than just the two words they were accepting before (self defense/personal defense.) If you can scratch out a few sentences for a couple of reasons you'll be good.

Should supporting paperwork still be included with a short reason for self defense? Like including timesheets for late night shifts?

I wouldn't worry about it unless they asked...no reason to muddy the waters. Supporting paperwork is usually asked for when people say they make large deposits or they carry at/because of work.
