Default The Fix 6.5 Creedmoor

Got a Fix by Q in 6.5cm coming next week. New to LR shooting. Atlas V8 bipod on standby, having difficulty finding Q-sert direct mounts. Need advice on optics, $1500-$2000 range. FFP and mil dot preferred. I have my eye on the Eotech Vudu 5-25x50 mainly due to its size but I'm getting mixed reviews. Planning to shoot from 500-700 yards and work up, doubt I'll even try past 1000 yards. Any other advice for a beginner LR shooter would be much appreciated. Thank you all.

Night Force NX8 4-32 Mil XT reticle. I’m new to long range and have a range close to me that goes out to 2k. You can find good info on here, but also jump on Snipers Hide forum. Check their px you can find good deals on optics.

1. Nightforce.
2. Nightforce.
3. Athlon
4. Vortex Razor
5. Burris or Bushnell

For my competition rifle, I run a Nighforce BEAST. Love that scope. Tough as hell.

Noted. That NF sounds good. Dont know if i'll need all that magnification but considering the price and the NF name, i might just jump on that. Made a snipers hide account too. Thank you

rex chats a lot or maybe too much on the PC its easy to skip ahead...

there is nothing as deflating to me as buying something and then realizing I picked up the wrong gear...

Attend a PRS match- normally some really like minded people... a wide variety of gear.. people are normally very open to questions- what scope did you have before this one? why did you the prior scope?
What bag are you running? etc

buying correctly once is a great feeling...

knowing why you are hitting and knowing why your missing is a great thing...

I don’t need it either, I was shooting at 1150 with an 18” 6.5 cm making hits and never went above 12X. It’s always nice having the extra power for observation purposes. I have the tremor 3 reticle and wish I would have went with the Mil XT. Also StrelokPro app is a good purchase.

Thanks for your input everyone, I really do appreciate it. I got a good deal from another calgunner on a eotech vudu 3.5-18x50 so that's that. Now let's talk mounts; stuck between the scalarworks LEAP, geissele super precision, the adm recon or maybe the bobro standard precision mount. I like the scalarworks for the weight and leveling device built into it. I have experience with the geissele sp mounts, running one on a radian mod1 right now, like it a lot. I keep hearing about how amazing the adm recon is at keeping zero after being unmounted. I would prefer a QD system and i will be removing the mount/optic often as i travel with the rig. If anyone has experience with any of these mounts, i'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks again

i have the ADM quick detach mount....it's worked out well for me and i'm not disapointed in the mount however, were i to do it over i'm not sure the quick detach function is all that worthwhile.

I say this because prior to shooting i like to confirm that the base nuts are properly torqued...so from a practical perspective a standard single unit fixed mount ends up working the same and costing less.

Regardless of the system you ultimately choose, i like to mark with a drop of paint the forward and rearward extent of where the mount locates on the picatinny rail so it's quick/easy and repeatable.

glad you didn't end up with mil-dots.....not a big fan, i understand some prefer it for a hunting platform using commercial ammunition but for long range shooting where one might often alter loads it can in my experience prove to be a bit challenging

don't forget a good shooting bag

For that money get a used Night Force, you can find a bunch on the Hide for sale.

As for tips? What are you looking for?

If you only shooting out to 700 maybe further later, no reason to break the bank. Athlon, burris and vortex. Spend 5 to 800 and save the rest for whatever else you want. Expensive doesnt always mean best. Hell you think Atlas spends more then $50 making thier bipod. Good gear is nice and it's ok the splurge but you really dont have to.

I got a eotech vudu 3.5-18x50 FFP from another calgunner and i also ordered a NF ATACR 5-25x56 SFP for hunting. Bipod is an atlas v8 bt10, pretty familiar w those, just cant mount it yet bc finding the direct mount for the Q rifle is hard but i backordered it through Q, dont know when i'll get it. Those sniper 101 rex videos from like 8 years ago that were mentioned above are actually perfect and answer all my questions, im on part 18. Will shoot bench and prone first and eventually get a tripod. Wont hunt with this rig until next year. Didnt realize how complex LR shooting was until watching those yt videos.

I'd sell one of those scopes and use what you practice with. It is all new , but will become second nature. I hardly dial anymore when shooting so FFP for me. With bipod mount get a Harris just as good as Atlas. How's the accuracy and action on the Q, I haven't heard good reviews which steered me away. Tripod for hunting is crucial if you hunt with a spotting scope. I throw my rifle on it and go to town!

Pretty sure im sold on the adm recon mounts. The rifle's already very light, about 6.5lbs unloaded, can afford a little extra weight on accessories. Total weight with a loaded 5 round mag, optic/mount and bipod will be around 10lbs, which im happy with. Main reason i care for QD is because i will be swapping/removing the optics often, otherwise i agree w what you said. Ty

Picking up the rifle next week, got it thru a gunbroker auction. The atlas bipod i've had for a while, run it on some other guns too. Really like the build quality and how sturdy they are.

I'm curious what kind of velocity you will get with the standard 6.5 Creed loads out of the short barrel.

The ballistics data for the 6.5 Creedmoor is usually based on 24" barrels so you are going to lose 300 - 400 fps with the shorter barrel. This will increase the drop and wind deflection at 1,000 yards to 308 Win level performance, negating all the advantages of the Creed except for the reduced recoil.

Still havent had a chance to take this thing out. Will update. Bidding on a 24" proof carbon barrel as we speak.

Shooting factory Hornady match 147’s out of an 18” Tikka I was getting 2522 FPS.

Side note, I have a 26” Proof CF blank if you’re interested.

That's less than 200 fps under slower than the factory loads but you may be loading to higher pressures. You also have 2" more barrel than the OP's rifle so he'll lose a little more. At standard temperature and pressure, you're looking at 34 minutes of drop at 1,000 yards and 7 minutes with a 10 mph wind.

I've seen where a guy replaced a factory Tikka barrel with a high quality hand-lapped one that was the same length and picked up over 100 fps.
