I'm not retired. Too busy working to reload ammo. Thats why I stick to common cheap calibers.

I hand load . Started out as a need , 6.5x257 , then 218 Bee , try affording that . Then just because I had the press I got die sets for everything I shoot , even the little 22 rf because someone said it can't be done .

Then the casting began , down the rabbit hole I went .

I recall when the price of primers tripled because of hoarding after 2008 election. Primer prices never came back down like they have for 22LR.

Yes, I handload for my milsurp handguns. Commercial cowboy loads are ridiculously priced, you can pay for a hand press pretty quick by loading your own. Here are some powder-puff 38SPC, the first handloads I ever did.

I haven't reloaded in about 5 years. Costs of primers and powder have gone up while low cost ammo has gone down.

I still save the brass and intend to reload the odd-ball calibers like 350 Legend and Grendel. I'll sell off the 9mm cases and most of the .223.

Requires more space, equipment and knowledge that I have or care to acquire. Also you don't save that much (if any) money anymore handloading. There's also much greater peace of mind (for me) in buying manufactured ammo than risk loading ammo myself.

The only "good" reason to do it IMO is if you are a competitive shooter (handguns or rifles) and want to load your ammo in a specific way to meet your needs but I am not a competitive shooter and really don't care if each load/case is exactly the same so that I can measure the accuracy of my shooting. But there are many that are and do care about such things and for them handloading is the only way to go.

Of course you save ammo, I cast and load for the beo,4570, 458, 45acp and I could save anywhere from 25cents on a 45 to $1 on the beo. When you add that all up after a day at the range that's close to a $100 in savings each trip.

Reloading is the only way to go for me.

Last time I tried to buy some ammo I was told I would have to bring in my birth certificate. I refuse to comply.

I recently renewed my license but did not get a Real ID, so my new DL specifically states "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" on it. Apparently this is a deal breaker unless I show proof of birth in the US.

Honestly I'm not concerned about it, I kept UPS busy in 2018.

I only shoot reloads right now anyway. My loading season stops between June and November, so I'll keep cranking 'em out for another three months.

The only store bought ammo I've shot (besides rimfire) in the last year has been to diagnose a problem with one of my guns recently.

Been doing it for 25 years, I don’t do it to save money. I do it so I can shoot three times as much with the money I spend.

with the exception of .22, and one box of .45ACP that I got to "test" a new 1911 with, I have not shot factory in 30+ years. I even handloaded .22 once just to see how to do it. I reload/handload 6 different calibers and yes, even 9mm I reload. Oh, I also cast my own bullets sometimes just to do it. So yeah, I handload.

P.S. I did buy 2 boxes of those .45ACP rounds, one box I put through the gun, the other box became my HD ammo and still not shot it.

I have been reloading since 1980. It allows me to tailor a particular load to an individual firearm, and in a few cases has allowed me to create one or two custom loads that give me the results I want for a number of firearms of the same caliber. For specific large calibers I load, like .375 H&H, it is vastly more cost effective to load my own rather than purchase factory ammunition. That particular rifle has never had a factory round through it. When I take it hunting I get the satisfaction of knowing I assembled the best ammunition possible for that particular rifle, and the type of game I am hunting.

Havnt started myself yet,the motivation for me is trying to find .44 special in STOCK and the fact it is almost as much as .44 mag so I will do both and do other calibers as I go along learning.

Been reloading since 1977. Why pay more for ammo?

I’ve only ever hand-loaded 7x57 and 7.62x54r, as it’s hard to find reasonably priced consistent and accurate brass cased ammo for these rounds. I actually just bought a .17 hornet so I did an initial purchase of 150 commercially loaded rounds now I’ll get some dies and reuse the brass after I shoot it up.

Other than a few bricks of 22s during the shortage a few years back, I haven't purchased ammo in 20 years...anyone who says not cheaper than shelf ammo does not reload. What I really like is the fact that I'm not tied down to any caliber of gun because of ammo. I have dies for most anything.

Not worth it for me. I would need a fully automated press. I only shoot common cartridges and get it at wholesale. The time lost handloading would be a money loser.

Love reloading for wheelguns. And loading 38, 357, and 45 ACP is easier and wayyyyyy cheaper than factory.

I reload for all long guns basically everything that I hunt with and compete with except 22lr.

I've probably bought five boxes of rifle ammunition in the last 15-20 years and that was mostly when I saw someone selling 375 ammo for cheap prices and one box of 30/40 Krag to get brass for a new rifle.
