Where is a good place to get started?
I am a Former Marine RO 2531/0621 so I know some of the basics in regards to radio stuff. My longest shot was from Southern Thialand to Okinawa using a MRC-138 (Vehicle Mounted 400 watt HF radio), not counting satelite work. Mostly looking for handheld and vehicle comms right now. I have read the entire thread, maybe I am dense.

Two weeks ago i was camping in Arizona. I used a mere 5 WATTS (known as "QRP" in ham radio world) to talk to a guy down in Tasmania. I regularly talk all across north america and south america with 50 watts or less. That's very typical, especially when propagation (atmospheric conditions) are good. There are many "QRPers" in ham radio. We love to use minimal power with crude antennas. Check out http://www.qrz.com to learn everything there is about ham radio.

KI6QOH
Ft-7800 mobile GE MVS/OT2m/Nuvi350 (APRS) Alinco DR-605 for the shack Kenwood 2m mobile that I use for events/digital stuff FT-60R HT Wish List: FT-857/897 or I might settle for an FT-450, but I would like the all-mode 2m/440 in the 8x7s. Member (BOD for another month) K6ARP (http://www.k6arp.org) I generally hang out on the club repeater system while mobile and operate 1st/3rd Thursday night net as Net Control. Our high level repeater (2m/220/440) has generator backup and are up around 4600'. 2m covers from south of Stockton almost to Bakersfield. It plays well across the valley (fades out around Newman on the I-5 corridor to the north and works at least from Kettleman City to the south.) Farthest I've hit it was from Black Mountain over near Santa Margarita (mountain top to mountain top, hardly a struggle at 20watts). Low level repeater (440) in Clovis has IRLP (8280), Echolink and autopatch with 440 link up the hill. I've worked a few community events. Never made a contact on HF. Worked one contest (June '10 VHF/UHF from CM95). Done a few local t-hunts (nothing like the So-Cal stuff). A friend from a Linux group got me into radio when he was talking about APRS. I'm a No-Code General class Appliance Operator. |

I usually head up to River Park area (Blackstone and Nees, kinda) about once a week or so. I was up that way on Sunday to a shop. Picked up a carry case, ear muffs and cleaning kit. Did you get my second reply to -10? There's a short cut to reply with the Nuvi/OT2m but I'm not sure I did it right. -9 is my mobile setup. I've got APRSDroid on the phone and I think it's -11, but I'm not sure. I used to run an iGate up here but the MVS blew the control fuse on the board. It's been fixed by a friend and just haven't been in a hurry to get it back. |

Well, it looks like I will get used to getting disappointed then, I already bought the 817. I took the advice from a friend who has one and he told me that it was THE radio to get. I just figured he knew what he was talking about.

if you are an outdoors type of guy who goes camping, that would be a great radio. its made for that kind of use.
I got the 857d because its almost the same, its small portable but can be used as a base station too. if you cant return it, sell it, i might know a buyer.

I have decided to sell this radio. It is just like new with the box and all paperwork. I only charged the batteries and turned it on to listen to it. It is in perfect shape. I will put it up for sale in the marketplace.

I've heard good things on a local repeater about these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/WOUXUN-KG-UVD1P-...item27b8cc6b7b They said the menus are hard to use, the manual is terrible, but the audio is clear and loud. |

For you old time hams... check this out:
http://www.ae7q.com/ It will tell you your original application date. Quote:
Based on the fact that kd6daa was issued on 11-19-1991 and kd6dzz was issued on 12-17-1991, you would have had to be originally licensed within that month. P.S. 42 this year huh?? You got your license a little early...in 1991 you would have been 32... I got my ticket in 1991 too and it was mostly old men then.

Passed my Tech on Sunday. Took the General and failed so time to open the general book and study for that one next. Figure I will be ready for it in a few months. Time to start buying equipment and getting on the air. Looking at the Yaesu FT-857d or 897d for mobile/base station and the 8R for handheld.

Just got my Tech license last month.
I got one of those new Wouxun HT. Still trying to figure it out and program in the frequencies. No base unit yet. That is next on the list. Between guns, photography, and radios I'm going broke real real fast. |
