Default Dating a S&W revolver

Received a S&W in 32 WCF (.32-30), with serial number 66XXX. The number on the yoke is different.

I haven't found a master list for old S&W revolvers. Can someone give me an idea of the year of manufacture?

AFAIK...

For S&W revolvers the official serial number is located on the butt of the frame or on the front of the grip frame.

The number in the yoke area may be the model designation for the revolver or a factory part assembly control number.

Numbers/letters marked at other locations on the revolver may be third party control/rack numbers.

The S&W Foundation is the official S&W source for obtaining a S&W made firearms history.
S&W Historical Foundation: serial number letter request

I believe S&W stopped making revolvers chambered in .32WCF aka .32-20 Winchester in 1940.

the serial number will also be found on the cylinder face and barrel flat, underneath the ejector rod.

if the s/n you've provided is correct it's a 32-20 Hand Ejector Model of 1905, 4th change. starting 65701 in 1915, ending 144684 in 1940.

you'd need a letter to pin down the actual ship date.

That puts it close enough for me. Where did you get that information, BTW?

Next question: I'm seeing .32-20 ammo online. This: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.32-20...-20--32ACP.JPG

Is this the correct for ammo for this handgun?

One thing I have noticed over the years is that older .32-20 revolvers quite often have bulged barrels. When you run your fingers up the barrel, the bulge is quite easy to feel, mostly is is right behind the front sight. I have also noticed it occasionally on .38 Special revolvers too.

yes, the taller round in the pic is 32-20. correct for guns marked ".32 WCF".

the info I provided did come from my copy of the Standard Catalog; it's an older edition. at one time I considered myself a serious S&W collector.

This,

with a good set of pictures you will find out more than you ever wanted to know.

Probably just by searching .32/.20.

32/20's were run on M&P frames and serialized separately as I recall.
