Still possible, but you may be a bit late. The halcyon days of $99 Mosins and $99 spam cans seem to have faded into the sunset. The only thing better than cheap milsurps is cheap surplus to feed them.
I would love to be wrong about that. |

There was a Hungarian M95 recently in the marketplace for about that.
I’ve got an Austrian one kinda fun rifle. In the end the cost of the Ammo will outweigh the savings on the rifle though. Around $30 per box. But as far as cheap C&R rifle go it’s a quality made one. |

One needs to know handloading if he is serious about shooting c&r. There are still old guns out there at this price. But they are often in bad shape and sporterized. I sometimes pick those up to work on. Restoring such pieces back to their original configurations and making them accurate is the satisfaction that I enjoy the most. All matching collectables in pristine condition are not my thing.
I bought a lot of 3 beaters off GunBroker for $200. A smle, an arisaka t38, and a t99. All restored, and one sold for $250. I didn't make any money though, considering all the parts I had bought, the time spent, and fees paid. That was 5 years ago. I also bought a lot of 5 semi auto 22RF rifles off GunBroker for $250. All had problems. 3 had been repaired and restored, one of which was given away. The rest 2 are still waiting for their turns. I think I did ok on this lot. One of the restored ones turned out to be the most accurate I have ever owned. That was about 3 years ago. Some shops in town have bargain rack. I go browsing whenever I happen to be around. I have found a few good ones that way. -TL Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk |

I recognize the utility and value in handloading, but it is far from a necessity. My C&R collection is primarily Mausers, Mosins, and SKS. I have accumulated more 8mm and 7.62x54r surplus over the years than I will ever be able to exhaust. And 7.62x39 is still miraculously cheap.

There's a post in the OP section about the dumbing-down of Californians...

The oddball C&R's do make a case for handloading. I have owned an M95 in the past, as well as Arisakas and a Swedish Mauser. Cheap ammo dearth caused all of them to move on to other collectors. I probably should have kept the Swede, but such is life. Italian milsurps are ugly and uninteresting, same with French. South American Mausers are beautiful but 7mm surplus isn't nearly as easy to find as 8mm.

The .308/7.62X51 conversions can be had for $200 or less. I've got one of those too, $135 ten years ago. PAX

I just picked up a Swiss Schmidt Rubin for $100, and I've seen Mosins recently for $250ish. Log into some of the many shooting forums and check the classifieds often. Deals are out there.

Lots of good advice from knowledgeable folks in this thread. I would look for a Turkish Mauser in 8mm with a good bore. Many are worn from use, and all the ones I have seen, including the one I own are mixmasters.
Anyway, I shot it for the first time sort of by accident. I was grabbing some socked guns from the safe and I thought it was my 98/29 Persian. I was much more excited to shoot the Persian because they are elegant rifles of high quality in every aspect. Plus they are 4x the cost of a mismatched Turk. To make a short story long, I was bummed out at the shooting spot when I realized the switch. The Turk would have to do.. Turns out it is very accurate by milsurp standards with ancient surplus ammo, marginal sight, and my marginal skills. Smooth buttery action, smooth trigger, and just a joy to shoot. Even now they are a great value, probably not much higher than the $200 threshold. 8mm surplus ammo is still somewhat plentiful to this day. |

Century has some Chilean 1895 Mausers in 7mm going for $200. They are antiques, so can ship to your home.
You do need your 03FFL to create an account so they will sell to you. https://www.centuryarms.com/loewe-be...ser-15744.html |

I have a good condition WW2 Russian 1943 Izhevsk Mosin 91/30 listed for sale here:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...3#post23128713 Price is $250 with the sling and bayonet, $225 without them, PPT to be done at The Shootist or Brass And Bass, both in Murrieta. If anyone had the proper permission slips from Big Brother (C&R/COA) and wants to come out to my place by Temecula and pick it up, I'll sell it for $225 with the sling and bayonet or $200 without them. |
