See if you can find a muzzleloading club at a local range near you. I'm sure most people would be more than happy to teach you and let you try out their muzzleloaders. My club is extremely friendly towards beginners and is more than happy to put on a show or let spectators get hands on.

Black Powder Shoot - Morongo Valley
May be too far for you, but High Desert Rod and Gun has a black powder shoot every month:
Join us on the 4th Saturday of each month, 8AM, with any old rifle or pistol, black powder or the modern (it will never catch on) smokeless powder. If you want to rent my cva get a hold of me . You have to buy components. Caps, projectiles, bp or substitute. i may have some pyrodex. Mine is .54 caliber.
