Default Colt DA 38

As mentioned in some of my older posts I acquired a collection of firearms and have been slowly going through them. Here's a Colt DA 38. Looks pretty rough and the grips have some damage.

Is this what you would refer to as a M1892 New Army?

That is one neat old Colt! Perfect used condition. If it could only tell stories!

Right? It looks like someone even used the butt of the revolver as a hammer at some point.

Nice - I like it, and that grip profile is sort of unique too.

You can use .38spl brass and make your own handloads for these.

Light wadcutter level loads are just right.

Please don't do anything to "improve" the look of this old classic...

Especially the grips.

Preserve it just as it us.

If it were mine I would request from Colt the information they have about who this revolver was originally sold to.

very unique.

as in not factory. civilian model New Army and Navy, which you can tell it is by the rampant Colt on the frame, were sold with checkered hard rubber grip panels.

and not in "round butt" configuration. it would be interesting to see how much of that grip frame steel is left.

Model 1905 Marine Corps model had round butt, less than 1000 made. They did have the rampant Colt.

One coming up for auction next week

This revolver is one of only 926 Colt Model 1905 Double Action Revolvers purchased by the Marine Corps between 1905 and 1909. The Model 1905 Revolver was the first handgun manufactured specifically for the Marine Corps. This revolver was a New Model Army and Navy revolver with a modified grip frame and distinctive two-piece checkered walnut grips with a rounded contour butt.
But they were marked USMC on the butt it seems. Did someone try make a USMC? It would be interesting to have a look at the grip frame under the grip panels.

Either way it is a nice looking gun with a lot of character!

Looks similar with the round butt but the markings on the butt on mine only have serial numbers and nothing else compared to the one in the link. Sure would be cool if it were that rare!

Guess what - OP's serial comes back to a 1905 USMC revolver

https://www.colt.com/serial-lookup

10189

Perhaps not all of them were marked USMC? It may be worth getting a factory letter.

Looky here - I think it is a legit Civilian Marine Corps 1905, only 926 of them made

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt_M...5_Marine_Corps

Quote:
A small number (less than 850) are known to have been issued under military contract. These revolvers are marked on the butt with the appropriate USMC markings and are serial numbered 001 through at least 812. A further 926 copies were made between 1905 and 1909 for the commercial (civilian) market, and these revolvers are serial numbered on the butt from 10001 through 10926.[1]

I?ll be honest this is really exciting. Thanks Skyhawk for doing all this research. It?s always exciting to learn about the history of these firearms and finding gems. I think I will order a letter from Colt. Wouldn?t hurt to learn more about the provenance.

I have never cared for the looks of them much, worse asthetics design I think Colt ever had..But being a USMC one,I could overlook that..LOL

Great Revolver! I love the old Colt DA's.

Here's my Colt New Model Army M1892 DA in .41 LC made in 1898.

Very cool! I'd prefer yours to a pristine one, even without the super awesome USMC provenance.
