Why do people say Like New when the gun has been fired

Beautiful revolver! And I agree. We should have one we can shoot. I take this one to the range when I feel for .357 revolver. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you had to sit thru hundreds of classroom hours in sensitivity training listening to instructors talking out of
both sides of their mouths in the name of Emotional Intelligence, you too would find it perfectly acceptable to label a shot-out old clunker POS handgun as NIB. |

500 rounds down the pipe for a gun is barely breaking it in. Most guns are going to shoot thousands of rounds before you have any part wearing out. If there was a glock that someone took to the range 3 times, shot a few hundred rounds, cleaned it and oiled, then it sat in the safe, never holstered, no marks, etc, yeah, "Like new" other than a rounds through it. Would it make a difference if it were a 2 month old Gen 5 Glock or how about a 35 year old Gen 1 that sat in a safe or closet somewhere?

I don’t get the obsession with super low round counts, to me any well cared for gun with under 5000 rounds fired is pretty much in ‘like new condition’ and 5000 to 10,000 just means it’s well broke in, I’m talking mostly handguns.
Everyone wants to buy a gun with less then two hundred rounds fired, doesn’t anyone shoot any more or are they all lying. If a gun has two hundred rounds or two thousand rounds fired makes absolutely no difference to me if I’m thinking about buying it.

Its pretty simple. A new gun would have never been dros'd while a like new gun has been dros'd and perhaps test fired by the owner. I would think under 200rds would qualify and anything over that would be considered excellent condition.

Lying SOBs
Because gun owners, like fisherman and hunters lie like rugs. Millennials lie more than boomers because they have no religious upbringing to tell them otherwise. Democrats lie more than republicans so as we get more of them owning guns, they’ll lie even more. Men lie more than women but women are catching on and lying more too. In short - that’s why I buy new guns mostly because I don’t trust anyone who I haven’t know at least a decade, not to lie to me.

My first real full-time job as a youngster was working 6 days a week solo at a second-hand book store. Aka a "Used books" store.
People would bring in boxes of books and I'd determine if the owner would be okay with me buying them. THEN I'd have to evaluate each one as either: FINE NEAR FINE VERY GOOD GOOD FAIR POOR COLLECTIBLE and price accordingly. So if you held a brand new book and read a few sentences from page 117 and the last page of the book, then put it back on the shelf is it now used? |

I remember an add for a rearsenaled, beat up Mosin that the seller was advertising as "unfired". I called him on it and he stated that it was, in fact, "unfired" by him.

Why call a used gun "as new"? Because it is like new; except that they fired a box of ammo through it. If it were unfired by the first purchaser, then it would be "new". If it were unfired by all subsequent purchasers it would be a safe queen of dubious virtue.
Gun shops that have ranges adjacent may sometimes have "new" guns in stock with a lot of brass smear on the breechface, and shiny areas on the mating surfaces. If you ask, those guns were subjected to "extended random testing at the manufacturer"... The reason the original purchaser is selling a gun is more important than if they shot it or not. Perhaps it jams and they are dumping it. Else, a gun with 1000 rounds through it probably runs OK, contingent on field stripping to examine the internals for odd wear or peening. |

Like new is like new! I've owned a number of guns over the decades that I bought just because I wanted to---maybe shot 100-150 rds over the years---not a mark or ding or scratch or rust---looks exactly like new, just been shot a little, cleaned and oiled and put away---I'm not claiming it IS new, just it appears like new---I don't have any problem with describing a gun like this and I believe most people understand what I'm saying... Buyers of my "like new" guns always remark how clean and perfect looking my guns are---if they're not like new, I would further describe their condition in detail to the prospective buyer!

Similar thing to "relic'ing" in the guitar world. Aging from the factory to make it look/feel more played in, but when it comes time to sell it can you still say it's mint? How do you know which dings are from the factory or which are ones you added yourself.
I'd say like new should be no mags through it because then it's actually as if it was new, however a mag or two through the gun would be ok in my book too. |
