i heard shipment for the GI Slings from Appleseed may take some time, and i really dont want to push it til the last minute
so what other alternatives would i have? something over the counter and that wouldnt need any "modifications" i would need 3, in black, preferably NYLON to go on: 1 - Ruger 10/22 with Archangel Target Stock 1 - Remington 597 (box stock) i still need to mount a stud to this one 1 - Mossberg tactical 22 any info would be greatly appreciated THANK YOU!

most surplus stores have basically the same sling that AS sells. Although the AS slings I got look to be better quality than the surplus stores cheap chinese copies.

The GI Sling is nice because of the price and if all you need is something to make carrying it on your shoulder easier it does the job well. However, when you get into actual running and gunning it is not all that flexible.
I found that when rigged for side carry the Vickers Padded Adjustable 2-Point Sling made by both 5.11 Tactical and Blue Force Gear to be the best in breed. Especially the padded model. It can be adjusted very quickly on the fly while you are running and gunning. Plus, unlike single point slings you won't accidentally turn yourself into a eunuch. |

Go with a cotton sling. I went to an Appleseed this past weekend and bought one from my shoot boss. My nylon tactical (Uncle Mike's?) sling started to "stretch" under the heat of the sun no matter how often I adjusted it.

+1 for versatility and ease of use. I won't post it again for fear of the dupe trolls, but look them up on YouTube. Viking Tactics or VTAC sling should do the trick there.

The Vickers sling is an awesome sling for what it was made for. That was not Appleseed. Get a GI sling, it is the best for Appleseed Period. Since this is the Appleseed forum and Not the mall ninja forum I am guessing what we should be looking at is what works at an Appleseed not what looks cool with my katana machete. Just saying.

They can also be really slippery, and depending on your clothing sometimes it's hard for them to keep put. I tried nylon at first and had some real problems with it.

I just noticed the OP wanted black. In that case the CMP is not an option. They're in OD Green.
As far as I know, there aren't any true cotton web slings in black. They're all a variation of nylon blend. I would recommend just going with a leather Turner Sling, a National Match sling which is available in black. Fairly inexpensive and you can get them at a ton of vendors. ![]()

The 1907 or turners slings are great and will do exactly the same as the GI sling. Except that they can be difficult to learn how to use, and there is a limited amount of time at the appleseed. You can learn and be up and shooting with a GI sling much faster. If you are experienced with them by all means bring it, but if not then go with the GI sling.
Also the OD GI sling's have an innate advantage over the black. You can right/mark the sling for different positions. And put you name or mark on them. |

Joe the Electrician just finished the list of reasons why a cotton OD sling is the best choice for an Appleseed rifle. Inexpensive, ease of use, quickly adjusted, won't slip like nylon, can mark positions like prone & seated.

So it is my understanding that the Appleseed GI slings are 1.25" and that the standard sling swivels for the 10/22 are 1." Does anyone have any advice about how I should go about putting a sling on my 10/22? It has no swivels yet.
Also, I have a synthetic stock. Is that going to be a problem for the wood screws? |

If your stock is not wood then the wood screw style is the wrong kind. If your stock (under the barrel) is an open honeycomb then use a machine screw stud and a nut (with locktite)

TI quick slings cuff really fast to get in to. If you are going to just use it for appleseed then it might be too expensive though.

Thanks, but yeah those are a bit expensive since it would mainly be for Appleseed.
I don't think my stock is honeycomb. It's divided into about 4 open sections under the barrel, each about 2.5" long. I have the synthetic carbine model, so I think I should be able to fit the front swivel to the barrel band. Please correct me if I am wrong. The stock feels like it might be hollow where the rear swivel would go, but since it's synthetic, it's hard to tell. |

4 open sections = honeycombed. Use a nut.
Hollow rear stock = yes it is hollow, pull of the buttpad and use a nut in there too. Take the barrel band off and leave it at home. It is not helpful for accuracy in the Ruger 10/22. Connecting a sling mount to it allows you to make the problem even worse.

If you can use 1.25" slings, I prefer the USGI heavy canvas web slings. They always hold and don't slip. Try this on ebay I loved them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/M1-Garand-GR...#ht_500wt_1127

I attended my first Appleseed this last weekend and brought an authentic Magpul MS2 for my AR. This did not work well at all for Appleseed, it slipped of my bicep and was a constant problem. The recommended USGI sling is cheap easy to find and use and just plain works. Luckily, an instructor lent me one for the weekend. I also wish I was shooting a 10/22, but I'll save that rant for a different thread.

For anyone attending an Appleseed at Chabot, we have gotten the range office to start selling the appropriate USGI cotton web slings. I think they are also stocking the appropriate swivels (the more common 1" swivels are too small for these slings).

What do you guys think about Viking Tactics' Sniper Sling? Here is the demonstration video.
![]() It's expensive but looks really ergonomic. Should be fine for Appleseed too, I suppose. I'm thinking to make a similar DIY sling. I just don't see the point to use GI sling for prone in combat - it takes too much time to deploy. And if one has 30 seconds, isn't it better to spend this time finding cover and rifle forend support? |

Think of it as a training aid. Appleseed isn't going to pop people out as combat trained. There's no discussion of tactics as well as a host of other things. What it will do is take people who can't make a decent group to save their soul and give them the fundamentals of shooting a rifle in various positions.
