Anyone know of anyone in San Diego area that is able to sign off for a shotgun shooting badge? My son went off to camp and they had him shoot a 12 gauge for the target practical and that was a bit too much for his shoulder to take. He was only able to do 1 round of 25 shells before a substantial bruise showed up. He has completed all of the items on his blue card save for the 2 rounds of 25, and I was hoping to find someone that could help.
Thanks in advance! |

your troop advancement chair can provide you a list of approved councilors from SDIC Council.
Sorry, I no longer have a current list. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Is there a way to teach him a proper handling technique to prevent injury and have him complete the task? Would a 20 gauge still satisfy the requirement?

25+ years ago 20ga was all my summer camp had one or two years. In fact I think that was the first shotgun I ever shot was a 20ga at Boy Scout summer camp. I can’t imagine there’d be a gauge requirement if 12ga is allowable. Then again it’s 2022 and nothing makes sense.

He is aware of safe handling and had the stock bedded in his shoulder, there was just too much force with the 12 gauge after he had already completed all the shooting for his rifle badge. It was also a 12 gauge pump shotgun, so not even a little less recoil with something like a semi-auto.

You might try contacting Lemon Gorve Rod and Gun Club in Alpine. I know that they have scout shoots periodically, along with women shoots and youth trap shoots every 2nd/4th Saturday as well.

Lemon grove rod and gun has a Girl Scout rifle shoot August 7th and a Boy Scout Shotgun shoot Oct 2nd. Both events will have a Shotgun Merit Badge counselor there.

If he has to stay with a 12 gauge and he wasn't shooting 7/8 ounce loads at 1200 fps (or less), I'd try to get some for him.
You can get some online here. https://www.sgammo.com/product/12-ga...-team-evo-trai Here's another brand, but I couldn't find any in stock anywhere. These are a little slower, 1150 fps. https://www.wholesalehunter.com/Prod...tails/11115721 If he's okay with the weight of the 12 gauge, I'd stick with it using a 7/8 ounce load vs using a 20 gauge with a 7/8 ounce load. The 12 gauge will most likely weigh more than a 20 gauge and will help reduce the amount of felt recoil. |

I thought all the youth shooting was over because of Gavin signing that stupid law..... Has something changed?
