changingman, the last time I went to shoot at BLM I came in and cleaned the area prior to shooting. I filled the bed of my truck with trashbags full of garbage and a full sized wash machine. I raked the shotgun shells and clays, then loaded them as well. Guess how many people that left all that crap paid to the landfill charges....

By time time I had finished cleaning up prior to shooting it was almost 3 hours later and I had no more time to shoot. Please delete your post. The a-holes that wreck our shooting areas only search the internet then go shoot and leave all their $ H I T out there for someone else to pickup.

This is especially important right now because most public indoor and outdoor ranges are closed due to coronavirus, and people have nowhere to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights.

Cleaning up after shooting is like an honor system which relies on individual responsibility, which will always be a challenge. There is no easy fix. Perhaps we can foster a more accountable and educated shooting community by making public information easily accessible.
Those of us who have been around long enough to see numerous shooting spots closed down over the years know better.

If you are worried about people knowing where to find legal spots to shoot, the ones who actually care about obeying the law have plenty of resources to figure it out, and generally do not have much trouble doing the legwork and/or going out with a group to do a cleanup or fun shoot to learn about new spots.

Most of the time, the ones who are benefiting from having shooting spots openly posted on the internet are the lazy people who don't want to double and triple check maps, make the drives out to explore, talk to fellow shooters who know and trust them etc. Instead, they are going to find the first relevant thing that comes up on Google, load the truck up with beer and whatever junk they have laying around that they feel they can use as a target, and they are going to go shoot, whether the spot they found is legal or not.

I was just out for a drive through an area today that has been closed to shooting for about 10 years due to people trashing it and doing generally unsafe things, low and behold, we heard someone shooting out there. Do you really think they were the type of people who cared about finding legal places to shoot, respect the land and pick up their trash when they are done? Or do you think it's more likely they picked the first thing that came up in google and went there, regardless of the fact that shooting there is now illegal.

I get that you may not have been around as long as some others, but if you want to see a living breathing example of what can happen to a shooting spot after it gets blasted all over the internet, go check out pink gate. Only a matter of time til its closed down and the hoard will move on to the next closest spot.

I think its short sighted and disrespectful for you to leave your post up.

Thank you all for the constructive comments. I have removed the location information and driving directions from my original post. I have also updated the post with other relevant information from the BLM website. I appreciate the pointers.

Following since I'm moving to SD in a few months. I would love to take my sons shooting. It'll be no different than when we're at home. Telling them to pick up their trash will be like telling them to clean their room. Failure to do so will result in spankings, lol.

Also, it looks like the only things in my gun room that we'll be able to shoot are my Mossberg 146b-a, and a Heritage single action revolver. Everything else will have to stay out of state, which is a shame.

Where in VA? Are you military? I moved from Norfolk, VA via Orange County to San Diego now. I'm not military but it seems lots of military folks I've met here were in Norfolk at one point or another.

It was either Commiefornia or DC. I've been in Virginia long enough to know I'm done with it and never want to come back. I'm also hoping CA is just a pass thru -- a 3 year pass thru. I really like having my guns, but Commiefornia seems to believe they are some how more dangerous because they have cosmetic features made of polymer or metal instead of wood, or the freedom seed box holds too many freedom seeds.

Me, personal, no. I'm a medically retired veteran. My wife, however, is active duty. I met her after going home to Utah once I was discharged. A few years later we're married, she has a degree, and decides to join.

We're getting off topic, and I don't want to threadjack. If there's anymore questions not pertaining to the thread topic, please send me a PM.

Thank you sir. We know your hearts in the right place trying to help fellow shooters, but unfortunately irresponsible people have ruined it for the rest of us. There’s a good group of people here that devote their time to keep those areas clean (and I try to haul as much as I can when I’m there) to keep those areas open for us to enjoy.

Most backcountry shooting spots (never been to the urban areas like Pink Gate) are cleaner than they used to be. Either there are fewer shooters or people are picking up.

I'm now seeing "clean up your sh*t" signs posted. Some don't have bullet holes in them, yet.

Went out to pink gate with my daughter today, there were 3 other groups. The area we shot in was pretty messy (pallets, clays, metal poles, shotgun wads galore). We took some but we were in a sedan so we couldn't take bigger items.

Damn fool mofos.
Wish some strongly worded signage could be put up but as I understand it that's not allowed.
And yeah before someone says it.. probably wouldn't matter.

Good job taking your daughter out for shooting and cleaning up.

People complain regarding BLM closure to shooting and they leave crapload of mess.
I remember Kitchen Creek use to be great place to shoot.

I saw a woman walking up the tracks at Octillo picking up brass. The place was over-run with ATV and moto riders because the ORVA is closed. Never saw so much traffic out there, dust city.

Going to Pink Gate this coming week to zero some things but I plan on bringing 3x as much stuff back. Have a bunch of old yard stuff I need to get dumped, so I’ll just add it to my pile. Stay safe everyone.

Are the “Bio safe” clays ok? Not for such a publicly known place as the Pink Gate but elsewhere?

Further east is less rain and slower breakdowns of clays. Use steel or paper targets and leave no trace...

No clays on BLM land are OK.....they are an eyesore and they do not bio degrade. Unless you plan on picking up all the pieces.....leave them for the formal skeet or trap ranges.

It's dangerous don't go, especially off the 8. Very spooky. Drug cartels have houses there. Homeless people have full auto gattling guns on their Mad Max mobiles. Stay away if you value your life

Changingman,

10. Currently, BLM prohibits the use or possession of assault weapons on public lands – even legally registered ones. No other specific calibers are restricted.

Where exactly did you get this?

I can't find this anywhere on BLM websites and, in the past the BLM has not shown much interest in California "assault weapon" regulations.

I found this line in the document I got from BLM Palm Springs Office. Upon closer examination it seems like this was last revised in 2007. I just sent an email to one of the BLM administrative support assistants for clarification, and will update my post when I get a response.

Went out today. Signs are up. No more shooting. Fire season. This was at pink gate.

Just got back from BLM land in Imperial County. I was disgusted at how people bring junk and leave trash out there. I didn’t have my truck otherwise I would have hauled off some bigger parts. People were patiently waiting for us to be done so they could jump in but wow. Asked them to please clean up what they can on their way out. Took a trash bag full home. This place needs a group clean up for sure. Be back with help next time.

Other then that it was amazing to be outside in the open again.

Wow, I hate seeing people trash shooting areas. Is that an easy up someone abandoned? Shame.

I feel pink gate will be gone in a couple of years. New gun owners, Pink gate isn't a mystery, it's basically well known, and just about every car that isn't slammed to the ground can get to it.

Have gone, but after the last fire being started by those idiots, I've almost settled on SBRG when I'm out in the area instead.

I really don't understand how people could be so thoughtless and inconsiderate. we took our dog for a walk by sunset cliffs the other morning....so much trash, beer cans, empty take out food bags and containers left on the cliffs and in front of peoples homes. We filled up 2 grocery bags full in just a few minutes. And what's with all the tagging on people's homes and fences. It's disheartening. San Diego is changing fast.
