Please don't. Obviously the people who go there don't want it ruined like so many other places have been and then closed. For example, Kitchen Creek, Orosco Ridge, Jacumba. If you figure it out or someone helps you through a PM, then please don't blast that info all over the internet.

Sounds like there was some kind of enforcement action out at Pink Gate today. Does anyone have a consolidated list of legal requirements to shoot on public land? E.g., no steel core ammo, reg letter with AWs?

I drove past it on my way to South Bay Rod and Gun. I saw a lot of cars parked outside the gate along with a Ranger's vehicle. I could see him talking to some people.
A few hours later on the way home they were all gone.
I have no idea what happened other than that, but clearly something did happen

I saw sir toast's post. I really want to make sure I'm compliant and he implied there was something wrong with the rifles themselves.... Was hoping to get some visibility on any rules.

A fine rake helps a lot. No 4x4 needed, at pink gate you just park on the side of the road.

Hello, I’m new to the gun forums. I have searched for BLM land in the San Diego area, but have had no luck finding an actual location that’s safe and legal to head out towards. I’m close to otay but have no idea where to go to. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

People are going to be reluctant to give up their favorate spots because everyone starts going there, leaving trash and they end up getting shut down. I'd suggest u Join us on some of the BLM land cleanups and you'll probably find a few spots.

Send sdfire a message and ask to get put on the list for cleanup weekends and join us. Unfortunately I don't know when the next one will be.

I drove by pink gate yesterday. It was packed. I'll never shoot there again. We went to my spot and there was no one around except two people on a quad not wearing helmets and flying a mexican flag.

Beautiful day and we set up the steel and ran a bunch of pistol drills.

CBP at the checkpoint did ask us if we were out shooting and who we worked for.

I haven't been to pink gate in a few months. Be sure to read all the rules on the board as you enter the area and don't violate the rules. Don't park in front of the gate either.

Also, do us all a favor and pack out more than you pack in. It is really rewarding doing that.

Here is my prior posted referenced above. Again, I emphasize that I don't know what the issue was with the guys shooting the AR-15. I don't know if it was "illegal" or anything. The ranger did not confiscate it. I didn't get the privilege to speak to them.

Be safe.

Default San Diego BLM Location and Legal Information

*EDIT: Location information has been redacted due to requests from Calgunners. Some new information has also been added.

Hello Calguns,

I have obtained two PDFs containing information regarding shooting locations and relevant legal codes* in the San Diego Area. This information was sent to me by the Bureau of Land Management Palm Springs office in March of 2020 from an inquiry. Remember to always respect any fire restrictions and clean up after yourselves. The summarized information from the two PDFs are reproduced below. Please download to view the full document with detailed information.

Shooting Areas – ██████ (best for Temecula & north county residents)

*Some of this information may be out of date. Please reference the latest legal codes from your preferred online source.

New information added below

From the BLM:
Quote:
Practice Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly principles. Whenever you venture out on public lands, you should follow outdoor ethics to preserve the great outdoors for future generations. Do your part to keep public lands clean and prevent the spread of invasive species.
Quote:
Do not attach targets to plants or place targets against rocks, plants, or solid objects. It is illegal to deface or destroy trees, signs, outbuildings, or other objects on federal lands.
Quote:
Carry in your targets and carry out all litter, brass and shell casings. All targets, shell casings, debris and trash must be removed.
Quote:
Access to public lands must be on public roads. Crossing private lands to access public land is not permitted, unless you obtain and carry written, date-specific permission from the private landowner.
Where can I find a good spot in a BLM parcel to shoot in San Diego?
You have a few options.
1. Do your own research. BLM parcel information data is public, and you can find the online interactive GIS map using this link to plan your trip. You can also buy hard copy BLM maps at your local BLM office.
2. Contact your local BLM office via phone call or email, and they will send you the unredacted PDFs giving you specific driving instructions and recommended shooting locations within San Diego.
3. Contact shooters at your local gun range/gun club and ask members to give you advice. YMMV
4. Contact Calgun members and ask them to give you advice. YMMV
5. It is highly recommended that you check with the BLM office having jurisdiction over that area for current conditions, regulations, fire hazard closures and other information.

It's best when people do their own research.

Publishing shooting areas makes them crowded with people that won't clean up after themselves.

I realize u think you're being a nice but you're just fast tracking the shutdown of the areas u listed.

I tend to disagree with that sentiment. I'd rather people know where it is legal to shoot and know the laws, so they don't get themselves arrested or fined by shooting in the wrong areas (like someone's private land) or worse, starting a fire. This is especially important right now because most public indoor and outdoor ranges are closed due to coronavirus, and people have nowhere to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights.

Cleaning up after shooting is like an honor system which relies on individual responsibility, which will always be a challenge. There is no easy fix. Perhaps we can foster a more accountable and educated shooting community by making public information easily accessible.

That's very idealistic but when you get to your favorite spot and it's packed with people and full of trash..... And a few months later they to shut it down because it's turned into a dump then you might feel differently.

You didn't even emphasize the "clean up after yourself" issue in your OP which suggests u haven't been around long enough to see how these things turn out and how important it is.

Clean up after your selves. Leave nothing behind. Pick up your brass. Don't shoot clay pigeons.

I fully support what SDMUST is doing with the BLM land cleanups. People meet other shooters, clean up and find new places to shoot. He talks about some responsible ways to shoot and what sort of targets to use.

It's a far better way to get people out shooting responsibly on our public lands and those peopl are more likely to clean up after themselves and preserve our public lands.

Highly agree with him, and wholly dislike this post.

You have no idea how messy these places get when irresponsible people Go shoot and leave their trash. If you disagree with us then why are there members on here that give so many hours of their free time throughout the year to have cleanups? As it is these places get trashed. Now the directions to them are out in the open with easy access for the masses or casual shooters who don’t give a damn to visit and trash. We’re in danger of losing these shooting spots, if it wasn’t for members like SDfire and all his efforts we may have lost them years ago because of the fires.

At least delete the directions

There seem to be two types of shooters.

1. People who want to be safe while shooting and clean up after themselves. These people tend to research where and how to shoot safely and care about the area they shoot in.

2. The hordes of shooters that don't give a rat's azz and bring garbage to BLM land and shoot whatever with little regard for their actions or the mess they leave. These people tend to take the easy way out and just google where to shoot, find a thread like this one and drive out there.

It is the hordes of shooters in category 2 that get the place shut down. Threads like this one tend to direct the hordes who would otherwise not know where to go right to the BLM land and it is only a matter of time before those areas get shut down, like so many other sites.

This is especially true now that there are so few sites left in southern Kalifornia. I hope the mods delete this thread.

I wish we could openly share this stuff, and it's sucks but I have to agree...
Delete the info.

I've seen spot after spot get shut down forever. Many "old timers" here, and you don't have to be that old, remember Kitchen Creek. RIP.

And they have tried to shut down some of the spots listed by the OP.

Please delete this info.

Every place on public land I shot on growing up is now closed because too many people trashed the places.

I use the locations you posted. I bring all my own steel targets and clean up trash I didn't leave. The people I bring with me do the same. I always find trash left behind from others. Increasing the amount of people shooting out there will increase the trash and get it closed down.

If you want to be helpful. Take your friends out there, do some shooting and fill some trash bags and leave it nicer than you found it.

Agree. Please delete. Its like posting the locations of secret surfing spots. Before long they just end up crowded. Im already picking up too much trash left behind at these spots on the rare occasion i have time to visit them.

Agreed . . . sadly.

Wait.... you can't shoot a registered BBAW on BLM? What?? that's stupid. considering it is federal land does that apply to federally registered AW from the 2000 ban or the local CA registered BBAW?

But yes advertising shooting spots makes them bad for everyone, please clean up after yourselves and take out more than you take in, let's keep these places open.
