Mid January. I was lucky however and brought lots of documentation to the first interview, so much they asked if I could do the 2nd interview the same day and pay the $105 , so that’s what I did. Not sure if that shortened the process that much as I just got approved and I think its about 8 weeks now.

What do you do if you don't work? It seems like all of these good cause statements are based on work. Is a person who doesnt work, like a retiree, out of luck?

I'm retired and got my permit in December.

I used "shooting in remote parts of the county where cell service is sketchy and police response time would be delayed." The value of my truck and guns puts me at an increased risk for theft. There is also the threat of attacks from wild animals when we're at our shooting spot and while we hike.

I included:
The dates I went (1-3 times per month for the last six months)
Map of location
Pictures of the area
Pictures of my guns
Pictures of me, my buddy, my guns and my truck (while holding a copy of the front page of the San Diego Union to substantiate the date)
Receipts for the guns to substantiate their value

You don't have to use shooting. You could use hiking, camping, off-roading, etc. Think about how you can "prove" that you do whatever it is that you say you do. For example, if you camp, can you get a receipt from the campground, etc.

I would also strongly encourage you to read and study the information on SDCGO's website thoroughly, and attend one of their CCW seminars.

For sure make an appointment, you will have plenty of time to work on your good cause and take a seminar on how to get cow.

My second interview was mid Jan also. Haven’t heard anything yet. Getting a little worried with people being approved 40, 47 days and seeing people from mid Jan getting their approval letters. Hopefully it’s an oversight and mine is on the way. Fingers crossed

They take their own sweet time, you can call them and ask for the status on your app, I did after about 6 weeks but they just said it’s being processed and they could be waiting for something regarding background to come in. You’ll probably hear next week sometime. I just called this morning to get an appt to come in to pick up the permit but they told me the guy wasn’t in today. So the wait goes on!

Owner at work called last month to make an appointment ... early August was the soonest. No surprise there based on what we've seen.

But the sheriff's office called him today to reschedule for a sooner date ... week of April 22nd was pretty much wide open. That's a massive difference in availability! Anyone else heard of an earlier reschedule?

I hope it is...and not a slow down of applicants. Or even worse, reverting back to pre 2018. Let’s hope they have a better system in place that is causing the faster appointment times

I don’t think they are reverting but could be a slow down in applicants . It’s not a cheap venture for a lot of people. They’re looking at $400-500 bucks when you add fees and the class. I can see how it might be slowing somewhat!

I was looking at ccw class prices a year ago , looks like they’ve gone from $100-150 to $250. These guys saw an opportunity. I paid 250 last Thursday . So this could very we’ll be a reason for lower volume of people applying.

Don't even get me started. I paid $200 for my class. It's highway robbery for what it is.

I took an 8 hour course June of 2014 with CCW USA Firearms Training. Is that still good for applying or am I going to have to retake the course?

You must retake and within a time limit, I forget, something like 30 days.

And it doesn't help that there is "approved list" of 29 instructors/training facilities that you have to select from.

Just picked mine up this morning, real nice guy named Bernardo helped me out. I asked if their was any slowdown in applications he said NO that they were backed up now through December. I guess it’s not cost prohibitive to lots of people yet. Anyone still interested should probably get going on it before the wait gets longer !

While this is a short month (Feb) and 83 seems like a weak increase (relative to previous months), IIRC I read somewhere that they're in the process of streamlining the app process and as anyone knows, when making a switch, even a switch to something better, things often slow down until after the transition is complete. I'll withhold judgment until June.

From: https://www.sdsheriff.net/licensing/ccw.html
Looks like Gore's cranked out 128 new CCWs last month -- that's 32/week!

Yet another record total. If this keeps up, Gore will be closing in on 3,500 CCWs by year's end.

Whatever happened to all the skeptics who used to post saying Gore isn't issuing more CCWs and then when that was proven false, said he'd go back to restrictive issuance if/once he got reelected?

Ive had no such luck, scheduled 1st appt early Feb and they scheduled it out to last week of Oct. called today to see if they could bump it up earlier and they said someone is going through a list to bump up appts. Not aure how true that is, hopefully I get a call though.

Being a SD native that relocated 20 some years ago, good to see this moving in the right direction for you. Congrats you guys.
When I first applied up here around 2009 it took quite a few months to get in, and you had to have a bit more of a good cause statement than now. We love Sheriff Mims up here, she gets it!

A county the size of San Diego should have 100,000 permits or more. Save the thanks until Gore decides to respect the Constitution and accept simple self-defense as good cause. State law allows him to do so now, but he disingenuously claims otherwise. Until then, he certainly doesn't deserve three exclamation points and a half dozen jumping smileys for a slight uptick in issuance.

Anyone think there will be an increase in applications due to the recent shooting? Will this tragedy encourage the Jewish community to apply? Do you think being Jewish alone would be a good enough cause to receive a CCW permit?

1 - Probably, there was a huge increase after San Bernardino, however, our Sheriff got on TV and effectively advertised that they WANT people to carry for self defense.
2 - Tough call. They tend to lean liberal democrat, even though Israelis tend to lean conservative and absentee ballots from US citizens living in Israel lean to the right.
3 - "Personal protection of myself and my family" *should* be sufficient good cause. This attack targeted Jews, but he also hated Muslims, the planned attack in Long Beach would have targeted White Nationalists. The shooting in North Carolina did not target any specific demographic group, nor did Parkland, Sandy Hook, San Bernardino....

Yeah, so? When Gore changed his policy there were only something like 300 to 400 CCWs. He's now on track to break 3,000 by the end of the year.

Hutchens, in OC, reduced CCWs down to something like 300 to 400 when she had to clear out corruption. Then she accepted SD = GC after our 3-judge panel win in Peruta in 2014. After we lost en banc in 2016, she stopped accepting SD = GC and required minimal GC and "proof" of that minimal. Under that standard, before she left office in Jan, she had >20,000 active CCWs!

Since Sheriff Gore's CCW Unit has been in contact with OC's to get advice on streamlining and speeding up their process, I fully expect SD Co's numbers to follow OC's trajectory. IOW, in 3 to 5 years, I expect SD to break 10,000 CCWs and in a few years after that, 20,000. Hopefully, before that happens, we'll win a Carry Case at SCOTUS and we'll have a "right to carry", once again, under the 2nd A (without fear of being arrested).

CA CCWs do not derive their authority from the federal Constitution's 2nd A to the BoR. They are permits issued under state statutory law and they're to exercise a privilege, not a right.

His interpretation of the statute governing GC and CCWs is a reasonable interpretation, especially since the statute requires the applicant to prove GC exist (How do you prove "self-defense" exist?) While other sheriffs interpret the statute differently (i.e., they accept SD = GC), Gore's (and Hutchen's, while she was sheriff), is not unreasonable.

The SDCSD's GC standard is NOT an insurmountable barrier if one is willing to do more than whine. Just look at all the approved GC statements SDCGO has listed on their website: https://sandiegocountygunowners.com/ccw/

He does for now more liberally issuing CCWs when he doesn't have to and especially since doing so required him to put his ego aside and publicly change his previous anti position.
