If you're willing to put in the time, effort and $$, you can absolutely get one. But it WILL take some time and effort on your part.

1) First thing Monday, call the Sheriff's office and get your first interview scheduled. They're probably 8 months out at this point so you'll have plenty of time to do your research and pull your application together. You can always reschedule or cancel your appointment later. But with the backlog, you want to get your appointment scheduled ASAP

2) Next, SDCGO has some excellent information on their site on how to go about this. Go read it thoroughly. You may want to consider going to one of their meetings or the session Cessna Driver linked you to

https://sandiegocountygunowners.com/ccw/

3) Read this thread and whatever else you can find here that's been written on this topic

4) Ask specific questions here where you have them.

But note again, this will take some time and effort on your part. Consider it a test to weed out the people that aren't truly committed. People here are pretty helpful if you're doing your part. Admitting you're a lazy POS is great...thanks for the honesty...but it won't get you very far with this. I'm not trying to be an A Hole. It's just some friendly advice on the environment here.

Hey, Thanks for all the info! I will call and make the appt. What I meant was It was to overwhelming to go back through and read everything if the chances were slim anyway. I appreciate all the info! Now that I know there's a chance I will be trying to go through it all.

That's on the high side, but not the longest.
Some counties are at 2 years. San Bernardino tends to run around 5-6 months.

Ah they said they are trying to speed it up. I'm going to go to a CCW seminar at TheGlockStore that's by SDCGO. I need to buy a CCW gun because all I have is a 75bd. I'm probably going to buy a Shield 9. I need to work on my cause but as a 24 year old college student i'm having trouble coming up with something that would work.

Good choice with the Shield. Some with larger hands don't like it. My hands are not "big" but my fingers are very long, and I shoot it very well.

There are a lot of broke college kids that support SDCGO, not with dollars, but with time. Get on their mailing list, when a pro 2A candidate needs their help SDCGO can organize groups of volunteers to walk precincts and pass out flyers to help them get elected. It takes a tremendous amount of work to defend your rights, it took years to even get to the point of getting the sheriff to issue ccw's, he wouldn't issue even during/after the Peruta suit against him, you should consider giving a little bit of your time to help out.

Just thought I would mention it here. Once you do get your Ca permit, the Arizona permit is supposed to be pretty easy. Below is a link to AZ DPS and on the lefthand side of the webpage is a spot for you to request an application. Their's is a lot simpler than ours. You'll need...

1) Complete their two page application
2) Find a Live Scan place or similar to complete two finger print cards. This will cost you $20-$30 depending on where you go
3) A $60 application fee (Money Order, etc. No personal checks or credit cards)
4) A copy of your CA permit
5) There's a 6-8 week processing time

Good luck! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

I'll add to this, that having your AZ permit ahead of SD, may make it even easier.

That was my impression but I can't prove it. I have a permit for Washington and the clerk commented that it was a plus. Like somebody else trusted you enough to give you a permit and you haven't shot anyone yet, so we'll give you one too.

AZ is about as slam dunk as it gets with almost any proof of training. No need to hassle with CA before you get AZ.

I finally called and got my appointment for as soon as.... November haha.
Getting the clock started.
The lady I spoke to was extremely kind and helpful and it felt like she honestly was rooting for me.

My point was that if you're going through the CA process anyway, you'll have everything you need once you're finished. If you just want to go for an AZ permit, you can always take whatever type of class you think will meet their requirement.

I understood what you were saying, but there’s no reason to wait until you have a SD permit in hand.

I think I just sent my hunters safety card with the AZ app. The training for SD or any NRA training will also suffice for AZ IIRC.

Then how are you going to afford the fees for the CCW, a gun, ammo, training, holster, etc?

FWIW, I received my resident AZ CCW (using my now-worthless CA CCW for the shooting portion) in about a week.

Just saw this on the Kern Co SO website (http://www.kernsheriff.com/licensing.aspx). I can't wait to see what the 2018 stats will show. Hopefully, San Diego Co SO will make similar continual progress.

Hopefully, Gore will hire more staff and get more funding/resources for his CCW unit to speed up the process even more.

Upward and onward!
Another month and another record total: an even 2,200!

While this is a short month (Feb) and 83 seems like a weak increase (relative to previous months), IIRC I read somewhere that they're in the process of streamlining the app process and as anyone knows, when making a switch, even a switch to something better, things often slow down until after the transition is complete. I'll withhold judgment until June.

Curious as to what number we will start seeing a slow down. I mean as conservative as San Diego is compared to a lot of California (LA and San Fran) how many people do you think are actually interested in a CCW? When will the SO catch up to applicants where it’s only a 6....4........1 month wait from when one applies till they have a permit in hand?

That's a good point, unfortunately I have to pull my application. Upon reading the application completely, I discovered that because of something that happened to me 11 years ago as a kid... To answer the question truthfully would do myself. Good luck to you guys

I think the time it's going to take to see a slowdown will be measured in years given that we're a town of roughly 3.5 Million people and they haven't issued permits in several decades. That's a lot of catching up that needs to be done.

But there's a lot that can be done by way of improving the actual application process. Why on earth three interviews are needed is beyond me. Most of the process could be handled electronically which would really speed things up I think.

As much of the rest of the country, where CCW is far more common and we see the news stories of self defense cases, it's only a matter of time now until some violent thug picks the wrong victim here. And that will be headlines new to this area, and people will see that a permit is an option against violent criminals instead of just being a good victim. And that will also serve a a message to thugs, think twice.

Let's say there are 3.3M people in SD Co. Let's say 1/3rd of them are disqualified due to felony convictions, drugs, etc., or underage. That's 2.2M On average, ~5% of residents get CCWs in Shall Issue states. 10% of 2.2M is 220,000 so 5% is 110,000....

Even if only 3% get CCWs in SD Co, that's 66,000

Bottom line: the demand isn't likely to slacken anytime soon.

I've been following this thread for a while, but now I have a few months left for my appointment so I should start paying attention to what I'll write for Good Cause. I have a pretty good reason related to my job, but I'm not sure if the SDSO would contact my employer or who the contact person should even be. Not yet sure if it's something I want to bring up to my employer, since it seems awkward. Any tips?

Unless you're getting a ccw for a specific job related task, I don't think they will call your employer. For instance, i used a reason related to my employment but not due to any job activities and they didn't ask for any info about my employer.

I used a "good cause" that used my job as an excuse. They asked me if my employer had asked me to get a CCW or if I was doing it on my own. I told them it was me. They asked me for a name and number of someone in HR who could presumably verify my employment. I dug up something and gave it to them. As we were nearing the end of the process, they told me that they had left messages but never heard back (big surprise!) and asked me for a photocopy of my badge and a recent pay stub. They seemed like they wanted to check the boxes and issue me a CCW.

I think they do want to issue, I’m in about the 7th week of the process with the first and second interview done. At about the 5th week someone phoned me for more information, this was regarding proof I live at the address given, most utilities are in my wife’s name so I sent them a mortgage statement. Then just this past week another call wanting more proof. Fortunately the water bill is in my name so I sent that . I was told that should complete that part of the process . Now just waiting for approval. I must say everyone I’ve talked to are more than helpful and very courteous during the whole thing. I don’t believe at this point that the Sherrif is back peddling on issuing ccw’s.

Yeah it's not necessarily for a task, but more general (working alone, late at night, etc). Thanks for sharing.

That doesn't sound so bad if it's just a verification of employment. I like the optimism from these responses though, can't believe our county is light green on that map now

Pass it along to your family, friends, shooting buddies, coworkers, church friends, classmates, etc, and be sure to include women -- the more law-abiding CCWers out there, the safer we all are and the less safe are the BGs.

I just got approval yesterday, I'll be shooting tomorrow. If 7 yards is the max for qualifying then I might make it lol.
