anyone know the status of the refurb at the sdpd civilian range? i drove by last week and saw no evidence of any reconstruction which may indicate that it is closed for good.

Although work was to start in early February, the range is closed due to construction of a new target area bullet trap system. The Club did meet and discuss reopening until actual construction started, but I guess it was decided to not reopen?
First phase (money budgeted) is to build a block wall and slab out at the target line. Second phase is to install the new bullet trap mechanism (money budgeted). Third phase is to re-slope the shooting area to keep water away from the target area (money budgeted). Fourth phase is to knock down the old wooden overhead and build a new, more modern cantilevered overhead to help protect against errant bullets and the surrounding neighborhood (Money?) After seeing how long it took them to redo the parking lot/utilities and new rest rooms, I'm thinking that it'll be about 2 years before it's ready for shooters again, but that's my guess. It's also about the budget, which isn't great. I would anticipate a long wait and I used it every couple of weeks. Dammit! |

i really like that range and it would be great if civilians could have access to the other ranges (those in addition to the standard bullseye set up). If i recall they had an old pivoting target set up in an adjoining bay. not sure when the last time it was used. the place wasn't terribly busy.
it's a shame....if they streamlined the booking process i bet more people would rent out the small practice bays for classes....it was so arduous. like they had little motivation to facilitate this. |

It IS a great place to shoot, outdoors, decent target area, no line stoppage for target changing.
They do rent the other lanes to the east out to classes, they are almost always busy, especially on the weekends. The west range area has been closed for about a year. Orders from a higher up to stop it's use. Reasons-unknown. As of today, I have not had any updates on the renovation (adding bullet traps on the 25 yard range, the one that pivots). I do know that it's going very slowly, which again, the rest room and parking area took close to two years, so this will be even longer in my view. I miss that range as I went there at least twice a month to shoot. Been going there since the mid-70's. mike |

They have begun demolition on the left most of the 4 ranges. This impacts the public range (2nd left most) so they closed that down as of Dec 2019. They have told all other shooting groups (trainers, other PDs) that the remaining ranges are only for SDPD training and according to one of the trainers they are very busy. Once they complete the left most 2 ranges they will switch to the right most 2 for the remodel - and SDPD will move their training to the 2 newly remodeled ranges including the "public" range. In December they told us (I ran a shoot for USPSA types on the rapid fire range one night a week) it would be 18 months to 2 years before they re opened to us and the public - but that they want us back when it happens.

Wow Dave, yer first post and it's good one!
Thanks for the update. I have not been anywhere near there for about a month and my contact last was about three weeks ago, at which time nothing was happening. Welcome to CalGuns! mike |

So I have to ask, do they only allow Revolvers at the Revolver Club?
I mean it does keep the riff raff out. ![]()

It's been a few years so please forgive me if things have changed. That said, the range did allow both semiautomatic as well as revolver on the bullseye/pistol range (no rifle or shotgun).
If i recall correctly, they did have some caliber restrictions on that range bay. Our group shot 9mm, .45acp, 38 special and .22LR at a fixed distance of 25 yards. |

Liked: Do they only allow revolvers there to keep out the riff raff.
That's FUNNY right there! Long ago, before they added the overhead wooden baffles and the timbered backstop, there was a 900FPS restriction with the exception of .22. Yes, they used to host some very large matches there, it was a great time for shooters. It is by far the most pleasant place to shoot on a Saturday morning. A line iwth 40 positions taken up by no more than a dozen or so shooters. Rarely a line stoppage and the targets are in a below grade 'pit' that has a staired/tunneled access. Outdoors, much quieter than any indoor and pretty much fresh air not some unfiltered goop. Been going there since the mid 70's and it's my home base. I remember Ben, he was a nice old guy. Replaced by Dan, at least most weekends, another very nice old guy. Such a bummer that it will closed for such an extended time, but there's not a lot can be done....progress I guess. |

slowpull, thank you for posting the status update/SD Reader article. I hope the club prevails.
...It was always nice to speak and shoot alongside some of the retired police officers and other members who practiced and enjoyed the sport there. |

Damn! That is not good, a legal battle costs nothing but money, something the Revolver Club does not have a lot of. It is unbelievable what the City is doing. As for the folks that are complaining, they sure as hell haven't shut down the airport due to numerous complaints by nearby Point Loma residents. They knew there was an active range there before they developed and bought that property. BS!
Total bunch of crap. Again, I have been going to that range, my home base, since the mid-1970's. A great place to shoot handguns and shoot the sh*t with fellow enthusiasts. Carlson, the SDPD historian named in the article, just took over starting to preen the range to make it better. This certainly put a stop to that. This news is terrible! |

They are but since its also a public range, there's that too. Police are following City manager orders. No matter what its a bunch of hooey. The folks that bought the properties above the range absolutely knew that there was a Police Range located just down the hill about 200 yards away. The range has decent hours, nothing before 09:00 nor past 20:00, usually close at 15:00 to the public, its the private security/safety classes that go to 20:00. That is not an hour too late to keep anyone up, or not sleeping. The entire range had to install overhead baffles to prevent errant rounds heading for the living property areas when they were first sold about 10 years or more ago. They worked at a resolve, guess they couldn't agree. Society listens to the squeaky wheel no matter wrong or right. |

Latest word is that the SDPD Range will likely close permanently unless the public makes a stink.
That ain't likely since very few actually shot at that range, beautiful though it was. A travesty due to our City Manager I'm guessing. |

I got a tiny bit of a tough time going to shoot there. Said to myself “if they’re vetting me, great, because I hate when idiots are at the range”. That could have easily scared away most public interest. Once I was able to just shoot without answering questions I never told anyone about the place because I liked it being empty.
If anyone from the range is reading this all you need to do is align yourself with some kind of minority shooting sports organization and let them champion the reopening for you. Then keeping it closed is racist. |

That’s a shame, used to be a great place to shoot. I completed PC832 firearms training there and shot several matches at the SDPRC.

Is closed to the public. Need a gate code to get in now. Us retirees can only qualify on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1000 to 1400 I believe.

Thanks for the news SDDAVE56, even though it's not good news for those of use that have used that range for MANY years (Me since 1974).
I was hoping that BigDave94's (post #8) thread above was correct and that the public would be back in about 2 years. From your post, it doesn't seem so. |

I used that gange years ago but moved farther away since. Was hoping to go back. Sounds like from the rules of the deed the city is breaking the rules of the deed so it reverts back to the club.. who's a member that can sign me up..
let's all go have a meeting and if the don't let us in we just park in front of the gate and meet there. I'm up for a big fu to the city of sd. We can't just let these sacks of crap keep stealing our rights and breaking the law. |
