I'm looking for a place that has a steel target range in San Diego. I have been to Route 66 Shooting Sports park in San Bernardino and its awesome, but very far away to go shooting there with any regularity. I enjoyed it because you had anywhere between 10-15 steel targets of different sizes and distances so that you could practice transitioning to different targets at different distances as well as the auditory feedback of knowing that you hit that target. Appreciate any help if anybody knows of anywhere close?
Thanks, Brad |

Lemon Grove Rod and Gun has multiple steel ranges. It is a private club so you have to join but its cheap. Actual range is in Alpine.

Rainbow Range has steel targets on the pistol range. Must be a member to shoot there.

Come out to Escondido Fish & Game on the first Saturday of the month. $15 for a 5 stage very beginner friendly pistol competition on steel. All stages are steel targets, 18 rounds revolver neutral(fire 6, reload, fire 6, reload, fire 6), scoring is Virginia count(5 second penalty for miss, no makeup shots).
Match starts at 8AM and is over by 11AM typically, new shooters are always welcome. Need to bring a holster, any pistol, 3 magazines, and at least 90 rounds of ammunition. |

That sounds really fun. I will definitely take you up on that. I’m in San Marcos so not too far away.

Rainbow Range & Gun Club is about 20 min's north of San Marcos and right off the 15 freeway offramp.
It's a small range but great for outdoor shooting and they have steel set up at 3 of the ranges. I have been there weekday mornings and Sunday afternoons and have been the only person at the entire range. It's a very peaceful setting and always good people at the range. Let me know if you have any specific question. Matt Here's a few pics I just took of some of the ranges Pistol Range: 15, 25, 35 and 50 yard targets ![]() Trap and Skeet Range: need to be a member of the Trap Club to use the house - you can set up your own targets at the very back if not in use ![]() Instructors and 30 yard Archery Ranges ![]() Falling Plate Range: it's close so lead only ![]() 22lr Range: dueling trees, hangers, knock downers and rebounders ![]() Range Map ![]() |

Escondido does only at sanctioned events. For showing up to casually shoot, no. But you need to be a member or go with a member and sometimes the wait list is can be years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A few years ago I looked into private outdoor ranges in north county and was recommended EF&GA and RR&GC. Escondido had a 2.5 year waiting list and you could only be sponsored by an existing member, would need go through an interview and vetting process, were required to volunteer a number of hours at the range per year and the fee was over twice as much as Rainbow. (which does cut out the riff-raff so I completely understand) I know 4 people who could have sponsored me but it would have still been 2.5 years before I could even be considered to become a member. I called Rainbow and they said "stop by anytime, we're here from 9am to 6pm or dusk 365 days a year". I did and spent about 10-15 min's talking with the RO and checking out the ranges and have been a member ever since. They are both fine ranges, check them both out and decide for yourself. Matt |

Escondido took in an additional 1000 members. If there was a time to apply- it was 3 months ago, or tomorrow. You need to volunteer to help out with range maintenance for 5 hours a year, for your first 5 years.
If you have no interest in joining, I would still recommend any of the shooting events that are open to the public. Pictures of the AR/Pistol 2 gun match; ![]() ![]() Last edited by meanrock; 11-19-2021 at 11:16 AM.. |

Lemon Grove Gun Club in Alpine. You can attend a meeting (I believe) and get a sponsor there.
Visit their website....https://lgrgc.com/ They are having an open to the public Sporting Clays Shoot tomorrow, Sunday, 11/28/21 if you can make it to take a look around and meet a few peeps. |

I definitely want to check out a match at Escondido sometime. It looks like a really cool range.
The NRA membership is also a requirement at West End up in Lytle Creek. I was on the waitlist for 2.5 years before I got membership there. |

People keep buying houses next door to Rainbow Range and bringing law suits as if they didn't know people where shooting guns next door for 75 yrs. Everyone that shoots should be part of a 2nd A org to protect them. I don't mean one a those gun groups like Maxine Watters supports eg Cripps and Bloods.
