Default Gun Journalist Video: "A Las Vegas Hotel Searches My Bags And Took My Guns"

TLDR: James Reeves is a gun journalist and does videos for The Firearms Blog. He and a colleague visited the Venetian in Vegas for Shot Show 2022. They used bell service to have his luggage delivered to his room, but the hotel searched James' and his colleague's belongings and seized two guns (which we're in a lockbox).

I thought the video was entertaining and frustrating ... Especially because all of this was going on during Shot Show when a majority of the attendees are obviously already going to be carrying anyway.

I work in hospitality at a resort where our firearms policy is essentially, "Don't leave your gun accessible to hotel staff and you'll be fine" so maybe that's why this video was extra entertaining to me.

If the guns were in a lock box how did they know what was in the lockbox?

I don't watch YouGotTubed because they are more anti-gun than I thought possible.

Seems if a hotel took from me a lockbox and the contents weren't visible, it would never make YT but it would make for some interesting conversations about good faith compensation to avoid legal action.

A lockbox would seem to preclude anyone but the owner knowing what was inside.

X-Ray machine.

The Venetian obtained it circa 2018 and use it to X-Ray locked containers that are given to hotel services for delivery to rooms or for temp storage.

Yup, Venetian has been doing this since 9/11.

If you don't want them doing it, carry your own friggin bags.

Ya I definitely wouldn’t be using bell service for my firearms.

So, a steel lock box then.

And I knew there was a reason I don't give my luggage to anyone at the hotel Then again, their employees likely search your stuff in your room anyway.

I would never had off my bags to anyone if I had guns in them. You can actually just grab a bell cart on your own if your bags are too heavy.

Motivated by the 2017 Mandalay Bay incident, probably.

TLDR: lazy man gives his bag containing a firearm to hotel staff because he is lazy and can't be bothered to carry it to his room.

AFIK, most hotels on the strip are doing that since the shooting. If you let the bellhop take your bag, it will get x-rayed.

Wynn hotel started checking all bags in 2017. https://www.reviewjournal.com/busine...tal-detectors/

Isn't taking someone else's property, theft?

But yeah, never surrender your guns to a minimum wage imbecile.

Booking a room with them is part of the TOS agreement that you are giving your permission to them to search and secure your property.

Starting pay for a Venetian Vegas Bellman is $13/hour and the current minimum wage in Nevada is $10.50/hour.

I've traveled with multiple Army duffels and never asked anybody in a hotel or airport for help. Man, I had no idea James was such a puss

I'm sorry but the guy is an idiot.

I don't care if your gun is in a lockbox, you do not just hand your suitcase...WITH A GUN IN IT...over to the bellhop because you just gotta have a beer and start gambling so bad that you can't take 10 minutes to run your bag up to your room and make sure it's secure.

what the heck?

I always though Bell Boys were just monkeys to carry luggage for old frail rich people or rich women from taxi to room AND IIRC there was some policy to always keep bags "in view" of guest and if needed the elevator would be making a special trip of just that guest, bellhop, cart and bags.

I never liked stuff like Bell Boys just because I'm not comfortable with tipping and never know how much and it just feels awkward, plus a total rip off.

I heard back in the old days it was a point of honor for the front desk of any decent hotel that if they were full they'd be on the hot phone to all their competition they'd find you something, plus maybe free cab ride (kickbacks worked out among themselves).

That doesn't happen anymore in Vegas. Once you pull up, if you have them take your bag, it will disappear. Once you get to your room, you have to call them and wait, and wait, and wait before your bags show up.

Sounds stupid for several reasons, but IIRC you are right and remember guy saying his special suit he was to wear at fancy dinner etc was MIA for hours.

If its for Security its clearly dumb because you could still roll in with 100lbs of guns, ammo and IEDs, or drugs or sex slaves or whatever in large suitcase no problem.

Worst part is how are you supposed to flex with your massive entourage of fancy matching luggage that takes 4 bell-hops to wrangle as you swagger through the lobby leading the parade, if they shoot your bags off to freight elevator???

I don't have an issue with them taking and storing the weapons if you hand the bags to them, I do have an issue with the lengthy procedure to get them back and the security guard asking for a business card after producing two picture ID's is bull.

If you are stupid enough to give them a bag with a gun inside they are not required to make retrieving it an easy process.

I carry my own bags, at least any of them with my guns in them. I don't want some minimum wadge poorly trained bonehead to have access to my weapons.

I just checking, say i have my OWN baggage, and that's the end of it. I don't even bring the gun case inside the hotel, Its left in my truck.

For many, the issue may be if you like to have a few drinks, I don't drink so it's locked in my truck or on my person.

You'd think ALL decent hotels in 'Vegas would have a same standard way of checking and securing "VIP" bags (for a small fee or comp or whatever) that would include storing bags in their own sub-locker with scan of guest's ID (so even if guest loses wallet) in very secure storage with 24/7 guard and retrieval or delivery to room. Basically Coat Check on 'roids.

Ain't 'Vegas supposed to be World Headquarters for "bling", plus lots of conventions with people toting valuables etc.

I like this guy, and I can appreciate why he’s upset. Conversely, he willfully gave up custody and control of his firearms to a stranger.

We only stay at the Trump hotel when visiting Las Vegas . Besides everything being perfect , it is closer to the Clark county shooting range than the strip hotels.
I seriously doubt anyone would be harassed or inconvenienced over commonly possessed firearms at the Trump properties .
FWIW the valets we talked with were all shooters too.
