Default Shooting events questions, near bay area?

I posted this in the San Jose section and guess that was the wrong spot, re-posting here:

It seems like Appleseed is not coming back to the bay area anytime soon (Sacramento is a bit of a drive unfortunately), so I'm starting to look at some kind of handgun event locally....shooting paper at the range is getting stale. I've got my basic skills down, but haven't tried competing against the clock or others.

Should I get some more training under my belt first or just go for it and give a newbie-friendly event a try? I've scored Rifleman at Appleseed and I can kind of grok some handgun competitions I've seen in youtube vids..... I can shoot 9mm, otherwise a .38/.357 wheel gun, maybe .22 if I get a kit for the 9mm (Sig P226).

I looked at the CGSSA link above but their events page seems like it's down. Any advice?

Richmond Rod n Gun has action shooting matches monthly. If new to action shooing, you need to take safety class prior to registering. You can get all info on their website

I believe Richmond are the only action pistol events in the 'Bay Area.'

Ukiah does stuff, so does Sac Valley, but I am unaware of anything in the South Bay, although I am happy to be corrected.

It's quite sad there aren't more competitions here

Oh well.

Pistol events in the Bay Area? I mean, there's Oakland. Not sure how newb friendly it would be though.

If you are looking for pistol events in the bay area, you have options. Some are actual competitive matches, others are just organized shooting events for practice/enjoyment. All offer more than just shooting at paper on a static line. Here are a few to choose from:

Defensive Shooting Club (DSC) held at Metcalf Range
Almaden Action Pistol Club (USPSA) held at Metcalf Range
Action Pistol Club held at The San Jose Municipal 10th St Range
Saturday Night Steel Shoot held at San Leandro Davis St Range
Richmond Hotshots (USPSA, IDPA, Multigun) held at the Richmond Action Range
Diablo Action Pistol (Steel Challenge) held at United Sportsmen Concord Range

Do your research as most if not all will require some kind of class/orientation for new participants. Get out there and enjoy!
