Without ample stored food stuffs and water you will perish quickly.

You could kill every cat, dog, pig, horse and other critter in the LA basin and wouldn't feed 20 % of the people for a couple of days. If its not in your house you don't have it. Period.

Things will get ugly real fast. Things go on tilt when the power and EBT doesn't work. Multiply that by 10 million and its a real disaster.

Hungry and thirsty people will do anything to get food and water.

According to a government study they expect a 90% causality rate at 3-4 weeks without government services being provided. No power, water, police, fire or hospitals. If it really that bad food is the least of your problems.

Once services go out you have less than 72 hours before it will get bad.

As for everyone thinking they will hunt off the land. Good luck with that. Property owners will not just allow you to.

I'm up near Oakland and the local PD says that the first few days will have the druggies eating/killing their own, then roving gangs start hunting food/victims.

So you found some ducks in the city park and managed to catch one or 2 and take to eat.
Now what???

https://www.theselfsufficienthomeacr...er-a-duck.html

https://www.theselfsufficienthomeacr...chicken-5.html

Notice there are not any important differences (if any) in processing birds. Not just chickens and ducks.
Caveat. Don't eat any birds that eat dead things. Garbage in, garbage out and garbage meat.
Crows, vultures and inland seagulls etc.
**Ever see what seagulls eat at the dump/landfill???

Larder is empty and starving.
Under those circumstances, anything & everything is up for consideration.
Well, maybe not long pork.

I don't see how eating field mice/rats is any different than eating squirrel. Just make sure it's thoroughly cooked and doesn't show signs of disease, which is no different than hunting and eating squirrel.

I doubt that. People's tastes broaden as their stomachs contract.

in any extended grid down, like say six months or longer. at least 1/3 of those in the city's and suburbs will be dead.
i one year+, 80-90% dead.
and that's even eating everything they can catch.
the first wave of death will be lack of drinking water.
second wave due to a pandemic.

yes lots killed by druggies and gangbangers, but in much smaller numbers then lack of clean water, food, and the little bugs come out to play and reek havoc on everybody.

if everybody is starving, and your fat, and not thirsty. someones going to get hurt.

Something handy to know is what kind of plant life you can eat. I'd still be a little picky about where to harvest them but a couple of plants that can be found all over here are Sow Thistle and Dandelion, both of which are often considered weeds.
Sow Thistle, you can eat the leaves of, while all parts of the Dandelion can be used. You can roast the roots to make a tea or "coffee" -If I'm not mistaken, this is something that was commonly done in the early days of the US, even in the military.

You should be able to find something about their uses on Youtube easy enough.

Other things to consider are maybe earthworms from compost on top of setting up a garden. This requires some longer range set up though. Their castings are great for the garden. It's pretty much a polite way of saying earthworm poop. Anyway, you can often get used coffee grounds for free at shops just by asking. Any of you folks interested in gardening and survival-prepping might be interested in looking up permaculture gardens / food forests.

Oh right. The rodents. I think it would depend on where those rodents came from. Feels like bad news eating an inner city rodent. Something to consider is the danger of hantavirus and other illnesses. Guinea pigs were supposedly an important source of protein back in Peru and people would feed them scraps through the floorboards where they were kept. Something like that. I think they still eat them down there.

Cattails. Not gross at all.

Eat the cores raw or cooked.
Process the roots and eat like potatoes.
Keep and store the jelly for medical treatments.

And let's discuss personal sanitation for a moment...

When the SHTF, the ability to dispose of your waste will be important, especially if you are not constantly moving.

If you're "camping", you'll need a toilet seat, a 5-gallon bucket, and many plastic bags, sterile gloves, and baby wipes. Double- or triple-bag the bucket, use one bag for 2 to 3 days, then close it with no air inside, and put it with the others in a doubled yard waste bag. Max cleanliness will help avoid stink, disease, wild animals, and (hopefully) detection.

Plus we all have a neighbor or two who basically advertise that they have guns/ammo/supplies by hanging "cool" signs on their houses and cars. Makes it easy to know where to go for provisions. Appreciate the info!

Don't forget Nopale cactus. (aka *****ly Pear) Edit> Damned censor. p-r-i-c-k-l-y pear.

It serves a dual purpose. Edible, and also a barrier against 4 and 2-legged varmints.
