Default Best .357 lever gun for the money?

New to lever guns, not sure what to get, or how much to spend?

I have a couple .38/357s so I would just like a fun companion rifle for range fun, and maybe camping.

I dig the traditional look, but am not married to it. I know they do some pretty trick stuff to these things now.

I am looking for the good value, but not poor type rifle.

Recommendations appreciated.

Thank you

The best for the money is going to be a Japanese made Winchester model 92..IMO, of course.

I don't like to recomend the Rossi R92 but if you don't mind doing some light gunsmithing and taking a little bit of a chance, they can be good guns. I've managed to get 3 out of 5 to be good shooters.

Look for canted barrels, broken or stipped barrel band screws, broken or stripped mag plug screws and cycling problems. Their customer service is terrible so don't count on that.

Rossi, Henry, Winchester = Honda, Toyota, Lexus

I'd go with a Henry IMHO, ranges from $850-$1050 depending on receiver metal

I was considering a Citadel Levtac 92 (Hyundai) before the prices went through the roof

This makes sense to me. And, we are a Toyota family!

For OP's stated needs, I'd look at the Henry's. I have two, .357 and .45 Colt.
Absolutely zero problems with either. Smooth actions, built well, accurate etc.
I no longer hunt, so, these are desert and camping rifles. It's really a matter of finding any lever gun around. Good luck.

Take your time deciding what you want. I wanted a lever 357 and really like the Henry’s that has both tube and sidegate loading. Got a Model X as I figured the smaller size and lighter weight is what works best for what I’m looking for. Also figured the synthetic stock is great as I won’t worry about scratching it.

A year later, I still love the size and weight but swapped out the stock for a nice wood one from Henry. Love the way it feels and looks now.

Highly recommend you go touch and feel the ones you are looking at, as the weigh listings for lever rifles have been very inaccurate. Also loop and stock feel is different. Personal preference is a big part of getting one, as it is not a utility tool like some pistols.

Last point is Henry has excellent CS, I have seen quite a few complaints here about Rossi with different manufacturers/distributors leaving customers out to dry.

I think I'd go Ruglin (Ruger marlin), Henry, then Rossi and then Miroku winchester - not because they're bad, (on the contrary, i think they're very nice) just because I don't think the Miroku's are reasonably priced. - just too much cash for 1800's tech.

For me, being a lover of takedown weapon's I'd pay for a Taylors or Miroku takedown, but again, even used i'm going to be paying for it.

I didn't mention Marlin because they fetch a premium, but are great levers

The best? Browning B92. Better than original Winchester and current Winchester, far better than all the rest.

Love my Henry Big Boy steel side gate. Under 7 lbs, beautifully figured walnut, smooth as silk action.

It's everything I ever wanted in a 357 lever rifle. Turners now stocks those in carbine 16" and 20".

Absolutely agree with this. However, the trick is locating one, especially at a reasonable price. Mighty slick lever gun tho.

They made such a nice model 92 but it's been 35 years since they made one.

The Big Boy X is actually the one I am looking at now. I definitely want one with both loading options.

I've only got one 357 lever, and it's a Henry All Weather. I bought it from another calgunner. It looked like new, but I found it to be really difficult to unchamber/rechamber a round. I sent it back to Henry (Free shipping and service) and it's been a really wonderful carbine for the last >1k rounds. I love this gun!

OP, if you can wait, the new Marlin by Ruger is just starting up their lever action rifle productions. Might be a year or two till they produce their .357 levers.

I'm no expert in lever actions- but this is what I did and why:

First I bought a Rossi 92. I never warmed up to that rifle. I didn't like the flimsy top mounted safety or the buck horn sights. I thought I could tinker with it but it turned out to be harder to work on than my abilities and lost interest. On top of that mine was very ammo picky with .357 mag. .38 special feed fine. Sold it.
Then the Henry X came out and I saw it had 3 dot sights. It took a while but I finally tracked one down and bought it. Very nice gun. Before Henry's could only be loaded from the tube but now they also have a loading gate as well. Yeah a wood stock would have been nice but the black plastic is durable and maintenance free. So far it loads/feeds any ammo I've tried in it- unlike the R92.
The new Marlins look interesting but so far I have not seen one in person.
My vote is with US made Henry.
Good luck.

Forget the "reasonable price" jazz. Find one and get it. The money is worthless anyways. Getting more so every damn day.

Yup...the best magnum pistol caliber lever action rifles out there are the Browning B92 levers in .44 mag and .357mag. They were made under contract with the Morucu company in Japan for Browning from 1978-1987. A close copy of the Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action rifle, the B-92 was introduced in 1978 as a limited edition B-92 Centennial in .44 Mag. caliber only. The standard B-92 was introduced in 1979 in .44 Magnum. The 357 Mag. was introduced in 1982. The B-92 was discontinued in 1987. They are better than the original Winchesters IMHO. As stated above.. try to find one...they are rare as hens teeth in .44 mag and the .357 version is a true unicorn in the gun world. If you find one...don't quibble over price.. BUY IT!

"Miroku"/Browning B-92 in .44 Magnum:

Best .357 *for the money* imho is the Rossi from about 7 years ago. I bought one, a 16" blued round-barrel carbine, went to Steve's Guns webpages, read between the lines, stoned the bolt, filed some of the rough edges from inside the receiver. The trigger was awesome out of the box. $535.00 or whatever. Best value-for-dollar for a .357. I am fortunate, too, to own a 1989-built Marlin 1894CS357 that's had some lovin'.

A used Marlin made in the 1990s

Add a Skinner Peep sight and you have a very fun gun

I didn't know there was a difference until after I posted, to be honest.

The ability to quickly load ammo is definitely appealing..

And, after considering the big boy x, I believe I am leaning towards the more classic walnut and blued versions.

Yeah man, it's a good advantage, especially for plinking at the range. Its easy on the fingers and easy to unload. Can't go wrong with a Henry...unless your me.

How could you not like one of these. They might be a half pound heavier then the other brands but oh my...plus the customer service is second to none.

You are looking at 38/357 and available?
Henry probably best balanced bang for your buck
Rossi is hit and miss
Uberti makes reproduction levers that IMO are quite nice. But also somewhat hard to find. And you kinda should “know” exactly what you are looking for. 1873? 1892? Take down? Etc. relatively expensive as well.
I don’t have any experience with citadel personally.
The Miroku/winchesters are overpriced IMO. Also suffer from same issue as the Uberti’s. You gotta know what you want. Also hard to find. Your mileage will vary

Someone mentioned Marlin. There are no currently manufactured marlins (ruger now owns them) in 38/357. So if you find one it’ll be expensive and legacy and then some issues with when Remington took over manufacture etc. While ruger will PROBABLY get around to making the 94 in 38/357 they are currently only making 1895 variants in 45-70 I think.

Ditto Browning. Pretty sure the only levers they still make (I think Miroku makes these too) are the BLR which only comes in “hunting” calibers.

I liked the pistol grip and bigger loop of the X and swapped the stock to Henry walnut. Don’t recall which big boy options are available now.
Here is a link to that project to show what it looks like, I added a rds I had removed from a pistol as rds work much better with my eyes.

Taking your time will help find the feel and options you want, there also seems to be more options from Henry and other manufacturers coming out. Seems like retro levers with some modern features are getting more popular.

Here is a link to that project to show what it looks like, I added a rds I had removed from a pistol as rds work much better with my eyes.

Those look really cool, personally I didn’t care for how front heavy the octagon barrels felt (though they look really nice). I mostly shoot mine offhand and figured the weight may become an issue, but all about personal preference as some people love the extra front weight.
