The weather should be perfect. Little or no wind, compared to the last few days.

I might not make it, though, with everything going on here at the house. Garage door repair (which I am doing myself), truck's 2-way radio antenna mounting plate/hardware/coaxial/fittings/etc hitting the porch (if someone isn't home, the box grows legs), and once the garage door springs are replaced and tuned, the lift opener tuned, etc... I gotta get all this stuff stacked outside (that was in the way of the repair) put back inside...

I might not have the time to load up the truck and head to Mo-Jay-Vee (sung to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies)...

And I've been looking forward to some pewpew therapy.

drop it all and save it for the weekend. Those are terrible excuses.

I'm getting a 8 week old puppy tomorrow morning. Now there's an excuse

Bob, she's a German shepherd mix from the animal shelter. We have the room and our little yorkie needs a buddy. Our local shelter is packed with dogs (mostly pit bulls) and you know what that means..

I tell ya, they have a beautiful Flat-coated Retriever. He's just too full of piss and vinegar for me right now. I'll check on him tomorrow. I saved a beautiful Golden Retriever from there 10 years ago. Just like all of our other goldens, she was a wonderful dog.

Nothing better than rehoming (taking in) a dog in need.

My lab was a year and a half old when we got him, from a lab rescue organization.
You'd have thought we were adopting a child: application form & fee, followed by home & yard inspections.
I think we got him mostly, because I knew someone that could vouch for me and she new someone at the rescue group.

Mark - I am ready to start packing the truck for tomorrow. We had a litter of Golden Retrievers show up on our porch somehow when we lived in Suisun City. We got them all homes and kept one. it turned out they had parvo and only a couple, including ours, survived. Chelsea was a great dog, one of the best pets you could ask for. Just about all our dogs, except for the German Shorthairs I used to breed and train for hunting, were rescues.
We are down to two smaller dogs now - a terrier mix and a Jack Russell terrorist. The Jack Russell was one of a litter my son found in a cardboard box in San Bernardino. He found them all homes except the one we kept.

Flat Coated Retrievers are fairly uncommon. I've only seen one in the field, and other than that just at the Cow Palace dog show when I went several years ago.

And, you are spot-on about the Goldens.... I've had three in my life, and all have been special dogs. Charlie is the current one and he is now 3 years old. I've had dogs all my life, but Charlie is the best dog I've ever owned (of course, I think that about every dog I've had. )

We'll see ya in the morning. Probably around 8:15-8:30...

Tom's going to be here at 7 and we tend to lolly gag more than we should.

BOSS, he's a handsome Golden. They're just a great family member and they sure don't have a problem protecting their family. Mine would take the bad guy all through the house showing him where the beer is but God help him if he tried to hurt one of us. All 3 were very protective in this was.

So far so good with the puppy. She's just sleeping. I'd sleep too if I spent the last 9 weeks with 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Regarding the Flat-Coated Retriever. He was adopted. I'll kick myself for not adopting him later.

Hey Tom, double check everything tomorrow with me. It wouldn't be the first time that I've been out shooting in the Mojave without mags

I'm just bringing a couple shootin irons. I have a feeling I'll be up all night with this little gal. Of course she's been sleeping since I brought her home. You might have to drive

See ya in the morning brother

The Rossi arrived at my FFL today so I went over and DROSed it since I had another gun there to DROS as well as well as 2 others that were clear to pickup.
The action is nice and slick for only having 8 rounds fired.
It has a ghost ring sight that screws into the top of the bolt and a nice fiber optic front sight.
This one is a keeper.

Good times in the Mojave today. 75 degrees and clear skys. A little breeze picked up around noon just to cool things down a bit.

The highlight of the trip for me was shooting Penn's Ruger #1 and Calif Hunter's M1 Carbine. I want one of each please..

Oh man, another grand day in the Mojave. Didn't take any pictures for some damn reason, but, that's the way it goes sometimes. Lots of stuff to shoot other than my Pietta .45 Colt, which I left at Marks place!!
.45 Colt lever guns, CH's handguns[ some mighty fine ones there!], CH's M1 carbine, my Ruger No.1b in 30-06; we had it covered. Just another fine day in the desert. It was fun and good to have CH out there. Damn fine fella.

Default Yeah, yeah... you guys suck.

Glad you guys had a good time. Also glad to hear it wasn't too br33zy.

Also glad I stayed home. Lots o' stuff strewn about around here and as noted earlier, I didn't want that and the box that hit my porch a 3PM to grow legs and wander off. We seem to be living in a "shipping lane" among the High Seas of Porch Pirate-ry.

Yes, it was a great time today and I'm glad I was able to make it. Mark's .45 Colt lever action is a beauty! So is Tom's Ruger #1 and his Marlin 39A. We all enjoyed shooting the M1 Carbine, though it was not locking open after the last round in the magazine. I didn't have any of my GI mags, so I am not sure if is a problem with the gun or with the Promags. But it was fun to shoot steel with it. I think we spent as much time talking about dogs as we did shooting, though.
Chris - with the fluid that is sitting behind my right retina, I am not much of a shot any more with open sights and I brought nothing with a scope today. Mark was shooting pretty well - hitting the steel at 100 yards with his.45 carbine - or was it a short trifle? He was also doing quite well with the handguns. I may have to start shooting with my left eye - easier with a handgun than a rifle.

Oh snap! I need to get out my Blackhawk, thanks for the tip...

I'm curious to find out about the small problem we had with the M1. It started out looking like a mag issue but then it didn't...

Good times for sure....

It was the Rossi .357 short rifle, Rick

Update: I thought my Blackhawk had a good trigger before. Oh my! I'm going to take it to the local indoor range next week and see how she shoots. Thanks for the tip, Rick..it took me 2 minutes..

Hey Rick, thanks for the snacks...

I kept hearing Mozzarella but it looked, tasted and had the texture like Monterey Jack.

Rick! You'll always be an ace.

In other news...

Should I have an esteemed gunsmith (the Official Gunsmith of the MLC, if I were able to secure an appointment) shorten the barrel on my Interarms Mark X/Zastava/Whitworth Safari Express?

It is chambered in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum and is barreled with 24". I have been talking to SplitHo0f about this; he had his CZ550 run through ThreeRiversGunsmithing and they shortened that tube to 21"...

Mine is a big Mauser which may never see Africa, but should see some North American dangerous game in the time I have left walking this Earth. I am unconcerned with the slight loss of velocity; in fact, those who in the past used the .375 H&H for many years in Africa would handload to slightly slower velocities to, - get this - acheive *greater* penetration...

Switching back to the desert yesterday, Rick's Vaquero was a splendid shooter and that trigger! SMOOTH! And as mentioned earlier, the weather simply smiled on us once again. Fun shooting as I believe we all[3 of us] shot pretty darn good. Rick, thanks for the smoked cheese, tasty stuff right there.
To the next time!

Yes, it was mozzarella. Several of my friends claim it is their favorite, along with pepper jack.

My Ruger is the Lipsey's Flattop in .45 Colt.

You both also seemed to enjoy the 1917 Colt.
Mark's Miroku short rifle is a thing of beauty. I was surprised by how heavy Tom's brass Henry in .38/.357 is.

What, no pictures?

I'm not sure you guys went out any further than the nearest Black Bear Diner for a pancake breakfast.

Just kidding. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Keep it up.

CH,
I recently did two full 22" grill racks of smoked cheese on our ancient Weber, one rack for us and the other for some neighbors. Started out at 3:30am and finished around 8:00am. The outside temperature was between 34 and 42 degrees-perfect for the smoke. Ours and our neighbors' preferences are exactly the same as your friends, mozz and pj are the top favorites around here and closely followed by gruyere. The two-week refrigerator rest time is almost up but we still have a couple of vac packed blocks left from a smoke last October.
Have you ever or know anyone who has smoked blue cheese? It seems hard enough to take the smoke without melting, Mozz seems to be softer and it turns out well. Might have to try it before the weather turns too warm.

No pictures, no air show and no dead body but a great day shooting guns and shooting the bull.

I picked up a 6# block of Mozzarella at Costco last night. I'll smoke some this weekend if I have time.

^ ^ ^ Good 10-day forecast fer th' smokin'. Gonna be on the cooler side.

In other news...

Doing a 2-way mobile GMRS radio install in my truck. After all is said and done, and after trying an external, metal antenna mount (that was sandwiched between the center-mount third brake light and the rear edge of the cab, which, no matter what adjustments I make to the screw-pattern mounting torque the horizontal plane of the antenna mount surface remains 1.5* forward of horizontal, pitching the antenna forward, making everthing look bent), I'm sheetcanning that idea and drilling through the roof of the cab.

Waiting on the delivery of the specific hole saw I want to use and will drop the headliner next week after researching how to do it without damaging the headliner (removal of A, B and C-pillar interior trim, door weatherstrip, sill plates... jfc... really?) but if I want to do a clean, professional-looking install, then... and that, my friends, is my curse.

I have standards! Problem is my skills do not often measure up to those very standards...

I need a day of pewpew therapy.

I sure wish I could join you fellows and meet everyone face to face.... alas, the drive from Idaho is just a bit too far.

That would be neat, but, yeah, thats a drive. Next time we head out, well have the "'bossman shoot"! Hows that?

I picked up my Rossi 357 levergun today.
It appears to be a winner.
Even came with a box of 42 rounds as the original owner had only fired 8 of them.

Anyone recognize the style of this price tag?

Is that Turners or bass pro/cabelas?
The rossi box is priced with the same type of label so I am betting the first owner bought them both at the same place, probably when he was picking up.

Huh! It's a shame the prior owner didn't take to -not only one of the best firearms values in history- but one of the most fun to shoot!

R, where's a photo or two of the gun?

I just started reading this thread.

Is admission contingent on owning a lever?

I've got Savage 99s, Winchester in 30-30, and now a Ruger/Marlin Trapper in 45-70.

Sadly, no pistol caliber lever rifles...but I DO have a Rossi Ranch Hand in .44 mag, haha!!

Works for me. Going in for some minor surgery tomorrow - hopefully it won't be a memorial shoot!
