Default CALVET Dependent Tuition

Has anyone that is not 100% rated use the CALVET dependent tuition? What was the process for Plan B? My daughter is a senior this year in high school so I am looking for any information on how all that works.

When I did CalVet with my daughter a few years back we had to go to the state tax board to verify her income and then to the CalVet office.
She then went to the university’s admin where she did more paperwork.
As far as the plan B I don’t know.
Every year after that since she was verified through the CalVet office all she needed was her tax info and the CalVet pw to keep the ball rollin.

How does any student fall below $14,000 in income if they include the value of room and board provided to them? Did that rule change?

Food support doesn’t count.

Room/rent does. As well as vehicle and medical.

Just about to put my second kid through college with CALVET. You have to get your federal tax returns for the child that says they didn't file. Statement of nonfiling. That was the hardest part. Then the first time you apply you have to prove you are a resident (utility bills). Its kind of painful but after the first year the kid can basically do everything, highly worth it. I calculate saving about $200,000 on college through the program.

I mean the worst they call you is “no you don’t qualify”. I’m sure my wife and I won’t qualify by the time our sons are ready for college but we will try.

My son uses it.. I was rated 30% at the time of approval. He needed to show verification of non filing. In the past we used a form 4506-T submitting the request by mail or fax. This year the IRS has been difficult to reach and has not been very responsive. I called their appointment line, showed up, and had them write a letter. Reach out by PM if you need a hand.

First time starting the process (Plan B) for my daughter; she's graduating HS this May. Since she has already applied to many UC/CSUs, I tried to drop the package off at my local VSO in Stanislaus County. I was told that they will not accept any packages until after the Federal Tax Filing deadline (April 18th this year).

Sooooo, need to get another "Non-Filing Letter" from the IRS for 2022, even though she's not filing. IRS website states it won't issue those until around June 15th this year. I decided we'll try emailing the Franchise Tax Board to get an "Individual Status Letter" come April to hasten the process.

Here's what the VSO is requesting to certify the DVS-40: a copy of the dependent's birth certificate, a Tax Non-filing letter (either from the IRS, his/her taxes if filed to show under the income amount for qualification, or an Individual Status letter from the FTB), and the benefits award letter from the VA (you can pull from E-benefits).

We'll see how it goes come April.
