Question Zeroing a SBR 13" SCAR 17-How many yards out?

What would be the optimal range to zero a short barreled 13" SCAR 17. Using an Aimpoint M4s mounted on a LaRue NV hight mount.

What ranges will you be shooting? I zero at 50yds, which puts you on at 200yds.

Apologies for off topic, but . . . .how about a picture of your SBR SCAR 17?

Did you have the barrel cut or did you find a 13" off the rack from FN?

Sounds like a great carbine!

The distance you plan to shoot it is the correct distance to zero it.

25-50yds is usually a good zero distance for SBR's.

Figure out what distance you plan to shoot at most or what intended use is (serious use or plinking), take the load you will zero with, run it through a ballistic calculator and run the numbers until you are satisfied if you want to be super anal. Depending on the load, barrel length, and environmental factors, you may be good zeroing at 25 yards or 50; I generally use a 50 yards zero on everything CQB oriented. Or maybe you are using a boutique or SD load and it might work perfect for you if you zero that particular load and barrel at 28 yards, or 37 yards, etc.... depends

I zero scopes at 100 and dots/irons at 50.

A 13" 308 Scar will still be good out to 600+ yards but with that 2moa dot I'm guessing you are staying under 300 and most likely under 200.

50 yards sounds good, I sight in at 50/200 for all my 7.5" to 10" to 14.5" short barrels at 50.

Very nice!!

That does make me wish I lived in free America!

On another note . . . . you can take the bar code sticker off your SCAR OP.

Great looking rifles!

why in the hell would you put a full length .308 case in 13"

might as well shoot a x39 case

waste of energy

I would zero at 50 yards since it's a 13". For a 16" I would say 100 yards.

Go ask FN or US SOCOM. I do it because I legally can. I wasnt asking opinions weather you thought .308 would be optimal in a 13" barrel. I was asking a question regarding what yardage to zero an optic. That's why I tend not to post in these forums anymore.....Chiming in with opinions totally off topic...

Here is some fps info to compare

AK47 16" barrel 124gr 2250fps

SCAR 17s 13" barrel:

Real issued Mk 316 (175grSMK)
2339 fps
5 shot average as I have a limited supply

White box Mk 319 from Palmetto State (130 gr SOST)
2672 fps
This number somewhat puts the whole "Ak/300 Blackout Ballistics" into perspective. Also flash & muzzle blast with this load is IMHO not as bad as M193 from a 10" 556. I am also happy with this load's performance through steel. Even from this barrel length at 100 yds it will cut through AR400 boiler plate. Other .308 loads I've tried will not.

Hornady 155 gr TAP-FPD
2424 fps

Federal 168 gr GMM
2321 FPS

5.56mm from 10" SCAR 16

M855
2642 FPS

Black Hills Blue Box 75 gr Match
2243 fps

Federal 77 gr GMM
2197 fps

Real Issue 5.56mm Enhanced "Brown Tip" 70 gr Barnes
2467 fps

Mk 318 62 gr SOST
2539 fps

Didnt want to go there, but there you go. The SCAR 17 SBR will TRUMP the AK with a longer barrel all day.

Why not? Besides, there is at least one company that makes a conversion to x39 for the 17, so it's easy.

i know for 556 the trajectory at 36yds is the same at 300 so we always zer2p at 36 and verify at 300.
I know there is a similar of not the same thing for 308...

I have two SCAR 17s and I'm going to move out of state, so I looked into this a few years ago because I was thinking of making a CQC SCAR 17.

First, It depends on the specific ammo you use if you are looking for the near and far zero.

Second, standard 7.62x51 NATO ball (M80) will put a HELL of a flash out of the short barrel Mk17. So a special version of the MK319 MOD 0 was developed and used by SOCOM to reduce the flash signature and make suppressors last longer.

This is the proper ammo to use with the Mk17 CQC set up.

AB50, MK 319 MOD 0 (7.62MM Enhanced)
130 grain OTM (reverse drawn Jacket)
Bullet Temp stable flash reduced Propellant
Not yaw dependant Reduced recoil (10%)
Optimized for MK 17
(16” BBL) 2925 fps @ 15’
(13” CQC BBL)2750 fps @ 15'

Anyway, after doing some reading about the short barrel Mk17 I decided to just build a short barrel weapon from one of my SCAR 16s instead. It will be more useful for me.

Anyway, good luck

I suggest you put a brace or just try a pistol 556 first if oyu have not shot one already. They are annoyingly loud and a 556 barrel is not so heavy that it makes cutting it all that great. Just my opinion after putting a 10.5" barrel on my machine gun. Got rid of it after a few trips to the range. In your case it would save you the $200 and trashing your gun with engraving.

Now a 9mm or 22 shorty upper are fun especially suppressed. I have a 9" 9mm and a 4" .22lr but my 556 are plain jane 16".

Thanks for the info. That might be worth considering. I do already have four AK pistols, so I'm familiar with those. Is the 556 louder than a 10" AK?
