I love the 1911 platform, but also HKs and Sigs. To answer your question I would have to say it depends on the purpose. Self defense I'd lean towards 9mm; back woods 10mm or 44 mag; plinking a 22.

Any cartridge that starts with a 4 and ends with a 5

Favorite platform is the 1911

Sentimental favorite as one of these was my first handgun in 1972.

A lot of good choices out there but 45ACP and 38 are my favorites. So I use my 1911 gov't, commander, HK's, and S&W revolvers.

I fell in love with my Px4 about ten years ago. I have that in .40. But I like my 1911 as well. .45

I have 22, 9, 38 and 357. The 38/357 is a revolver. Cost effective is why I went in the 9mm direction, too. Used to have a 45, but sold it to get something else. It's interesting to learn & read all of the comments. My brother had (has?) a 44 magnum that he loved, and said it was a lot of fun to shoot; even his wife liked it.
I should have clarified earlier; I have some, but am thinking of adding to what I already have, so was looking for some nice ones that I don't already own. Should have included this earlier; sorry about that.

9mm and Glock of course. What I am enjoying is my Glock 17 Gen 3 with the Advantage Arms Conversion Unit so I can shoot .22 LR as well as the 9mm.

Preferred Caliber: 9mm. Not to say I can't shoot anything else, just that this is my preferred caliber.

Preferred handgun: 1911. There is just nothing out there that fits in my hand as nicely and that I use as well as a fullsize1911. HK USP is my preferred polymer of choice.

Gun defines caliber.

I like 1911 and 1911 may only be 45.

Favorite to shoot is 38 super
After that it’s 10mm for everything else and 9mm for practicality.

With most recent developments in bullet technology, I don't think you can beat 9mm. I have a few of them. My personal favorite is my Gen 2 Glock 17. I also have a Glock 22 in 40 Smith & Wesson. I remember the last ammo shortage, 40 Smith & Wesson with some of the only ammo left on the shelf. I don't think you can go wrong with 9mm. I don't buy into that whole 45 Cal monkey business. It's just expensive and really unneeded. Given new developments.

Just add as a medic I've seen hundreds of bullet wounds. 45 caliber doesn't seem to cause any more of a fatality rate than 9 mm as long as you're using the correct type of self-defense rounds.

Not going to read this thread because it's so generic in nature, seems almost like vague booking but there was some detail in your question/statement.

I'd be willing to bet someone told you to by a Glock because it's the best handgun, sorry, gun ever made.

Good luck in your search!

Favorite gun is 1911. For range use I like my Springfield Armory Loaded Target and Range Officer both in 9mm. For defense the 45 ACP is hard to beat. For competition the 40 S&W is the ticket.

If youíre still undecided what handgun or firearm to get you need to ask yourself what purpose if this firearm for?

9mm is my preferred mostly because my right thumb is messed up and 45 hammers it to much. My preferred model is a full-size 1911 but my CZ Tac Sport is right up there also.

In semi-auto it has to be the 1911 in 45 ACP. I have a few full size 1911s and if I had to pick one as a favorite it would probably be the Kimber Custom II. 230 gr. hardball is the only ammo I use in my 45 ACPs. I'm not sure why, maybe just tradition, but it's all I've ever used.
In revolvers I like .44 magnum but I don't shoot them as much as I did when I was reloading. Factory loads can get up around 1,500 fps and that can be punishing after a box of 50 rounds. I used to load 240 gr. SWC rounds at around 1,100 fps and that was more enjoyable and easier on the hand.
As far as my favorite magnum revolver I will say that my stainless Redhawk with the 7 1/2" barrel handled the hotter loads better but I preferred my S&W Model 29-2 with the 6 1/2" barrel and the milder reloads.

9 mm- Sig 2022
45- Ruger P97 or 1911
I have told myself no new calibers, so, 10 and 40 are out for the time being.

10mm Seems like overkill for SD/HD. And if that's not enough and still you feel the need to get to your rifle/shotgun, you must be living in a war zone. But to each his own...

That's what I'm talking about. Glad you ended up doing, what I started with... Never owned another caliber - I always focused on 9mil and 22 for handguns. 9 mil has all kinds of variety of ammo and endless choices.

This is one of my favorites. It's a 1964 first year issue that I bought back in the 90s from the original owner. My other .41 magnum is a Blackhawk that was made sometime in the 80s as far as I can tell by the serial number.

[QUOTE=.40Cal;23802464]10mm Seems like overkill for SD/HD.

I feel 10mm is the most Versatile Handgun caliber available. I can Run 40S@W or 10mm loaded at 40 S@W levels. 135 ,155, 180 , and 220 grain rds. From 900 fps to 1600 fps The variety allows me to use the same Gun or manufacture. Glock 29 with a 10 rd mag for Ccw or 15 Rd mag for little more capacity . I want a little more velocity I can Carry my Glock 20 or add my long slide. For a Backwoods gun.
Hard to find a pistol that will do all that . Over kill No such thing as overkill when you defending your home. 9mm will penetrate walls and such just as 10mm will.

10mm.

357 power in an auto pistol.

The most practical platform for this caliber is a Glock.
