We shot a handful of cinnamon and a bull sprig in the morning. When he had to leave for work a little after 9 I kept the only one I knew I had shot (hard to tell with 3 guns most ducks had help from all). Stuck it out til almost 4pm and finished with a bull sprig of my own. Not a bad way to finish my first year duck hunting. My dog did awesome too. Transitioning from club pheasants to wild ducks wasn’t too hard. Just have to work on marking in cover. And sticking with divers! And casting. And my calling. Ok we have a lot of work to do.
Also included is the dog’s reward for all his hard work and patience in the blind. He worked hard for those coots. Glad to see I’m not the only one who shoots them (and takes them home).

We shot 4 ducks Saturday and 3 ducks and a speck sunday. Both days it shut off by 7:45am and then as we started to pick up got buzzed by some teal. My blind partner went back out in the afternoon to take his two young sons and pulled in to find maybe 500 specks in the pond next to the parking lot. Too funny. We were one bird short of our high from 3 years ago.

Shot a limit for closing day. Two Widgeon, 3 Bufflehead and 2 GW Teal. Had a great season. I still get to go out one more time for a veteran only hunt so its not officially over yet.

It was a year of firsts for me. This is the first year I didn’t hunt ducks on closing weekend. Also, this is the first in 8 or so years of consecutive hunting that I shot more quail than ducks. Also the first year I didn’t lose a single wounded runner quail or fail to find a dead bird in thick brush.
My hunting buddy and I opted to take up a friend of his’ invitation to make the three-and-a-half hour drive up to Maricopa County for a private land quail hunt. We’d have probably shot twice as many birds if we hadn’t spent so much time BSing, but no complaints. We had a great time, and got to hunt some amazingly beautiful terrain. https://flic.kr/p/2kxFhbq 60F2BB35-24D1-46BC-B500-7D8425A3A76D.jpg
