Default Son moving back to Ca. M4 question

So I sent my son my Colt M4 a while ago and now he is moving back to Ca.

Is there a way for him to make this rifle featureless for Ca. and if so . How?

Thanks in advance you guys. I've been out of the semi auto game for a long time.

Fixed magazine is one way to be compliant. Featureless consists of no flash hider, no pistol grip and no collapsible or telescoping stock.

Make sure that Colt model is not on the ban list.

SO with a grip wing, a pinned stock and no flashider he is legal. Would that still allow a dethable magazine?

Sorry I put this in the Manual section.

https://www.riflegear.com/p-8397-rif...kit-alpha.aspx

You don't have to buy this particular kit (it's not in stock anyway) but this will give you a good idea of what you have to replace & what the replacements will need to look like.

Or go fixed mag & have to open the upper after every 10 rounds.

Sorry I put this in the Manual section.
If it's featureless, then yes, it can have a detachable magazine.

If it's not featureless, then it needs a non detachable magazine.

Keep all parts you remove from the rifle for the time you move out of California or the laws are invalidated.

What some people call an M4 or whatever might very well be something entirely different. With Colt models, you really gotta be sure.

There's a reason OP sent it out of state instead of slapping a fin grip on it.

OP said Colt M4. I doubt he would've specified it that way if it was a Sporter II or HBAR.

The exact roll mark matters.

OP, which model specifically does your son have? Colt LE6920? LE6940?

Simply stating Colt M4 conjures up select-fire capabilities

The rollmark on mine is M4 Carbine. Featureless and fully CA legal.

Also, no vertical foregrip is allowed for a featureless build. If your son is using the normal round plastic handguards then it is not an issue.

Probably best not assume everyone is super specific 😉

Like I said, OP sent it out of state for a reason, so we're missing two key pieces of info here - the exact rollmark and reason it left the state instead of getting a fin.

The model they sell at Turners Pasadena. Select fire? C'mon man.

Thank you all that answered the question. Appreciate it.

Forgot to ask. Do you still need a bullet button on a featureless rifle?

A complete unmolested Colt M4? Rather than mod it, I would just burry it in the backyard and build a new AR with your son.

Starting 01-01-2017, "bullet button" style magazine releases are no longer considered CA legal fixed magazine devices.

All firearms with a "bullet button" style magazine release are considered firearms that do not have a fixed magazine.

Unless the firearm is a registered assault weapon with a bullet button (BBRAW), there is no reason to have a "bullet button" style magazine release installed on the firearm.

In addition, having a "bullet button" style magazine release installed on a featureless semi-auto centerfire rifle may cause confusion with a CA LEO that may encounter it due to the change of it's status in 2017 and may cause them to confiscate it, until it's status is cleared up.

The stock can be locked into the desired position. No mater what stock it is there is probably a good DIY solution out there that is free or a $1 that won't screw anything up.

Thread protector or muzzle brake to replace the flash hidder.
And replace the grip with one that has a fin. The whole thing can be done for $20.

If he's wanting something more useable look into a fin grip with a thumb shelf or sparrow dynamics or resurgent arms grip. And an ambidextrous safety. I like the safety that sparrow dynamics makes because you can adjust the clock position and it is super easy to use with your trigger finger.
